170 miles in November and 253 miles in December. Maybe not all that impressive, but both about double the 2010 totals which meant I managed to claw my way back and exceed my 2010 annual total right at the death.

The Wichita Referee's Assistant (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 2 January 2012 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

2011 total: 3,597 (35 miles more than 2010)

120 rides, mean distance 29.98 miles, mode 28.3 miles.

Longest ride 71 miles.

The Wichita Referee's Assistant (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 2 January 2012 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

I did 3015 miles in the saddle in 2011, having done 839 in the last five months of 2010, after I got my first bike in a decade in July 2010.

234 miles in November, 391 miles in December, which was my third highest monthly total (518 in August and 407 in July). In December last year I rode only 19 miles; mind you, it was 26 degrees warmer (centigrade) this Boxing Day than last year - it wasn't riding weather at -14. I rode at least 10 miles every day from 21st December to 2nd January, covering well over 250 miles in that time.

Oh, and 98 workouts from July 2010 to end of 2010, and 242 in 2011.

4,131 miles in 2011
3,893 miles in 2010
4,036 miles in 2009

I think I've reached stability. Very few long rides this year, no sportives at all, but three night rides partly made up for it. No reason to think that, barring injury, it should be any different in 2012.

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

I did manage at least 300 miles every month apart from December, which was a tiny goal of sorts.

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

This year I want to do more miles than last year overall, ideally as close to 4000 as possible. I also want to do more long rides; I've rarely gone over 50 miles, and most rides are 20ish.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:30 (twelve years ago) link

not actually sure what I've done this year but it's only around 1500miles, which is poor. I need to pick one recording device and stick with it, that's for sure.

I've set 3000miles as a target for this year (getting out on non-commutes is bloody difficult with kids)which will include at least one multi-day thing (potentially a couple of TdF stage finishes in July) and a few night rides - the December one was freaking ace.... and a bit cold; down to -4, but dry fortunately.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

1500 miles last year that is of course

My main competitor has decided not to do our monthly or yearly challenges anymore. I am sad. But understanding. http://sickmouthy.com/2012/01/06/why-do-i-cycle/

Cycle computers, from $5 up to GPS units. Also you can us things like the strava App to log on your smart phone.

I use an app and website called Endomondo(.com). There are probably better for cycling specifically, but this tracks other sports too, which I found useful.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 6 January 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

I use this and log each ride in a spreadsheet. Because I like spreadsheets.

686 km mainly on the trainer so it doesn't count. Best January ever. Might go home and round it off to 700 it is crazy warm this evening in Pittsburgh.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

Doesn't count ^

257 miles for me.

almost half on the trainer. actually trainer miles count for more if there's any resistance on there imo - no breaks, no downhills.

dead precedents politics as usual (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 00:41 (twelve years ago) link

If I could make the trainer talk to the computer properly I could get average speed and power for the month. I averaged around 210W over last weekend's sessions. I've been mainly working through 'flat' profiles or the rolling hills profile which has a lot more up than down.

Time to start doing some interval work.

247 miles for me. Rubbish, but honestly, I'm just not that into riding at the moment.

So far for 2012:

Activity count: 42
Total distance: 308.42 miles
Total ride time: 19:59:28
Avg. Distance: 7.34 miles
Avg. Ride Time: 28:34
Avg. Speed: 15.43 mph

This is basically commuting back and forth to work. The weather's finally changing for good here so I plan to do a lot more and longer rides. I'm signed up for the Bike MS Pedal to the Point ride in August (150 miles/2 days) and I may sign up for the NYC Century in September.

It is unnatural, you're right, and I used to think as you do. Then I gave it a go. It does have a real charm to it, honest!

Mark C, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

Tonight's may be interesting... Standing water in a lot of places, deep water at buttsbury ford (you may have spotted cav wading in it this week). Am looking at big overshoes and sealskinz socks. Should be fantastic.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 4 May 2012 06:44 (twelve years ago) link

Good luck you two. Where are you riding to this time - are you heading anywhere Cavendish's lake? I wasn't working today so went off up into the Essex lanes (56 miles) - there was indeed a lot of surface water and the occasional section of road that had turned into a stream or pond. Also - it's cold. I had to wear winter tops and a gillet in the end. I set off (foolishly) in shorts, but ended up riding to my nearest bike shop and buying some leg warmers. I got a rear wheel puncture at the 41-mile mark in the rain, which wasn't fun to sort out. Then literally as soon as I got back on the bike the chain came off and I had to sort that out.

It's not just the riding in the countryside in the pitch black bit about these night rides that fails to attract me. It's the fact it's at night time, when I'd rather be sleeping. But I'll try to hook up with you two for some kind of (daylight) ride at some point, if I can overcome the large obstacle that is most of London between us.

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 May 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

Tonight's was supposed to be just me (and the regulars) but I managed to pick up a bug from Vic and don't want to be too far from home iyswim... So I'm hopefully going to go to Brighton on Sunday morning along with a bunch of veteran HGVs.
Riding at night in the countryside is very liberating, strong lights definitely required but it's truly great.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, and they're going through, or past buttsbury ford. I can send you a gps of last year if you want?

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, why not

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

when I'd rather be sleeping

Again, I 100% agree BUT occasionally it's worth doing something outside your comfort zone. And this is one of those times. Riding in the dark countryside is awesome, when you're in a group, and have a half-decent light.
