if you guys want to change the way people use a word feel free I have no problem w/ that

at the moment that is not the commonly accepted use of the term

iatee, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

phew glad you have no problem with that

ah, how quaint (Matt P), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

the "rape is a type of sex" idea just minimizes the severity of rape, at the moment it's really reminding me of clayton williams' inflammatory quote: "rape is like bad weather: if it's inevitable, you might as well relax and enjoy it"

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

I think saying "rape is a type of sex" is inherently wrong in 99% of conversational contexts. Rape is a form of violence that is acted out in a sexual manner. It's not a sexual position or type of sexual act, it's a action with a sexual component.

"Sex act" versus "action with sexual component" is where I'm getting to. So when we refer to "sex" to mean "a sex act" instead of the actual mechanics, it males this phrase seem bad.

this is a stupid debate and I have nothing invested in it, you guys can argue w/ the dictionary

iatee, Monday, 14 November 2011 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

iatee i'm not trying to change how people use a word i'm just saying it's glib to say "rape is a type of sex" and then insist that anyone saying "wait hold on there you can't just ignore a bunch of stuff by deferring to your made-up typology" is playing semantics games.

the oed says:

sex
1 (chiefly with reference to people) sexual activity, including specifically sexual intercourse:
he enjoyed talking about sex
she didn’t want to have sex with him
[in singular] euphemistic a person’s genitals.

rape
1 the crime, typically committed by a man, of forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with him without their consent and against their will, especially by the threat or use of violence against them:
he denied two charges of attempted rape
he had committed at least two rapes
literary the abduction of a woman, especially for the purpose of having sexual intercourse with her:
the Rape of the Sabine Women
2 the wanton destruction or spoiling of a place or area:
the rape of the Russian countryside

sex is "sexual activity, including specifically sexual intercourse." could be (literally) anything under the sun. hence "sexy." you know it when you see it. rape is a "crime" first and foremost. it does involve sexual intercourse (though as elmo points out it doesn't have to, legally speaking), but that is not above the other elements in its definition! rape isn't even a highly qualified instance of sex something, because force and non-consensuality "happen" before or along with the sex and make rape the specific thing that it is.

i mean, you can say what you want and argue that people don't think this way, what's the point when it gets the idea across, etc, but you can't back it up by pointing to the dictionary (which doesn't say much about the relationships between words, by the way) and then appealing to your received-wisdom-typology, which is being made because American culture has a bizarre relationship with sexuality and is more frightened of their own bodies than they are of killing other people. xposts

the thing that especially bothers me about "sex is a type of rape" -- which, btw, is also infuriating for its pointless & wrongheaded point-scoring pedantry and fuck you again for that -- is that it classes "rape" alongside other types of sexual activity -- the result being that whether you actually intend it or not, iatee, it puts it on a taxonomic level where it could be interchanged with other types of sex. and that's just stupid and ridiculous! like, okay, over here we have oral sex, anal sex, vaginal intercourse, fisting, pegging, dirty sanchez, whatever... and then rape? no.

the former are indeed "types of sex", and they describe the mechanics of the sexual act. and while "rape" necessarily involves sexual activity, it does NOT describe the mechanics of the act, only the use of coercion / the absence of consent. any of those "types" of sex can be nonsexual. they can all be performed as rape.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 00:19 (twelve years ago) link

can be nonconsensual, i mean

idk what that means, but w/e

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 02:11 (twelve years ago) link

there are a shitload of sexual actions, or sex acts, that aren't consensual

kind of like there are kinds of so many things that are illegal. just because you can drive on the sidewalk, while intoxicated, doesn't mean it's part of "driving a car"

Trying to pretend that "sex" only works in a positive context or in the context of normativity kills the word more than saying that rape is a form of sex imo

mh, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 02:40 (twelve years ago) link

idk if i get what you're saying about how it "kills the word?"

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 03:58 (twelve years ago) link

but whatever, i think we should look back onto the original context -- iatee's point is that raping children is "a type of sex", so it's perfectly okay to call the sandusky case a "sex scandal" in the news like it's in any way comparable or equivalent to a senator caught with a prostitute

fuck that

unless you manage to turn this debate into something about suburban sprawl I am prob not gonna stick around, just fyi

iatee, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 04:07 (twelve years ago) link

like I said I really don't care that much about arguing about the meaning of one particular word, you win, whatever

iatee, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 04:07 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, not a sex scandal in any normal sense of the term

kind of feel dirty for not noticing that was in the original context

lol I remember that from my childhood

The thing she is eating was - back then - called a "nigger kiss" btw. They changed the name not too many years ago, I'm sure it's mentioned in one of the racist or ronaldinho bottle opener threads

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 13 January 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

THey were called either that or Moors Heads (:/) in Germany but they changed the names too. Can't remember what they're called now. What I do know is that they're freakin' delicious.

ENBB, Saturday, 14 January 2012 04:13 (twelve years ago) link

They were first only known under the names Mohrenkopf ("Moor's Head") or Negerkuss ("Negro's Kiss"), but most companies changed the official product-name in the 1980s[citation needed] to the more neutral Schokokuss ("Chocolate Kiss"), Schaumkuss ("Foam Kiss") or to brand-specific names (the most famous brand being Dickmann's). In the South and the West of Germany they are still commonly known as Mohrenkopf. In Austria they are referred to as Schwedehttp://kkkorner.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/nbomb5.jpg?w=350&h=259en ("Swedish bombs").
