how popular is Skrillex in the UK? Metal Hammer are covering him (probably due to Korn connection, but it backs up what dog latin says about nu-metallers liking him)

There's a certain subsect of UK society who may as well and will forever be US emo-punk-metallers with tattoos, ear tubes and all that. Kerrang, being the most popular music publication in the UK (IIRC) means these guys proliferate throughout Britain and so there'll always be a huge market for angsty, driving, fratty rock over here. Then there's the dubstep connection - and of course a lot of dubstep kids are into Skrillex. It kind fo creates a mush of a subculture where hardcore kids hang out with rudeboys, with quite a big crossover. I can see Skrillex playing some pretty big shows over here.

kerrang covers (or used to) cypress hill and the prodigy so it wouldnt surprise me in the least if they covered skrillex.

i hope that korn album is a total flop. i dread to think of dubstep metal becoming the next big thing

ach, frankly I couldn't care less if it is or it isn't. The next big thing is bound to be schoot whatever it is so if it's dubstep metal it'll be about as effective in pissing me off as much as anything else. The Korn/Skrillex thing sounds kind of great for the first 30 seconds until Jonathan Davis starts doing his tortured millionaire thing, and then you realise it's just a patchwork where korn get their bit and skrillex gets his. Skrillex seems to have a bit of an ear for strong melodies - I genuinely wonder what the van dyke parks collab will sound like. It seems so incongruous, but kind of makes sense at the same time.

Great piece from Nitsuh on My Chemical Romance, Skrillex and the origins of that world that people over a certain age will never truly get:

fully went into that thinking "i bet it's the now oldhat excuse of excusing skrillex based on his derivate mall screamo roots" and was not disappointed

late to this, and the "serious thoughts" portion of this thread seems to have run its course for the moment, but this music is a hell of a lot of fun, and i'm having a hard time seeing why it might be so bad and hated. thought i'm probably too old to really gi and will never be a serious fan, when i'm in the proper frame of mind, i like the joyfully anthemic melodies, the choppy adhd comedy and the ridiculous heavy metal bass drops equally.

diamonddave85 on "scary monsters and nice sprites":

...those are mall metal breakdown beats! just imagine those beats being played with a double-bass drum and the wobble bass being a chuggachugga guitar riff and you have a straight up screamo breakdown.

otm. first thing i thought when i heard the big bass in "cinema" was "o shit, that's a metal guitar part!" a lot of this does seem filtered through a nu metal/screamo sensibility, but it's way more generous and inviting than most of that stuff. skrillex's best move, imo, is that he jettisons the angsty, narcissistic ear punishment that so much teen rebel noise trades in, whether rock or electronic, while managing to retain the supercharged, jumparound intensity.

there's a lot of grousing upthread by people who fw this part but not that one. when it comes to tracks like "cinema" and "rock n roll", i like each element on its own but love the way they support one another. suspense gathers behind the sunny melodies when you know that mosh bass is about to wobble down and wreck the room, and the poptones are all the more lovely when they glisten back up out of a heap of broken speakers.

can's see why anybody who ever dug the prodigy, the chemical brothers or primal scream would have trouble clearing a bit of aesthetic space for skrillex.

mh, Monday, 23 January 2012 12:59 (twelve years ago) link

Prodigy maybe, but I don't see anything Skrillex is doing to be on par with the Chems or Primal Scream, both of whom have done way more than just Dig or XTRMNTR. I mean all the "big beat" Chems stuff amounts to like 6-7 tracks
