Baby I Love Your Way/ Freebird Melody is a great record. Kind of a Miami synth light pop sound, male and female vocals. I went with TTD though.

It was hard to go against Guns, but I must have heard that song so many times, most recently during a football game last weekend.

going inxs on this

Jordan Sarging (Brohan Hari), Saturday, 3 January 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Surprised by the "Wishing Well" love, when clearly "Sign Your Name" is superior.

Every George Michael single here is GOLD, especially "Monkey" (in its Jam-Lewis remix version) and "One More Try." "Love Bites" is the best of the power ballads listed.

Went with "Michael."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

*er, "Monkey."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

"Sign Your Name" is a good point, I forgot about that one.

With Oatmeal Sauce (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 3 January 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, god help me, but I like Cheap Trick's "The Flame" a little.

I like "Together Forever" better of the two Rick Astley tunes.

Wishing Well
just ahead of Father Figure and INXS

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Saturday, 3 January 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago) link

y'all know that it's really gonna be "sweet child 'o mine" that's gonna win this thing, right?!?

Mad Vigorish (Eisbaer), Saturday, 3 January 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Cheap Trick can mostly go suck ass, but I have a good friend who adores them, so go figure.
I love the Dream Police but otherwise it is the SUXXORS.

Anyway what about Sade? What was she doing in 1988? Reverend? She could be the peacemaker here, right?

Sweet Child o' Mine can suck ONE GREAT BIG DICK in 1988. I will sic Mark E. Smith on your ass. Don't even go there.

John D.??? Talk some sense into these naive dudes. Please.

With Oatmeal Sauce (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 3 January 2009 14:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I like Sade's "Paradise," but it didn't even hit the Top Ten.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I know, dude, and to be honest, I feel like some unknown force wanted me to vote for UB40 "Red, Red Wine" but I just couldn't do it. I really felt some pressure in my mind to vote for that one. But the truth is I didn't enjoy UB40 last time I saw them live and I met a Rastafarian reggae dude recently who adores the Smiths and he was at least willing to sympathize as to my reasons why I didn't enjoy UB40 live.

Brian Eno sounds so nice in my ears right now, though. God he sounds so good in my ears.

With Oatmeal Sauce (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 3 January 2009 15:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd have gone with "Sign Your Name" had it hit #1.

But please tell me I won't be the only "Man in the Mirror" vote.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 3 January 2009 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Bimble if you think you can get John D to join in your hatred of Cheap Trick you are sadly mistaken. Also your hatred of Cheap Trick is sadly mistaken. I'm being nice but I mean it.

I voted "Wishing Well" before reading anything else here. No other song was playing for me in my last semester of lol college.

This list explains why I feel absolutely no nostalgia for 1988, even though those were my salad days.

I'll take Will to Power, no contest.

Josefa, Saturday, 3 January 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I prefer Will To Power's 10cc cover, and their original material ("Fading Away," "Dreamin'"), all of which was played ad nauseum on Miami radio (weren't they from Miami? Don't know).

See, INXS had way better records than Kick in Listen Like Thieves and The Swing. New Sensation is not even their best song, Don't Change is.

Can anyone give me a you tube video of Cheap Trick with the white suits on in 1979 doing "Dream Police". I'm kindof traumatized trying to find this.

See someone repped for INXS, though! It's like DOOOOD "Need You Tonight" is not EVEN going to BEGIN to explain the wonderful INXS songs to be had. I'm serious. They had better records didn't they, redmond? Let's join the club, man. They had so much better fucking records.

No doubt, anyone bothering to investigate further will discover the wonderful joys of Shine Like It Does and the Nile Rodgers remix of The Original Sin.

This is where I point out Will to Power is Miami DJ Bob Rosenberg, who did edits on the first 2 Live Crew album, and this 1985 gem:

"Wishing Well" is such a terrible fucking overrated song. I'm voting for "Wild Wild West" because it's so bad it's good. "Gimme gimme wild west. Gimme gimme safe sex"!!

System, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Voted for "Need You Tonight" because a) to me it's the best of INXS -- the kind of easy-going menace presented here never surfaced in the more straightforward "New Sensation" or the oddly peppy given its title "Devil Inside" and b) I associated it with beginning to listen to good old WHFS 99.1 in Wash, DC and breaking out of the classic rock cocoon I'd lived in up to that point -- hearing it in my car and suddenly GETTING THE POINT that rock music could do something more than lie around being classic. Of course it then became a huge hit and was on the regular radio stations too, but I stuck with HFS.

Strongly considered "Wishing Well" and GnR here too. Can't hear the Billy Ocean as anything but a joke and considered voting for "Wild Wild West" before I realized I was thinking of "Don't Look Down" by Go West.

Apparently, it surprised me 10 years ago too.

I was thinking the other day that the "Sweet Child o' Mine" intro is a really good string-skipping exercise, then learned that Slash originally came up with it as a string-skipping exercise.
