yeah having an electric grinder has definitely improved my coffee making experience.

I'm gonna scale back and say that I think it's permissible to have two coffees, one bag of whole bean for when you wanna enjoy the coffee and another pre-ground bag for when you want convenience

i might hire a servant just for coffee purposes

I find that the pouring for my pour-over, one cup, is maybe 2 mins (I get everything else ready while it's heating).

hmm - your grind size may be too coarse. try it with a finer grind and see if you like it better that way? the finer the grind is, the more flavorful the coffee gets, but there is a point of no return where the grind is too fine and the water refuses to percolate

Hmm. I started with a very fine grind and it was a little gross actually, like maybe overextracted. I'm pretty happy with it now although I could probably go a notch finer.

I'm enjoying some french press Ethiopian Harrar atm, not a coffee I want all the time but has a unique flavor

i am tired and i was thinking about what a shitty week/month this has been and i forgot to tell i hate coffee that on monday i was ready to be early for work and set up the coffee maker for 6 am. i got in the shower at like 5:50. when i got out i heard HISSSSSSSSS BLORP CHCHCHCHHCHCCH which is not how it's supposed to sound. i ran to the kitchen to discover i forgot to put the carafe back in the machine. it can only handle that until the water overflows up top. coffee was everywhere and i was not early for work.

also i got wf winter blend or something and it's good

two weeks pass...

i got pleasant morning buzz again and for the first time i feel a little bored by it. maybe it's too dark. unfortunately while i was thinking about it i swallowed wrong and choked and i could feel a little coffee was in my nose. it was extremely unpleasant!

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Sunday, 12 February 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

I put almond milk in my coffee today for the first time. I like it much better than soy milk but that's about it? It takes 3x as much to make coffee "milky", plus there's no mouth-feel.

I went to a 'hip' coffee shop near me that had a terrarium and played t-rex and the shins. I got an espresso and while the barista was making it I leaned and looked at how it was coming out. the barista asked me what I was looking at and I told him I was looking at the color. he kind of smiled and I asked what kind of beans they used. the owner showed me and told me that the beans were 'near the end of their shelf life' as if apologetically.

later the barista brought me another espresso on the house. I think he and the owner were afraid I would write a bad review on yelp. well I had two espressos and got really buzzed! the espressos were okay, not bad but not great.

ive had no coffee for two days which is quite unusual

two weeks pass...

i hate the bags that whole foods coffees come in. they do not open easily/well and i always end up spilling beans everywhere! grrrr.

tehresa, Monday, 27 February 2012 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i'm not sure what you're supposed to do with them. they have those wire closure things like paper bags do but you have to cut below them to open the first time so it's useless. i just dump the whole thing in a plastic food container.

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

i don't get whole foods coffee, but i dump my peet's beans in a plastic canister intended for holding flour or sugar.

I bought some 'kona blend' coffee from target today, I don't have high hopes

flagp∞st (dayo), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:34 (twelve years ago) link

Bought some of this today @ C-Town because I was out of coffee:

https://www.larrysbeans.com//

It looks like total bullshit pander-2-u fakeout off brand organic coffee, but maybe it has a rep in NC, who knows.

simulation and similac (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 February 2012 05:25 (twelve years ago) link

i keep my beans in a bamboo canister with a vacuum seal lid

now i understand how this keeps them cool and dry and out of light, but the airtight part sort of makes no sense - I mean, there is plenty of oxygen in there, they're going to oxidize anyway, so what diff does it make if they oxidize under fresh or stale air??

i got pacific rim blend, i forgot if that's what i wanted though

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

i got another bag of winter blend yesterday.

tehresa, Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

maybe i will buy a drip coffee maker?

tehresa, Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

my wf doesn't seem to have anymore winter blend. or i was just so sleepy and hungry while shopping this morning that i didn't see it. i didn't have any coffee before going!

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

also TWO times this week i got starbucks and i don't like starbucks. i got americanos both times.

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

sometimes i make americanos out of the illy pods we have at work if the coffee in the drip pot is all gone. but i just don't like them. it's just not the same. watery espresso doesn't really compare to brewed coffee for me.

tehresa, Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

I get the pleasant morning buzz from wf (pre-ground because I am lazy) and agree that the bag design is terrible. I cut the bag open and then use an office binder clip to shut it. On weekends I get lovely cappuccinos courtesy of the spouse, who uses Peet's Major Dickson blend and grinds them in a Rancilio grinder named Rocky.

quincie, Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

been practicing some pour over techniques, feel like maybe it does bring some additional distinction to the flavors, but idk i dont drink coffee that much

lag∞n, Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

aw the rocky is a p good grinder!

flagp∞st (dayo), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

I need to find a kettle w/ a spout like that

flagp∞st (dayo), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

the rocky is a p serious grinder - what espresso machine?

I don't find a huge diff btw the pour over and an ok drip machine tbh - the best single serve method I have found other than espresso is still a small press pot

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

idk feel like if you want to go truly zen w/ a pourover you should get a nel drip

feel like paper filters make the coffee taste paper-y :(

flagp∞st (dayo), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

i am pretty happy with my cuisinart machine. still haven't replaced my french press that broke and probably won't.

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

feiw that kettle, the bono, costs like 70 iirc. bu the time you add the other pour over gear you can get a very nice drip machine that you don't have to stand over for ten minutes to make a pot

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

sorry buono

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

agree about paper filters. helps to pre wet the filter with boiling water

communing w/the coffee is a profound experience

lag∞n, Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

over in east asia there's a company called tiamo that just copies all of hario's designs you can probably find the tiamo version of the kettle for half the price, unfortunately it doesn't look like they do retail sales in america but maybe you can find some nyc coffee shop that imports them wholesale for cheap
