Pit Bulls: What's the appeal?

The crap people get for making generalizations on other threads has a lot to do with assuming their particular aesthetic evaluations are universal, whereas the pitbull issue is more of a society-as-a-whole thing, insofar as there are public attacks, etc. (Not that this is exclusive to pitbulls, though, obviously.)

Clarke B., Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

How many 'public attacks' by pitbulls are there really? By 'public attacks' I assume you are only referring to a dog attacking a complete stranger in a public space, ie while out for a walk. I have never heard of any such attack. And if there have been some, that doesn't necessarily mean that pits are any more dangerous than other breeds. So does anyone here have any experience with pitbulls going crazy and biting people?

uh, I think dyson did!

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:35 (twenty years ago) link

There was a horse involved. Pits are known to be aggressive towards dogs and other animals.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

FWIW, I think those part-wolf dogs are WAY more unpredictable and dangerous than your average pit.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago) link

you've confused dyson's and gygax!'s stories.

I *got* one because it was at the pound, was a little tiny baby puppy, and I wanted a dog. Also, he was adorable. I got the second because owning the first one proved to me that many misconceptions of them were just that - misconceptions, and being around Zero all day had relieved many of my own misgivings about owning a pit mix. I watched that dog like a hawk from the moment he was first around my son, and the most aggressive thing that has ever happened between the two of them is that Zero sometimes wagged his tail so hard that it knocked Spencer over. Zoe is a big lovebug, and the worst she has ever done is licked someone until they were positively covered in dog spit. I consider myself pretty lucky to have found two great dogs.

Public dog attacks: back a-aways up on thread there was a link to stats on fatal attacks- about 12 a year for the past 36 years-

Location of Attack
25% of all fatal attacks were inflicted by chained dogs
25% resulted from dogs loose in their yard
23% occurred inside the home
17% resulted from attacks by dogs roaming off their property
10% involved leashed dogs or miscellaneous circumstances

-and all but 9% were on toddlers or elderly people.

Of course that doesn't mention bites which are surely much more frequent.

I just watched a documentary about dog fighting in Chicago, and it made the point that the cause of some pitbulls ultra-aggressiveness is their owners, not something inherent to the breed. Pits on average score 83% on temperment tests, whereas the average across all breeds is 80%. These poor dogs are treated so horribly by those who are supposed to be caring for them that demonizing the dogs seems like rubbing salt in their wounds and a form of blaming the victim. I don't understand how someone could blame an animal for an attack when from birth that animal has been abused, denied any socialization, and trained to attack anything that moves.

This thread pissed me off then and it does now. Pit bulls are fucking great. If you get mauled it's probably because you're a bad person, or were in a past life.

In short, pit bulls are better then people.

k3rry (dymaxia), Sunday, 3 October 2004 07:54 (nineteen years ago) link

It's such a shame. Pitbulls can be loving & faithful pets. Invariably it's the owners. Occassionally you get viscious dogs, but that is not exclusive to Pitbulls, it's just pits can do more damage. I don't know any pitbulls myself, so I am still very wary of them. I would love to get one, but then I'd never wholly trust the dog around my kids, which isn't fair to the dog.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Pitbulls are loyal but territorial.. They attack when someone threatens their space. But that's not the same as being aggressive. They're smart dogs, but just like kids, some grow up to be assholes when the owners/parents don't train them well.

A pair of marauding pit bulls emerged from the edge of the bayou beyond New Orleans as the floods receded. Bred as fighting animals, their bloodlust had been sharpened by starvation. The dogs, which were wearing collars, had survived for more than two weeks but food was scarce.

The two pit bulls take turns attacking the bull They stalked towards their prey, a lone bull: a massive beast more than 10 times their combined weight. Like a wrestling tag team, the bitch and the dog attacked with awesome ferocity, leaping at the bull's head and latching on to its muzzle.

The stricken bull repeatedly shook the dogs off, flinging them up to 15 feet in the air. But they took turns to keep up the attack, exhausting the bull which was by now smeared with blood. Even after the bull trampled the bitch, leaving it dazed, the dog stepped up its attack.

The terrifying assault highlighted the US military's concern that pit bulls would form packs and could attack or even kill soldiers.

It was too dangerous for an unarmed witness to intervene but The Sunday Telegraph flagged down a National Guard truck. Seeing what was happening, a soldier shot the bitch in the head.

The dog paused before resuming the attack. It took two bullets to stop it dead.

Um, not for nothing, but ANY deliriously hungry dog who was starved for 2 weeks would attack that thing. Focking idiots.

The ancestors of modern pit bulls, English and French bulldogs, and other related breeds were powerful mastiffs bred for farm work. Specifically, these dogs accompanied farmers into the fields to assist with bringing dangerous bulls in for breeding, castration, or slaughter. The dogs, known generally as bulldogs, protected the farmer by subduing the bull if it attempted to gore him. Typically a dog would do this by biting the bull on the nose and holding on until the bull submitted. Because of the nature of their job, bulldogs were bred to have powerful jaws, muscular bodies, and the resolve to hold onto a violently-struggling bull, even when injured.
