I wonder if the cast/Dan Harmon were warned ahead of time? This has to be the downside of having a Twitter presence, everyone's going to be baying for answers/reassurance.

RIP 2nd best comedy on television. Fuck NBC.

GOIT BUZZ TOYS (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

If it's not canceled but in time-slot limbo, that's a little more reassuring; putting a known quantity like 30 Rock against all the heavy hitters at 8:00 is probably a better move on NBC's part. But if Thursday is closed to Community, and Wednesday is the Whitney/Chelsea Handler Power Hour, there really isn't anywhere for it to go...

Part of me hopes the Thursday @ 10 drama flops and they go back to a 3 hour Thursday comedy bloc.

I mean, conceivably it could come back late in the season, or at the beginning of next season...but I fear that if it does, it'll be with serious trying-to-grab-ratings retooling.

I hate to say this, but I'd be less upset if 30 Rock was cancelled outright.

Let A Man Come In And Do The Cop Porn (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

shouldn't be surprised, really.

In any event, all 22 episodes ordered will be shot and aired.

encarta it (Gukbe), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

And guys, there's no ratings-grab they'll be able to do. This doesn't change anything regarding the show's future.

silver lining: donald glover will now be able to dedicate himself full-time to childish gambino. right, guys?

I'd already gotten my mind around the fact there was in no way going to be a fourth season, but I hadn't anticipated they might yank it in the middle of its third.

I just firmly convinced myself that Sony will sell the show to fx who will keep it going at 13 batshit episodes a year.

Yeah that's exactly what's going to happen.

Clay, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:16 (twelve years ago) link

i'm willing to jettison pierce if it saves on costs. or we could replace chevy with whiney on the cheap

was hilarious seeing the internet freak out over this today

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

xp me too! i don't know how these things work, but why wouldn't a cable station pick it up? copyright issues? it'd do better on hbo than bored to death, and that's not getting canceled anytime soon.

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

network shows have only been picked up by cable networks like a handful of times ever but for some reason people think that option is ALWAYS on the table and super likely

F Tim (some dude), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:24 (twelve years ago) link

My delusional scenario is community going the one life to live route.

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:25 (twelve years ago) link

for those of you unaware of the one life to live situation:

"Transition to The Online Network with Prospect Park

On September 16, 2011 current OLTL executive producer Frank Valentini was retained by Prospect Park for the serial as well as All My Children when both shows move on The Online Network. [40] On September 28, 2011, Prospect Park confirmed that One Life to Live will start on its The Online Network internet channel in January 2012, but without specifying the exact date.[9]

Since the agreement made between ABC and Prospect Park is not limited to internet television and does allow One Life to Live to be broadcast on traditional television, there was an announcement on August 3, 2011 about a possibility of One Life to Live airing on a cable channel. [41][42] On October 5, 2011, the project to bring One Life to Live to cable was reiterated in a New York Times article, where it is revealed that Prospect Park plans to first air episodes on The Online Network, then make them available on television on demand and, then weeks later, on cable television. [43] However, nothing has been confirmed or been made official about One Life to Live going to either TOD or cable."

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:26 (twelve years ago) link

It won't ever happen. Sons of Anarchy does better ratings on FX than community does on NBC. How far would community plummet on FX?

There's no copyright issue however. NBC doesn't own community, Sony does. XP.

Clay, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:27 (twelve years ago) link

if Community goes off the air anytime soon i am going to be very happy with my 60+ episodes and looking forward to future projects from everyone involved, not begging and pleading for a move to cable or a movie spinoff

F Tim (some dude), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:29 (twelve years ago) link

some dude: oh i know. it's just strange that it doesn't happen more often, when most cable stations would be happy to pull in community's ratings. and premium stations are all about the brand anyway, and what's better for your brand than preventing the next arrested development disaster? and i think in light of AD and futurama, it'd be more likely now than a decade ago.

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:29 (twelve years ago) link

cable stations might be happy to pull in community's ratings but a) those ratings would be even worse on a cable station and b) they won't pay the kind of money likely required to retain six main characters, some of whom can probably break out a bit

mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:33 (twelve years ago) link

seven characters, my bad

mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:34 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know tons about hollywood or w/e but i'm guessing another factor is that if you're an executive at, say, fx or tbs, and you want to move up in your profession or at your network, walking into a job interview and going "well in my time at fx i brought 15 major network cast offs onto our network and they did pretty decent ratings. i mean, for cable anyway. but the fanbase was really strong on twitter" is probably a lot less impressive than "i developed breaking bad"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:34 (twelve years ago) link

I think there's a decent shot NBC will give it a fourth season. Well, as good a shot as it had after the first episode of the season aired. It depends on how the mid-season replacements go really.

I also realise I was crowing on about the DOOM SCENARIO about 6 weeks ago.

encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:36 (twelve years ago) link

cable doesn't need as many viewers but they also need to have much lower budgets -- everyone on futurama had to take a pay cut and there was a noticeable dip in the production values of the animation

F Tim (some dude), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:37 (twelve years ago) link

Also somebody on twitter pointed out that Sony pushed Til Death to 4 seasons for the syndication value of passing 80 episodes, and that was on Fox which has a number of actual ratings successes. NBC still doesn't have shit except Sunday Night Football, a waning Biggest Loser, SVU, and now a dipping Friday night "hit".

encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:38 (twelve years ago) link

most cable stations would be happy to pull in community's ratings.

probably not for community's budget though.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:42 (twelve years ago) link

nbc is in such an incredible shambling state that community returning as a mid-season replacement or just coming back next fall are not even really long-shots. it's certainly on the table.

Clay, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:42 (twelve years ago) link

i can't help but feel like 4 seasons would have been a perfect length for the show and i still hold out hope that Sony will bully/bribe NBC into doing four full years for syndication possibilities

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:42 (twelve years ago) link

A move to cable just isn't going to happen for all the reasons mentioned on top of many more.

encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:43 (twelve years ago) link

and yeah the bigger cable channels are probably more interested in developing their own shows than picking up network castoffs.

this goes double for HBO, whose entire profile is based on developing (not just airing) "quality" programming.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:43 (twelve years ago) link

you guys who aren't up on harmon's old channel 101/acceptable tv stuff should REALLY check that out because the whole idea there is that if people don't like a show and 'cancel' it they've already got another idea down the pike. i'm sure he's gonna do something else awesome the minute community runs its course.

F Tim (some dude), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 01:45 (twelve years ago) link
