I really want an iRiver N10.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

nice. And it's Mac compatible, where the Creative player is not, so that's a bonus. As I have a PC at home and Mac at work, being able to move between worlds is esp. important to me.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I believe the reason you can't move easily btw PC and Mac w/an iPod surely has something to do with brand competition, no?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:04 (nineteen years ago) link

iPod is touted to work on both platforms. (Just not at the same time.) I think I had issues with iPod Shuffle on my PC because iTunes itself doesn't get along well with my PC. I have a cheap-ass, shitty hardware config, and iTunes won't burn CDs properly half the time, either.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:07 (nineteen years ago) link

so they discontinued the 40GB regular ipod, and so now there are the ipod photos, at 30GB and 60GB. the photo thing seems stupid, but 60GB for 449 is now looking like a fairly good deal.

i have no ipod at all, but i imagine 5000 songs are easier to go through than one would think. the ipod photo is slightly bigger and heavier than the regular ipod. although both are smaller than my current discman.

is the best thing to do to invest in the big guy, or will next year's models be sufficiently streamlined so that i should just buy the 20GB regular and think about this again in 18months?

chris vitamin, Friday, 4 March 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Mainly because of the "Okay, you're running iTunes so there's probably an 85%-95% chance that you already have an iPod but we're going to use our voodoo marketing to convince you that you need to spend even more money on something with reduced carrying capacity compared to the device you already own that already does the big thing we're pushing in our crack-like commercials! CONSUME!" vibes that I get from the thing. Honestly, how much lighter do you need your music-playing device to be??? Are those extra seven ounces REALLY bogging you down?

I see your point, but:

a) I love iTunes, and would have killed for an interface like this a decade ago,

b) the Discman that I own weighs significantly more than seven ounces. It's a first-generation Rio Volt, one of the first MP3-capable CD players, and it's frankly a bit of a tank. It's also starting to malfunction, as it's been used non-stop for the last few years, but I've gotten my money's worth out of it. And, as I've mentioned,

c) I sell all of this crap as part of my day job - we're a bunch of fairly grizzled MIDI and DAW cynics here, so it takes a LOT more than a slick ad campaign to get us to jump. Hell, we've made sales reps cry here. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but you catch my drift.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

the ipod does work on both platforms if you format it for windows. the mac will recognize a windows ipod. and if you have a program called macdrive, a pc can recognize a mac ipod. very simple. and you can easily transfer files AND listen to music. it's a matter downloading podmaster or ipod access or any of the other trillion programs that do this.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Really? So why did the nice lady at the Mac store tell me I could only use it on one computer at a time?

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:23 (nineteen years ago) link

What does the nice lady at the Mac store get out of opening herself up to being named in a capricious copyright infringement suit as an enabler?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

i haven't used a shuffle. maybe it's different, but i highly doubt it. i hook up ipod regularly to at least four computers and never ever have a problem. i think she was just being ms. corporate.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

There's also an option in the Preferences of iTunes to turn off automatic synchronisation. For the larger iPods at least, if you turn this off all the computers you want to use your iPod on, you don't have to worry about iTunes wiping your music (caveat: I don't have an iPod Shuffle, so can't confirm if it works on that model as well, but I don't see why it shouldn't).

carson dial (carson dial), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

it works just like that.

Ed (dali), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

There really needs to be a new dance called 'the ipod shuffle'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, you stumble around aimlessly, staring into your palm.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I just got one for my birthday. I like it, but don't love it. I don't have an issue with its interface. That doesn't really matter that much to me. What I do dislike, intensely, is that the Shuffle does not allow you to connect and update your tuneage without updating the entire collection of songs you have already loaded. There are no workarounds, and if I just want to add two or three new songs, I'm screwed. Also, if you want to keep the songs on your Shuffle and delete them from your computer, think again. The Shuffle won't allow you to keep the songs you have unless they are also on your computer. These things may sound stupid objections, but I think they are significant limitations.

Then again, since the Shuffle is essentially a gateway drug to encourage you to upgrade to the iPod, I guess those limitations help in that encouragement.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I was surprised by how controlling the Shuffle + iTunes combination was, how much it wanted to tell me how to use it. I don't know why on earth I would ever be surprised by Apple making something hermetically sealed and only usable in a single specified capacity.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

the Shuffle does not allow you to connect and update your tuneage without updating the entire collection of songs you have already loaded

yeah, what the fuck is that about? i thought there might be a workaround?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

solution to every one of these problems: don't use iTunes

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

You can't NOT use iTunes. If you don't fill it up using iTunes, you ain't listening to no music.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:56 (nineteen years ago) link

feh

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I tried opening it on my PC as an external usb drive, and filled it up that way, and nothing would play. The shuffle kinda has its own version of iTunes that it runs, and unless you drag and drop the songs into the program properly (so to speak), they won't play.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

doesn't it just randomly upload 1G of songs, isn't that its point?

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

if u can use it as a usb flash drive no doubt someone will have a hack up that allows you to load it up with something else, if it doesn't already exist

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

here's a question: my mum got a first generation ipod (3 pounds sterling wtf (don't ask) but she doesn't have a mac in the house. is there any software she cd use to allow her to use a 1st-gen on a pc or are they utterly incompatible?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, that's everyone's dream mp3 player. Pay $150 bucks, then go home and comb the internet for hacks so you can use it the way you want to.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

YOu and your anti-iTunes heresy. You Cathar of the Mac world you.

Ed (dali), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:01 (nineteen years ago) link

you can drag playlists into an ipod shuffle, and put what you want on it, but once you plug it into another computer it asks you to replace the library. if you don't want to replace it, it unmounts, very weird.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

shit I thought it would be more avant-garde; totally blind selection.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Ed (dali), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:08 (nineteen years ago) link

iTunes works just fine in the home. Sometimes it'll spit out a sequences that'll just bring me to my knees. How does it know? How does it know?

This is so OTM. I find myself doing this all the time.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 6 March 2005 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

i heartily recommend anapod explorer. in fact, all the redchair stuff is absolutely fantastic, with new updates every few weeks on average. itunes for pc is a total clunker with a massive footprint - i thought we'd been through this?

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 6 March 2005 16:57 (nineteen years ago) link

'look in the lower right-hand corner of your iTunes window (on your computer, not your iPod) and find the clickable button with the picture of an iPod on it (there are two of these, you want the one that doesn't have an eject symbol on it). Click it, and you'll see the mythical preference pane that you didn't even know existed. Click the radio button next to "manually manage songs and playlists," and you're in business.' - http://www.billpalmer.net/ipodgarage/ipod000106.html

so apparently that turns off auto-sync. next step is to get songs onto the ipod w/o iTunes.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 6 March 2005 19:33 (nineteen years ago) link

which anapod seems to do, or this plugin apparently works very well too (for WinAmp) --> http://winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=138888

i mean apple's pretty clear about how to turn off auto-sync, this guy makes it seem like some sort of big secret. i don't know ANYONE (incl my computer-illiterate friends) who have kept it on, or not figured out how to do it. read one manual!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 6 March 2005 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

i got a shuffle for valentine's day, and really love it. i've got a pretty old 20gb pod that i'd been dragging to the gym in spite of the fact that the clip on the holder had snapped off, which meant i had to sling a little camera bag over my shoulder while working out. now i've just got the tiny thing aroung my neck, which i forget is there sometimes. i'm enjoying the shuffle, and haven't had any problems with it. it's so small and light that it'll be hard to go back to the big pod except when i'm travelling.

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 6 March 2005 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I got a small Shuffle today to carry around - much better size than my old 20GB, so I can carry an ipod+keys+phone and other stuff without any trouble and without requiring a man-bag.

Also less breakable than a regular ipod, which means I can take it to work instead of lugging around a big radio and listening to sports talk when I'm by myself.

POST-SCRIPT: This is exactly why I settled on the Shuffle. In the end, the tiny size won me over- here's to living backpack-free! I made my first playlist in iTunes (6 hours of high-quality MP3s and the damn thing isn't even full) on Friday, and have been rocking it all weekend. Best 2 bones-and-change I've spent in ages.

do you guys not have coat pockets? I mean, I would love to have shuffle w/ an order of magnitude more space... even if that means giving up on the screen, but the space is sooooo tiny!

The Shuffle lives in a coat pocket right now! If you read upthread, you'll see that I was lamenting the size of my MP3 Discman, as it was an early, comparitively bulky model, and pretty much required the use of a man-purse.

my 80 gb is all full and since i use my ipod as a way of backing up my mp3s im sort of considering investing in the 160

max, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I just got the 80 Classic to replace a old and broken mini and I LOVE the new one. I only have about 16GB of music total so I'm swimming in leftover storage space...enough to put movies on it for traveling (if I ever go anywhere).

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

geez, a 8 gb nano is $200 and an 80 gb ipod is $250! that's ridiculous. (how i wish the shuffle had a screen! it's quite cheap now, but i KNOW it would drive me up the wall.)

Maria, that's exactly why I got the 80 even tho it's way more than I "need". It didn't make financial sense to pay $200 for 8GB!

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I might have bought the iPod touch if I were you Laurel.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Really? Cos I wd have had to pay $400 for the 16GB which would BARELY hold all my stuff (if even) and be full immediately. I don't need the touch functions that badly.

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess it would have given me minimal internet access b/c I do not have own computer...but I didn't have the dough anyway.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I have about 16GB of music & stuff but am resigned to getting something smaller because I want to be able to run with it, and this is less likely to do harm to something with flash memory than a regular ipod with a hard drive. The nanos definitely give you less memory for your money though.

Maria, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i fucking LOVE my itouch. one of the things i love doing is standing in some street and watching who has unprotected internet connection. lol am i sad or what? it's been great breastfeeding and checking my mail. i was never much of an ipod user, but ever since getting the itouch, i've been listening to more music. typing on it is okay but a bit of a hassle.
