Fillmore East is so fucking beautiful and sick

he comes out, congratulates the USC Trojans for winning their bowl game to which the audience gives some really weak applause, and then he just gets fucking revolutionary all night

"Castles Made of Sand", followed closely by "Manic Depression", "Burning of the Midnight Lamp", "Love or Confusion", "1983", "Wind Cries Mary"...
and that's not even any of the badass blues stuff he did
― Blah Sabbath (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 7 January 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link
in some ways i think i'd go with "Bold As Love"
― Thug Luftwaffle (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 7 January 2012 21:32 (twelve years ago) link
or fuck, maybe "Third Stone from the Sun"? I dunno.
xp What "badass blues stuff?" Recommend some to someone who's never really understood people's obsession with Hendrix.

the 1994 release titled Blues springs to mind and it is really lovely indeed

not that it's badass blues stuff (at least not totally) but it is currently my favorite (albeit imaginary) hendrix album
Little Wing, but for rarer stuff Driving South on the BBC sessions is pretty hot

"Burning of the Midnight Lamp", for sure. The Stockholm '67 live version on the Experience box set kills me.

in the badass Blues stuff category, from the Blues album that long live version of "hear my train a-comin'" is super sublime

this comment on tylerw's blog:
Interesting note about this cover: it was created by Mati Klarwein (Bitches Brew, Live Evil, Abraxas) for a proposed Jimi and Gil Evans collaboration.
makes me want to stare at that cover for six or seven hours and try imagine what their record would have sounded like (presumably not a whole lot like The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix)
― Brad C., Monday, 9 January 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link
ha, yeah - reallllly want to like that Gil Evan Plays Hendrix album, but I can't get through it.

YES! Love this version. The stripped-down live arrangement really suits the song's introspection better than the harpsichordy studio arrangement.

when you listen, you're going to say, fuck, I should have listened to it earlier. it stands next to all the other Hendrix albums imo, it's incredible.
I think it's linked upthread? yes:

I have a weird hangup about mixes without track demarcations. That's the sole reason I'm not jamming this thing out, right there.

Hm, gotta say I prefer the "First Rays" reconstruction I made my own self a coupla years ago, including questionable/ahistorical choices such as "Captain Coconut". But I guess everyone disssatisfied with the released version has their own ideas.
― Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 22 March 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago) link
I've gone and at least hand-labelled each of the 4 tracks with all of the track titles that are supposed to be on them, so I'm not looking at goddamn track 1, track 2, and shit. Maybe I'll get this thing off the ground.

who knows what kind of horrible albums hendrix might've made had he lived, but he would've made some amazing ones, too. dude was capable of pretty much anything, i think.

Thanks for posting that "First Rays" and listened to it all wknd, it sort of blew my mind. Some of those songs are incredible, the whole thing is brilliant!
― chr1sb3singer, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link
Yes, thanks again, tylerw. Even though I was pretty familiar with most of these songs, I was blown away by how cinematic the presentation of the material is here. The problem with all previous First Rays assumpilations was that they were all just collections of songs rather than continuations of the kind of thematic flow he exploited on Ladyland.
