Come Anticipate With Severe Misgivings the David Fincher version of the Dragon Tattoo book

Great sweaters!

i didn't know the story and i found bits of this kind of difficult to follow, or rushed or something. the bank epilogue in particular was incomprehensible. i watched the swedish version and found that much clearer. but i thought the fincher version was, as per, beautiful to look at. also the key soundtrack moment (no spoilers) was breathtaking.

It's weird seeing a second movie adaptation esp. after reading a book (which I thought was pretty okay myself, although the second book hums along quite nicely IMO and the third is just a complete mess). On the whole I think this was maybe slightly stronger than the Swedish version with the caveat that it may be because I knew the novel that I didn't find it hard to follow.

the more i think about this the less i like it. the credit sequence had me roffling and i don't think it really had me at all after that.

i was expecting some hollywood dramaturgical changes, but some of them were really odd imo.

Really surprised at how crap the mystery was in this

After reading the hype about how the screenwriter didn't watch the Swedish version of the film, and how different it felt from the first version. From memory it seemed almost identical, just with a larger budget.

And saying the 'twist' was completely different, when it's a pretty non-core element of the story was very lame.

Not sure why my I wasn't more cynical about the marketing before watching the film to be honest.

Still, I quite enjoyed myself while watching the film.

You guys must be sweater-haters.

I was unimpressed by the book, so I felt no real need to see this movie. And the vogue article about Rooney Mara made it sound like Mara and Fincher have a perverted puppetmaster relationship that makes Hitchcock sound like a feminist by comparison. It was offputting.

I didn't like this nearly as much as Zodiac or The Social Network, but they're two of my favourite films of the past few years, so that wasn't a surprise. I did like it more than I expected to. I came to it completely cold, not having read the book and not having seen the original. For some reason I had it in my mind that it'd be all whirlwind style, like what I always imagined Run, Lola, Run would be. (Terrible, I know--prejudging a film based on having prejudged another film I haven't seen.) But it moves along carefully, and I did get caught up in the story. The coda--everything after the main story is resolved--lost me a bit, but no matter. There are such pointed similarities to Zodiac and Seven in spots, I do get the feeling Fincher is consciously supplying material for all the PhD theses he hopes get written about him one day. The thing that will stay with me is Rooney Mara--her performance is very affecting. It only took me 90 minutes to figure out she was the ex-girlfriend in The Social Network.

Well, the cinematography and set design was better than the other movie adaptation. That's all I've got.

Opening credits were such a non sequitur, and.. yeah

Starting to think all movies with strong female characters need a female director or at least someone female in a prominent behind-the-scenes role. Then again, I have met women who think Zack Snyder movies are ok, so results may vary.

Saw this film a second time and liked it more.

Saw this for the first time, went in cold (hadn't read the book or seen the other movies, didn't know the plot). Was pretty ridiculous. Deus ex hacker invoked numerous times. She's great, James Bond might as well be telling her story in flashback. Nazis, serial killers ... it even has a character basically ask another character "you know something is fishy, you suspect you are in danger ... so why did you stick around?" And never answers. Like, what is driving this dude to put his life at risk to solve this old mystery? "The Vanishing" it is not. It's assuredly made, but pretty silly.

been going back through the fincher filmography and this movie basically fucking sucks, way worse than benjamin button imo

you're better off rewatching the trailer 75 times

I wonder if fincher ever considered making this his first run at TV instead, because the structure and characterization as presented make absolutely no goddamn sense as a standalone movie

i'm sure he's run at a TV many times, but his friends usually stop him before disaster happens

for real though the appeal of this story/series is totally mystifying to me, and would have been unthinkable even a few years later I think

whereas Gone Girl, also based on a massive book thought of as belonging to a particular cultural moment, if anything gets a little better to me every time I revisit
