Red Lobster: A Good Value or Ghetto?

Shit, where's the INDIAN chain restaurant?

Raita Way

I thought I was a high roller when I took my HS dates to Red Lobster. Do they still have those two-lb. biscuits? I swear there was a stick of butter in each one.

Oh how I long for the days when I had the metabolism of a bumblebee...

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 27 July 2003 02:56 (twenty years ago) link

Red Lobster was considered a treat when I was a kid. Not ghetto or at all. Or maybe we were ghetto, and the Lobster Ghetto was a step up?

Are there any good seafood chains? Pappadeaux is quality, but that's Cajun food. Joe's Crab Shack is kinda bleh. I liked Landry's, but the one in town got replaced by a Crab Shack.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:18 (twenty years ago) link

The Joe's Crab Shack in New Orleans is great, but a) it's the only one I've been to, and b) it's hard to find bad seafood in New Orleans, cause it's fresh nearly year-round. (That said -- JCS has the best crab in the city, period. I can't even think of a close second-place.)

But my experience has been that the seafood chains are only good in areas where fish etc. are available locally -- the Red Lobster where I grew up is no good at all, and that's about an hour and a half inland, I'd guess.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:35 (twenty years ago) link

i live a couple blocks from a seafood market ... their logo is "enjoy that fresh fish flavor!" you can just imagine the smells during the hot summertime (and i can imagine what mr. perry would have to say about the logo ...)

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:38 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know about the food, but Red Lobster is as good a place as any to give a tip much larger than a quarter to sexy waitresses with big ol' butts.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:40 (twenty years ago) link

Red Lobster isn't known for having the catch of the day when it comes to waitstaff.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:51 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe I've seen the commercials for Red Lobster so many times in my life (though not recently) and yet I've never been. I have, on the other hand, patronized the Olive Garden on two occasions.

the seafood lover in you (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:54 (twenty years ago) link

you mean you don't normally give tips larger than a quarter, mr. patrin? man, you a cheap mofo!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:58 (twenty years ago) link

The Olive Garden is just evil. It's hard to find a good seafood restaurant, period (inland) - but in every town of 50,000+, there's at least one decent Italian restaurant, maybe two.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:01 (twenty years ago) link

I went for the unlimited breadsticks. I stayed for the unlimited breadsticks.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:02 (twenty years ago) link

This must have been a decade ago, but I still think about those unlimited breadsticks.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:03 (twenty years ago) link

i've eaten celentano's frozen italian foods, which must be just as bad (if not worse) than olive garden.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:05 (twenty years ago) link

The thing about the Olive Garden is that there's probably no other place on Earth that looks less like an olive garden.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:06 (twenty years ago) link

...and you're lucky if you get more than three olives in each round of salad they give your table.

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:09 (twenty years ago) link

Olive Garden staff are as bitter and surly as they come, too. Unlimited breadsticks+cheap 'bottomless' salads=customers from the deepest pits of Hell.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:10 (twenty years ago) link

that's a-me!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:10 (twenty years ago) link

Actually I am a very good customer.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:11 (twenty years ago) link

you do give tips bigger than a quarter, i hope? (unlike a certain ILXor ...)

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:11 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not sure how a restaurant could make it worse for their employees than endless salads and breadsticks for prices any group of teenagers living large could afford.

Walking across hot coals to get to the table, maybe.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:13 (twenty years ago) link

Red Lobster: The cheesy biscuit-buns ain't as good as they used to be, but if i'm poor and craving some seafood or they're having all-you-can-eat shrimp, I'll go.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

I've only been to Olive Garden once, but man, it was tasty -- and I'm usually picky about Italian places. (Granted, I got Stuff You Really Can't Fuck Up, and the fried ravioli -- I'm pretty much an easy bitch for fried ravioli.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:20 (twenty years ago) link

I have never eaten at Red Lobster, an unfortune I can soon recitfy due to the recent opening of Manhattan's very own branch in Time Square. Hush puppies, anyone?

I don't know about Red Lobster near the coast, but at 250 miles inland, I paid $13 for a plate of soogy fried shrimp and no side vegetable. It was awful food that was expensive. How can you recopmmend that?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:06 (twenty years ago) link

Man, I'm all with the drunk typos. I had more vodka than I thought.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:07 (twenty years ago) link

that means i must walk past it every night on my way home from work ... and yet i've never noticed it! that situation must be rectified, of course.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:08 (twenty years ago) link

the new NYC red lobster that is

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:10 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, you must notice it, and keep walking.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:10 (twenty years ago) link

considering some of the shitty food joints in that area (i.e., it's a stone's throw from Tad's Steak House), that Red Lobster is def. one of the better eats there!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:13 (twenty years ago) link

You might want to save that judgement until after you eat there.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:16 (twenty years ago) link

(It just opened last week. We must christen it.)

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:18 (twenty years ago) link

i've eaten at Tad's Steak House ... whudda mistake ... a dirty kitty-litter box would taste better than that, so that's not a very high hurdle to leap!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:19 (twenty years ago) link

How do these bad bad restaurants survive with such high rents?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:20 (twenty years ago) link

a lunch-time fap is not out of the question ... (though not the week of august 4th cause i'll be outta town)

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:20 (twenty years ago) link

times square/bryant park = tourist trap. that's how they survive.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

Any chain seafood is COMPLETE ghetto. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm all for embracing the inner ghetto (or outer).

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:23 (twenty years ago) link

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

There is if you like food.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:24 (twenty years ago) link

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:27 (twenty years ago) link

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:29 (twenty years ago) link

you'll be with the NYC fappers in spirit ... if you want to be, of course

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:31 (twenty years ago) link

Oh like hell he will, he hates Christmas AND chocolate, fuck him. Fuck him in the ear.

I'm so there at a Red Lobster FAP, but I think we should go to the one in Wayne, NJ!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:32 (twenty years ago) link

Let's go to both!

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:33 (twenty years ago) link

what's so special about the wayne red lobster? wayne is hardly a ghetto, you know!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:35 (twenty years ago) link

Neither is Times Square if we want to be bitchy about this.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:36 (twenty years ago) link

wasn't trying to be bitchy, i was just curious is all.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:36 (twenty years ago) link

Oh like hell he will, he hates Christmas AND chocolate, fuck him.

See? Outcast. I am so alone.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:38 (twenty years ago) link

well that settles it ... the times square red lobster fap must coincide with the rockefeller square/ice-skating fap

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:40 (twenty years ago) link

Ok! Then also I will stop in middle of the street in kogirl outfit and take pictures of random buildings and the sky like all tourists do!!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:42 (twenty years ago) link

Tourists take pictures of the sky?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:43 (twenty years ago) link

I've taken a few pictures in NYC myself, but never of the sky.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:44 (twenty years ago) link

I did have a nightmare once that I was in Soho and heading to a bar and the sky turned red and hot and everyone ran into the nearest building to escape from it. That would be worth taking pictures of.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:45 (twenty years ago) link

Memo to Mr. Khaki Pants: Red Lobster is NOT "fancy dining" in the big city unless you are really, really POOR. Please, there is a fish place on every corner in the "ghetto".

My sister used to work at LJS and I used to BEG her to smuggle me a bag of those batter things that accumulate at the bottom if the fish case. She succeeded a few times.

fit and working again, Saturday, 28 December 2013 23:11 (ten years ago) link

I'm serious, she told me that Long John Silver had a "no batter" policy and that staff were not allowed to eat scraps! What is the point of working there if you can't eat the stuff? Also they don't serve it to customers deliberately.

Horrifying on its own but when you think of the garlic butter drenched frozen seafood and Cheddar Bay biscuits that it will accompany, may god have mercy on us all.

it's in the thread title, so every revive throws it up there on SNA. we should lock it now that i think about it.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:49 (three years ago) link

it's ok to make fun of poor, stupid, tasteless people for liking it in the other thread, we just have to be more polite about it.

the burrito that defined a generation, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 23:50 (three years ago) link

It is precisely because this thread calls out the customers rather than the food that I started that new, more 'polite' thread. It is up to others whether the focus returns to the customers or the food. I tried to indicate that the food is the subject in the OP.

If someone does make fun of poor people on this thread or the other, feel free to bash them for it. I have not seen any such posts yet.

Red Lobster one of those places like the Olive Garden, TGI Fridays or the Sharper Image I'm surprised hasn't reached the brink of bankruptcy yet.
