On a Siltbreeze tip, I finally bought the Sic Alps US EZ LP after seeing a copy in an actual real-world non-internet shop. Had already ordered direct from Siltbreeze ages ago, but it'd been over month or so without confirmation, so I guessed it wasn't coming and went ahead and bought it. And then the mail copy arrived. So I now have a spare. But hey..... thaaaaat's life!

yo ian did that US girls get repressed? i got the runaround from siltbreeze on that, and then i really wanted my der TPK so i just jettisoned the US girls record from the order. i still want it!

also, on first listen, the der TPK LP is about 70% as good as the first.

New DTPK is only about 30% as good as the first, and I'm only counting the parts where vocalist is not intoning. Intoning parts about 3% as good, give or take 3%.

I also got the new Comet Gain 7" and a couple of Liechtenstein 7"s at the Comet Gain/Liechtenstein/Pains Of Being Pure At Heart gig also just before Xmas. I'd been looking for one of those Liechtenstein singles for months and never seen it anywhere including Ebay, so I was v happy to see it on the merch table for £3.

US Girlz, I dunno if it's been re-pressed. I think we still have it in stock, if you want me to mail u a copy pete. I still need to check up on a replacement propeller for you as well. Anyway, the U.S. Girls record is more song-y than Grouper/Inca Ore stuff that I've heard. There's a Bruce Springsteen cover.

disagree on the TPK, I've been liking Games for Slaves a lot better than the first one. but I heard both of em at the same time so it might just be that the higher fidelity on the new one sounds punchier and Harmful Emotions will take longer to "get." track 3 on the new one is killer.

i was uninspired at the record store today. plus, i was bored. i wanted something great, but...i did finally pick up the mississippi irma thomas thing. i didn't get the der tpk album cuz you guys scared me. and i LOVED the firstsiltbreeze thing. got some miles davis records, python lee jackson album, lonnie liston smith, deodato....um, some classical stuff. some stockhausen. kinda curious about the western mass psych comp with the byron coley linernotes, but didn't know if i really wanted to spend my credit on that. i mean i was thisclose to buying fennesz vinyl, that's how uninspired i was.

i mean i almost bought a CD!!! that's how uninspired i was. kinda want that 7 cd fat possum blues thing with all the old timers on it. i'll bet that's got some cool shit on it. plus, for 7 CDs it's fairly cheap.

is it rounder who put out all the weird ravaged versions of lps on cds? like freedom highway by the staples or avalon blues by mississippi john hurt, but without any of the original tracks? i guess i know their name from then and now.

I have no clue.. I don't think I've ever owned a Rounder CD. Yazoo's CDs are great, and so are County's--usually more tracks than the LPs plus great notes extra stuff.

yesss I scored some Peruvian vinyl (5 LPs) at the crazy flea market here in Cusco. More details later, but one is a "Super Disco Salsa" cash-in thing from the 70's with sides that are one long mix, one is a "Best Of Criollos" type thing, and three are records by groups. No rare psych like El Polen, unfortunately. I'll have more chances to look. Some Peruvian dude carrying another LP asked me if I was selling them! So there are other vinyl hounds out there in these parts.

as a vinyl thread aside, i found a rare iron and wine 7" stuck in a david bowie sleeve this morning, thought lost since 2002. i wanted to sell it so bad for the past three years, but figured i had lost it at my college radio station. shows how much i listen to my warped copy of aladdin sane (and iron and wine)!

Looking at it, that's about right:

There's Brand New (unplayed), there's Mint (which often means 'played once, shows no signs of wear), there's 'Excellent' which is 'a slight amount of wear, nothing drastic.

The "VG" is about right: Adding plusses is somewhat meaningless.

Hey, Ian (and DMR), I LOVE the new The Rebel. It's like "The Rebel plays Country Teasers Greatest Hits Live" or something (it was recorded at WFMU, was it a broadcast? Its mostly Teasers songs, too, I think but I'm not super-knowledgeable of their whole back catalogue)Maybe I should have gotten the Children's Hospital, too, I don't remember seeing it at Goner, though.

i won two more delmore brothers LPs on ebay--part of the series on Old Homestead. I think it's radio broadcasts, but tbh I'm not sure. in any event i don't think there's much duplication with the LPs on county. also i got a really nice UK press of pharaoh sanders first album on ESP/Fontana. i lost the mountain bus LP though. any chicago hounds find it in a thrift store or dollar bin, buy for me! grateful dead-esque private psych on the Good label.

mountain bus one of those records that used to sell for a zillion dollars and now, you know, is more affordable. one of the benefits of ebay, really.

i just bought the first tempest album on ebay for $1.75. it used to go for a lot more. now apparently it is worth less than two dollars. it's a cool record too!

i like the first album better. i like that mix of lunkheaded hard rock and prog/psych. i like the second album too though. it definitely has its moments. no holdsworth pyrotechnics though.

i should clarify: BOTH albums are pretty pricey if you are talking about U.K. copies. the one i bought is just a u.s. promo. probably most of the u.s. copies for sale are promos or sealed cut-outs. sold like five copies here.

Got a whole bunch of 45s this weekend (plus a metal box to tote 'em in!). I'll try to list the highlights soon. One of the more interesting ones is a 70s (presumably Chilton-less) Box Tops single on Stax.

meanwhile last Saturday I went out to Long Beach to investigate some guy's Craigslist ad offering a selection of 80,000+ records for sale (not counting the 45s). didn't get murdered or anything (despite the cross street being "Hidden Lane") and yep, 80k records, all being sold between 75 cents and 3 bucks; my buddy spent $40 on something on like 30 records, including 1st pressing monos of the first three Byrds albums. apparently the guy bought out a record store up in San Francisco and hauled it back; now he's buying 200+ records a week in an effort to make the place run like an actual store despite being operated out of the back of his house.

I took a few pictures which I'll upload later. 80000 records looks exactly what you'd expect them to look like. it was fucking nuts.

an emusic interview with the label's founder got me sampling some of their (digitally-available) stuff. i like it! well, some of it, at least, especially the 80s-homages, e.g., the soft moon's breathe the fire.

dunno about soft moon, but as far as i can tell, the beets is still one of the only good records on captured tracks imho

picked up 3LP A-frames 333 comp today, listening now. so awesome to hear "new" shit from these guys. some of the c. 2007 demos (from aborted 4th lp?) up there with their best. really like the rough, spare feel overall.

i mean rough & spare compared to other a-frames, tho that's a game of inches

really? i'm kinda digging a number of this label's titles (at least the :30 samples), e.g., veronica falls; minks; wild nothings; cosmetics; and beach fossils. basically all stuff that taps into a certain 80s memory bank for me (i am old).

upon further investigation, tho, a lot of the other titles are between unmemorable and crappy.

The Beets are actually my least favorite Captured Tracks band! I really like the Dignan Porch LP they did...Fresh and Onlys are great too. Bitters 12" from awhile back is totally worth every penny too. They're very hit or miss though...

drunqk posting last night totally forgot about other GREAT captured tracks. fresh & onlys grey-eyed girls LP way up there, better than the beets (much less impressed with their recent 12"). and i like dog poison a lot, though again, it's a small step down from their best recent work. kid romance 7" is cool. haven't liked the bitters, german measles, brilliant colors, mayfair set, gary war, dum dum girls, silk flowers, etc. haven't, at least, liked the stuff i've heard. but there's so fucking much of it! for a label that's only existed for a year, a year and a half, dude's put out an insane amount of shit. and relative to my tastes, quality control is very low. think i just don't quite get sniper's particular 80s fascinations. liked the early blank dogs stuff well enough, but quickly lost interest in keeping up with the onslaught of half-assed material.

didn't know tim cohen has a new LP out. looking fwd to that, as the two sides of tim cohen was one of my favorites of 2009. still bummed that it was received so harshly in certain circles. deserves to be heard by a lot more people.
