chinatown bus, but it only goes to travel plaza outside town. cab it from there

amon (eman), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 00:52 (eighteen years ago) link

My dad once lived in the hotel behind the Travel Plaza. Peter Pan is only like $15 more and reliable. If it is raining you have to stand outside for Chinatown. Cool arcade games at the TP.

Haha, I love the I Heard It Through the Grapevine one, "How about some fries, with that shake?" We should go meet him. Are you dressing up for Halloween? I'm going to be Mary Hartman from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. My friends band is playing at the Ottobar on Sunday but that seems to be all that is going on.

Do i want to go to Washington DC and or Baltimore? they're only an hour or two apart, right?

i have a week off between jobs and flights are cheap. my best friend from LA would go w/me and we have a college friend that lives there.

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:29 (eighteen years ago) link

less than an hour apart!

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i tend to observe only holidays that give days off work. and i have to m o v e

d.c. -> baltimore is one hour by MARC train. can't recall if it runs on weekends but its only $7. by car, the same, but traffic permitting.

amon (eman), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:18 (eighteen years ago) link

so should i go? would it be a worthwhile trip?

i'm thinking high black population = records!

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

high black population = records!

but d.c. proves this wrong!

amon (eman), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I like both. Spend one night here, one night there. I have found much better records in the trash in Baltimore than any record store in DC.

barf bag special (mistymartinez), Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

For record shopping, go to the Sound Garden in Fells Point, Baltimore, there are some other good stores around there too. DC doesn't really have good record stores any more. Go to Sonar, maybe? The Ottobar?

I like DC, it is much more fancy and uptight and expensive though.

There's a potter's field close to the Travel Plaza! Travel Plaza counts as most disturbing "destination" in Baltimore area, imo.

grizzled bag lady at lexington market approached me for a cigarette this evening. i got as far as "i don't smo-" before she screamed "get the hell outta here!" about a foot away from my ear. and then proceeded with a torrent of abuse at the top of her lungs that was still going when i was a block and a half away c|:0{

i’m saying the city effectively shuts down across the board at 10 and that is not really what a sundown town is. like, yeah, i see how you can maybe bend it that way, but it’s an imperfect analogy at best.

Oh, Baltimore!
Have you forgotten who you are?
You're the place of Babe Ruth, Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer.
You're Johnny Unitas, Sugar Ray Leonard and Reggie Jackson.
You're Esskay Hot Dogs, Berger Cookies and Phillips Crabcakes.
You're The Star-Spangled Banner.
You're the Raven, never flitting, still sitting.
You're Francis Scott Key and Edgar Allen Poe.
You're Blue-crabs, Bertha's Mussels and Natty-Boh!
You're Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday and Mama Cass.
You're Frank Zappa, David Byrne and John Waters.
You're Fort McHenry, Camden Yards and the USS Constellation.
You're The National Aquarium, Penn Station and Harborplace.
You're Johns Hopkins, Loyola and Md Institute of Art.
You're Mt. Washington, Federal Hill and Fell's Point.
You're The Owl, The Hippo and The Cat's Eye.
You're as sweet as Domino Sugar and you're McCormick Spice.
Don't ever forget, you're everything nice.
Once upon a midnight dreary, Nevermore!
You're The Pride of Baltimore.

~Barbara Gookin
