All I've bought recently was at the Hard Skin/Stupids gig just before Xmas - got Make My Tea 7" & Fucking Skins 10" by Hard Skin and the new Stupids 7" Feel The Suck.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 January 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno what i have bought lately.

like, i finally grabbed the US girls LP (love it.)
and i got an Ali Farka Toure LP, the "Sprigs of Time" comp on Honest John's, and the sun city girls "napoleon & josephine" 7"

for my b-day, arturo & keegan got me kool keith - sex style, the best of bar carter (yazoo) and a copy of the Charles Manson LP on awareness.

i got a really nice delmore brothers 78 (the frozen girl/bury me out on the prairie), but i should talk about that on the 78s thread.

keegan traded me three more volumes for my Stash Records catalog, and then i bought another one--comps of early blues & jazz with risque content.
"pot, spoon, pipe and jug"
"jake walk blues"
"tea pad songs vol. 1"
"street walking blues"

ian, Friday, 2 January 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i won some random crap on ebay too, come to think of it. they just haven't arrived yet.
a blues comp on Herwin--"Sic Em Dogs on Me"-- and from the same seller, a don drumond/skatilites LP on treasure isle.
and a copy of Robert Ashley's "Atalanta" box, even though I think the box has torn corners :\ but it was affordable.

ian, Friday, 2 January 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link

two posts up, that ought to say "best of BO carter."

ian, Friday, 2 January 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Is that US Girls LP in the Grouper/Inca Ore style? More song-y?

On a Siltbreeze tip, I finally bought the Sic Alps US EZ LP after seeing a copy in an actual real-world non-internet shop. Had already ordered direct from Siltbreeze ages ago, but it'd been over month or so without confirmation, so I guessed it wasn't coming and went ahead and bought it. And then the mail copy arrived. So I now have a spare. But hey..... thaaaaat's life!

hologram of balls (gnarly sceptre), Friday, 2 January 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Went nuts in Memphis and bought:
NODZZZ
The Rebel "Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetable"
The Rats
A Frames / Climax Golden Twins collab 10"
Tyvek double 7" and another 7"
that newish Times New Viking 7" ep
Amon Duul 2 "Viva La Trance"
Compulsive Gamblers "Crystal Gazing Luck Amazing"
Freddie Hubbard "Best of the Atlantic Years" 2lp comp
Game Theory "Lolita Nation"
an Othar Turner 7" recorded in 1967 (but its not fife! shit)
and The Nerves reissue (my girlfriend actually bought that for me in Seattle)
May be forgetting something.

Trip Maker, Friday, 2 January 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

yo ian did that US girls get repressed? i got the runaround from siltbreeze on that, and then i really wanted my der TPK so i just jettisoned the US girls record from the order. i still want it!

also, on first listen, the der TPK LP is about 70% as good as the first.

69, Friday, 2 January 2009 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

New DTPK is only about 30% as good as the first, and I'm only counting the parts where vocalist is not intoning. Intoning parts about 3% as good, give or take 3%.

good luck to you ladies--you need it (contenderizer), Friday, 2 January 2009 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the intoning is a bit much on the new one, agreed

69, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I also got the new Comet Gain 7" and a couple of Liechtenstein 7"s at the Comet Gain/Liechtenstein/Pains Of Being Pure At Heart gig also just before Xmas. I'd been looking for one of those Liechtenstein singles for months and never seen it anywhere including Ebay, so I was v happy to see it on the merch table for £3.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 January 2009 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

US Girlz, I dunno if it's been re-pressed. I think we still have it in stock, if you want me to mail u a copy pete. I still need to check up on a replacement propeller for you as well. Anyway, the U.S. Girls record is more song-y than Grouper/Inca Ore stuff that I've heard. There's a Bruce Springsteen cover.

ian, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

disagree on the TPK, I've been liking Games for Slaves a lot better than the first one. but I heard both of em at the same time so it might just be that the higher fidelity on the new one sounds punchier and Harmful Emotions will take longer to "get." track 3 on the new one is killer.

also, back up a second, Ian likes Kool Keith??

dmr, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:46 (fifteen years ago) link

i am a dilettante.

ian, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link

hip hop tourist.

ian, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I have most Kool Keith up to Black Elvis. then I dropped out.

Sex Style is pretty twisted

dmr, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah ian would you hold that for me? i havent played propeller since the first time, so if you have a flat copy of that, we can exchange mail!

69, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Also a dodgy but fun cover (by Witch Queen) of T Rex's Get It On, cept here it's just called Bang a Gong.

Witch Queen is also Gino Soccio btw

dmr, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i was uninspired at the record store today. plus, i was bored. i wanted something great, but...i did finally pick up the mississippi irma thomas thing. i didn't get the der tpk album cuz you guys scared me. and i LOVED the firstsiltbreeze thing. got some miles davis records, python lee jackson album, lonnie liston smith, deodato....um, some classical stuff. some stockhausen. kinda curious about the western mass psych comp with the byron coley linernotes, but didn't know if i really wanted to spend my credit on that. i mean i was thisclose to buying fennesz vinyl, that's how uninspired i was.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean i almost bought a CD!!! that's how uninspired i was. kinda want that 7 cd fat possum blues thing with all the old timers on it. i'll bet that's got some cool shit on it. plus, for 7 CDs it's fairly cheap.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago) link

man scott, you should go back & the get the Der TPK. I like it a lot.

ian, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

joseph spence - living on the hallelujah side (Rounder LP, recordings from 74 & 78. Great. Bahamanian guitar.)

ian, Saturday, 3 January 2009 04:52 (fifteen years ago) link

is it rounder who put out all the weird ravaged versions of lps on cds? like freedom highway by the staples or avalon blues by mississippi john hurt, but without any of the original tracks? i guess i know their name from then and now.

schlump, Saturday, 3 January 2009 05:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I have no clue.. I don't think I've ever owned a Rounder CD. Yazoo's CDs are great, and so are County's--usually more tracks than the LPs plus great notes extra stuff.

ian, Saturday, 3 January 2009 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I picked up three obscure records about an hour ago:

T. Rex. - Tanx ($2)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid ($4)
Gary Numan - Telekon ($2)

"80s Baby" (Z S), Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

got a bunch of dancey 12"s w/ christmas cash

King & Hound edits - Burnin' Up / High Pressure Days
Giorgio Moroder & Harold Faltermeyer - Evolution (reissue) <-- so epic!
Charlie - Spacer Woman (reissue)
Juan Maclean - The Simple Life
Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane & Justus Kohncke rmxs)
Soft Rocks - Umut 2000 / Slowdown

dmr, Saturday, 3 January 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link

yesss I scored some Peruvian vinyl (5 LPs) at the crazy flea market here in Cusco. More details later, but one is a "Super Disco Salsa" cash-in thing from the 70's with sides that are one long mix, one is a "Best Of Criollos" type thing, and three are records by groups. No rare psych like El Polen, unfortunately. I'll have more chances to look. Some Peruvian dude carrying another LP asked me if I was selling them! So there are other vinyl hounds out there in these parts.

also, on eBay:
Joke Flowers/Victory Acres LP, inspired by ILM on this thread
The Bevis Frond - Sprawl 2LP, replacement cuz my copy skips on the awesome "Boa Constrictor"
United Bible Studies - The Arboreal Observatory LP. My first lathe cut LP! Don't know how many they made but I love love love this band so I snapped it up.

gonna have some good listening party nights when I get home in March.

sleeve, Saturday, 3 January 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

also s34n, how do you like that Rebel LP? I like it, but think I like the other new LP on Sacred Bones better--Children's Hospital LP is stellar sci-fi/post-punk/gritty mess.

ian, Saturday, 3 January 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

"Compulsive Gamblers "Crystal Gazing Luck Amazing""
^^ great LP. hard to find on vinyl actually!

ian, Saturday, 3 January 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago) link

the latest, christmas-money-enabled batch:

Loren Connors - The Moon Last Night 12" single
Steve Moore - Vaalbara LP on Noiseville
Gang Of Four - Entertainment orig. LP (finally)
Fripp + Eno - Evening Star orig. LP
Francoise Hardy - Francoise... LP
Kraftwerk - Computer World LP (finally)
Cole Medina - Medina's Magic b/w Cole Loves Your Insides Out 12" (repress?)
A Mountain Of One - Ride EP repress
Friendly Fires - Paris 12" (w/ Aeroplane + Justus Kohncke remixes)

New Years Eve is a bad day to go record shopping, I ended up with a lot of obvious (yet necessary) choices. I am absolutely loving the new Steve Moore LP, though, it's far dronier and more abstract than anything I've heard from the guy at this point.

psychgawsple, Saturday, 3 January 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

ian im listening to children's hospital right now! so so so good. veers from USofA to squelchy wave-type stuff. my favorite a-frames-related project. whats the rebel LP like?

as a vinyl thread aside, i found a rare iron and wine 7" stuck in a david bowie sleeve this morning, thought lost since 2002. i wanted to sell it so bad for the past three years, but figured i had lost it at my college radio station. shows how much i listen to my warped copy of aladdin sane (and iron and wine)!

Question from a non-collector: is that really what a "VG+ to VG++" cover looks like? I appreciate it's old but it looks pretty beat up

(I know nothing about the band either, just curious)

I thought the cover looked a bit tatty myself tbh

Looking at it, that's about right:

There's Brand New (unplayed), there's Mint (which often means 'played once, shows no signs of wear), there's 'Excellent' which is 'a slight amount of wear, nothing drastic.

The "VG" is about right: Adding plusses is somewhat meaningless.

Hey, Ian (and DMR), I LOVE the new The Rebel. It's like "The Rebel plays Country Teasers Greatest Hits Live" or something (it was recorded at WFMU, was it a broadcast? Its mostly Teasers songs, too, I think but I'm not super-knowledgeable of their whole back catalogue)Maybe I should have gotten the Children's Hospital, too, I don't remember seeing it at Goner, though.

God I feel terrible and almost took the day off but I dragged ass in to work since I had the last two weeks off. Fuuuuck.

Trip Maker, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

picked up a few things the other day...
Count Basie & his Orchestra - Listen, you shall hear (great recordings from 1937 - I'm really loving this stuff at the moment, though making tentative little steps into it as I don't want to overdo it, and also I don't really know where to start, so I just pick out familiar names)
Tommy Dorsey - Jazz Tribune Volume 1&2 (a great 2 disc set from 35-37, and with excellent newspaper styled liner notes, in french & english)
Millie Jackson - Caught Up (really good record, but even better artwork)
Elvis Presley - Clambake (I actually love all the throwaway soundtracks, and you get great bonus singles on them too - this one has Guitar Man an Big Boss Man)

scout, Monday, 5 January 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Few things I picked up this weekend:

Pink Reason & Hue Blanc split 12"
World's Lousy w/ Ideas vol. III
Crystal Antlers EP on T&G
Blue Sabbath Black Cheer - We Like New Blockaders LP
Police - Ghosts In the Machine for 50 cents at a thrift store. Sounds just like it used to.

really digging claude king's 1970 album Friend, Lover, Woman, Wife. "Beertops And Teardrops" is my anthem of the week. i guess he's best known for "Wolverton Mountain". does a GREAT "House of the Rising Sun" on this album.

i won two more delmore brothers LPs on ebay--part of the series on Old Homestead. I think it's radio broadcasts, but tbh I'm not sure. in any event i don't think there's much duplication with the LPs on county. also i got a really nice UK press of pharaoh sanders first album on ESP/Fontana. i lost the mountain bus LP though. any chicago hounds find it in a thrift store or dollar bin, buy for me! grateful dead-esque private psych on the Good label.

ian, Monday, 13 July 2009 02:50 (fourteen years ago) link

mountain bus one of those records that used to sell for a zillion dollars and now, you know, is more affordable. one of the benefits of ebay, really.

sinnamon - thanks to you 12" (awes!)
lime - babe we're gonna love tonight 12" (was going to buy this on discogs for 20 pounds, found it used at amoeba for $5!)
kebekelektrik - magic fly 12"
loverde - die hard lover/my world is empty (without you) 12" (production by patrick cowley on one track but it's nothing special)
mugwump - tellakian circles 12"
'the dance masters' dj sampler 12" with cherchez la femme and gq's "disco nights (rock freak)"
linkwood family, etc - firecracker ep 02
fist of facts ep on claremont 56

The Hunches - Home Alone 5 lp
The Intelligence - Boys Annoy ep
Kurt Vile - Fall Demons 7"
Real Estate - Suburban Beverage 7"
Real Estate - Fake Blues 7"
Thee Oh Sees - Tidal Wave 7"
U.S. Girls - Me + Yoko 7"

city worker, Monday, 13 July 2009 13:26 (fourteen years ago) link

psychgawsple: you should keep an eye peeled for Sinnamon's "He's Gonna Take You Home" for the epic dub on the flip (with lots of orgasmic femme coos) and "I Need You Now" (tho never for cheap, seeing as it's a classic proto-house track).

beta blog, Monday, 13 July 2009 14:11 (fourteen years ago) link

"how does that tempest compare to the second album, scott?"

i like the first album better. i like that mix of lunkheaded hard rock and prog/psych. i like the second album too though. it definitely has its moments. no holdsworth pyrotechnics though.

i should clarify: BOTH albums are pretty pricey if you are talking about U.K. copies. the one i bought is just a u.s. promo. probably most of the u.s. copies for sale are promos or sealed cut-outs. sold like five copies here.

Got a whole bunch of 45s this weekend (plus a metal box to tote 'em in!). I'll try to list the highlights soon. One of the more interesting ones is a 70s (presumably Chilton-less) Box Tops single on Stax.

everyone should hit up Scott for records before ebay; dude has plenty of stock and grades his stuff honestly. A+++ would ILX again.

meanwhile last Saturday I went out to Long Beach to investigate some guy's Craigslist ad offering a selection of 80,000+ records for sale (not counting the 45s). didn't get murdered or anything (despite the cross street being "Hidden Lane") and yep, 80k records, all being sold between 75 cents and 3 bucks; my buddy spent $40 on something on like 30 records, including 1st pressing monos of the first three Byrds albums. apparently the guy bought out a record store up in San Francisco and hauled it back; now he's buying 200+ records a week in an effort to make the place run like an actual store despite being operated out of the back of his house.

I took a few pictures which I'll upload later. 80000 records looks exactly what you'd expect them to look like. it was fucking nuts.

van smack, Monday, 20 July 2009 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link

How is The Fall reissue?

"If this appears, it has nothing to do with the Beggars remastering and I would question what source the vinyl has been mastered from. The original tapes were in Beggars tape library until the beginning of this year and since then they've been sitting in a stack of tapes in a London mastering studio waiting their turn to be remastered."

eleven months pass...

the beets is one of the only good records on captured tracks imho.

― ian, Thursday, May 21, 2009

an emusic interview with the label's founder got me sampling some of their (digitally-available) stuff. i like it! well, some of it, at least, especially the 80s-homages, e.g., the soft moon's breathe the fire.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 July 2010 09:34 (thirteen years ago) link

dunno about soft moon, but as far as i can tell, the beets is still one of the only good records on captured tracks imho

picked up 3LP A-frames 333 comp today, listening now. so awesome to hear "new" shit from these guys. some of the c. 2007 demos (from aborted 4th lp?) up there with their best. really like the rough, spare feel overall.

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Saturday, 17 July 2010 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean rough & spare compared to other a-frames, tho that's a game of inches

dunno about soft moon, but as far as i can tell, the beets is still one of the only good records on captured tracks imho

really? i'm kinda digging a number of this label's titles (at least the :30 samples), e.g., veronica falls; minks; wild nothings; cosmetics; and beach fossils. basically all stuff that taps into a certain 80s memory bank for me (i am old).

upon further investigation, tho, a lot of the other titles are between unmemorable and crappy.

The Beets are actually my least favorite Captured Tracks band! I really like the Dignan Porch LP they did...Fresh and Onlys are great too. Bitters 12" from awhile back is totally worth every penny too. They're very hit or miss though...

The Beets LP was only just OK. This is what I rate as the best stuff so far:

Tim Cohen - Laugh Tracks LP
Wild Nothing - Gemini LP
Beach Fossils - s/t LP
The Fresh & Onlys - August In My Mind 12"
Thee Oh Sees - Dog Poison 12"

doesn't seem like this type of music benefits tremendously from being on vinyl rather than, say, a disc.

i think of the good vinyl stuff as being 70s funk or lush disco or other electronic music. i don't know enough about vinyl, actually.

drunqk posting last night totally forgot about other GREAT captured tracks. fresh & onlys grey-eyed girls LP way up there, better than the beets (much less impressed with their recent 12"). and i like dog poison a lot, though again, it's a small step down from their best recent work. kid romance 7" is cool. haven't liked the bitters, german measles, brilliant colors, mayfair set, gary war, dum dum girls, silk flowers, etc. haven't, at least, liked the stuff i've heard. but there's so fucking much of it! for a label that's only existed for a year, a year and a half, dude's put out an insane amount of shit. and relative to my tastes, quality control is very low. think i just don't quite get sniper's particular 80s fascinations. liked the early blank dogs stuff well enough, but quickly lost interest in keeping up with the onslaught of half-assed material.

didn't know tim cohen has a new LP out. looking fwd to that, as the two sides of tim cohen was one of my favorites of 2009. still bummed that it was received so harshly in certain circles. deserves to be heard by a lot more people.
