this might actually be my 2nd fave episode so far this season, after the multiple timelines ep. pierce's dad was so weird and creepy and kind of looked like the dean

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

I could not stop lolling at the ivory hair. I read about it on the A/V Club but erroneously thought they just meant the color and that that was what was making it photograph so strangely.

dense macabre (DJP), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

The ivory hair was genius, as was his spiel about the Swedes.

Man is there still no John Oliver? Series has been great so far but his character is one of my favourites outside the study group.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

Seriously though - throwing in a bunch of fake-sounding details is a perfect way to make people think you're crazy!

I got even geekier and flashed back to that issue of ALL-STAR SUPERMAN where Luther ended his interview with Clark with a baboon wearing a Superman outfit and claimed to have singlehandedly destroyed the credibility of the Daily Planet.

I saw one episode of this - the Call of Duty one - and holy fuck it was turgid rubbish. Is this a show that only americans get?

Darren Huckerby (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

i guess so, because they don't have scenes with the characters chasing half-naked women around in doubletime to "yakety sax"

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

the Call of Duty one?

Mordy, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

I'm guessing it's the one with Abed & Troy's new friend that they didn't want Britta to date. The "hit me with your genie bottle" / "my next door neighbor is jazz musician" one.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

that's what my housemate referred to it as.

Darren Huckerby (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

britta's fake surprise about their friend stealing the kickpuncher movie was amazing. "what. no. who could of -- you don't think -- no. but it couldn't be -- but could it?"

In Britain we call them Italian Fannies.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't think Community was funny at all until I saw the first paintball episode. Every show I've seen since then has been good to amazing. (Even the pilot, which I initially hated, was a lot funnier after watching the paintball episode.)

There is a certain level of "buy-in" you have to commit to before the show will start to work, IMO.

dense macabre (DJP), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, paintball, that's the one I meant.

Darren Huckerby (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:11 (twelve years ago) link

First season's xmas episode was when I first realized the show was on a roll, though I was aware it had been getting progressively funnier/better up to that point.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:11 (twelve years ago) link

Well the paintball one and the "Call of Duty one" are wildly different episodes. I do have to say that if you thought the paintball episode was shit, you just probably aren't going to like the show.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

if you think of the paintball episode as a 'call of duty' homage that might explain any problems you have with the show

Mordy, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

Call of Duty is def turgid

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

I was basically in love with this from the episode when Pierce joins the band.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

I was down from the first episode when Annie says "we should talk to Jeff about his tardiness" & Pierce says "don't use that word around Abed" :D

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

i'm kind of glad about the lack of oliver so far- it means there is going to be a whole psych episode w/ britta and him.

yeah this is def not just an american thing, tho it is a meta thing like the best simpsons but live action. also you know we once had a thread about musicians actively enjoy what they are doing and how that makes you enjoy their music so much more? that is the sort of vibe i get from community and p&r

a hoy hoy, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

Thats pretty otm re: the vibe of those shows. I also think thats what is missing from The Office now as well. Back in the peaks of seasons 2 and 3 I got that vibe, but its long gone from that show.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

Oliver only usually turns up in half a season anyway, so it's likely we just won't see him at all til after Christmas.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

OTM a hoy hoy seconded.

I ignored this show until the first Christmas episode. They had me at "Say the whole word!" "...Jewey?"

In fairness, the patinball episode is called "Modern Warfare"

true, i had forgotten about that

Mordy, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

there's just nothing that screams CoD about that ep to me. make more sense to call it that Warriors ep of Community

Things that made me lol for too long this episode:
Room temp room
Astronaut paninis
IVORY HAIR

This was probably the first episode of the season that I loved immediately and without reservation. I mentioned last week that I tend to compare the non-concept episodes to nude pool from S1, and I definitely think this was in the same vein.

And the John Goodman payoff was amazing! His expression + disbelieving "No!" when Troy tried to turn his argument around on him was brilliant.

warning: simulated vampire fellatio (reddening), Friday, 4 November 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

I loved Troy and Abed's impressions of each other as well, there were so many great moments in this episode.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Friday, 4 November 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

The thing I loved about this episode is that I couldn't tell a direct influence of anything and that it seemed so meta that it was just Community down Community's rabbit hole, as opposed to being down 2001's or Die Hard's or whatevers rabbit hole.

Like geuine WTF at the ivory hair. No other show could pull that off as 'normal' as Community did, ever, in the history of tv shows.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 4 November 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i enjoy the parody when it's less specific. like troy's whole plot line was obviously parodic but it was making fun of such a huge trope (the hidden gift that can be used for good or evil) that it wasn't pointing at just one thing.

I wonder if we're going to see Evil Vice Dean try and tempt the study group one by one to the dark side. Also can't work out if there's a conspiracy or if he just loves good air conditioning.

Think what was missed out of yesterday's Inspector Spacetime discussion is that Troy and Abed talking in prissy British accents and throwing paper balls at Jeff is straight-up hilarious.

Matt DC, Saturday, 5 November 2011 08:44 (twelve years ago) link

Also I loved the "hey, one of us" look the gay dude gave Jeff right at the start.

what a great episode. britta this season has been amazing. i'm going to start calling it the edible complex.
