ABC's hangout comedy Happy Endings, starring Coupe, Cuthbert, Casey, and Wayans the Younger

The Coupe/Wayans double act is probably my favourite thing about this show.

They are all hilarious, but Coupe and Wayans are all-stars.

Dave with the steak truck is really the weakest link in the show, imo. He's the David Schwimmer.

i don't know where else to put this but i had a really weird dream last night that i was chatting with damon wayans and explaining that i think my wife and kids was unfairly reviled and is due for a critical reevaluation.

"hangout comedy" -- is this a genre specialized in by people who can't write plots?

it's got about as much of what passes for plot in most other sitcoms, it's just more in the Seinfeld/Friends tradition of a bunch of friends hanging out in apartments and diners or whatever rather than being about a workplace or a household

Seinfeld often had intricate farcical plots that were classically structured, just with shorter scenes.

'hangout comedy' vs 'workplace comedy' or 'family comedy'

also i told him that 'claire's boyfriend stories' were a total waste of the show but junior was a comic genius.

nb i haven't seen this show in years and i certainly don't think any of it was funny and i don't remember a single claire boyfriend story.

i really love the direction they decided to go with elisha c's character btw - so many killer lines this episode but 'i thought it was the european spelling' was a++++

otm, she is so much funnier than at the beginning of the season

when she scratched her forehead with a chicken foot I just about died

i've only seen some of these (weird hulu embargo/backlog), but the faces they make are so weird and unreal.

still, i laughed.

the whole show is weird and unreal. that's why it took me so long to decide if i liked it; i had to get used to the artificiality and rhythms of the patter. but my verdict is it's awesome.

Yeah the slang and facial expressions are so far removed from anything actual real live people do that it makes Friends seem like a documentary by comparison, but its still consistently funny. The racist parrot was hilarious.

the somewhat scary thing is that, for all of the weirdness and unreality, I feel like this show captures the essence of my interactions with IRL friends more than any other show on television

Were Jane and Alex sisters at the beginning, or is it just a plot device they added later?

the weirdness and unreality are all surface. the relationships are realistic.

The "rotary dial" joke killed me dead for a good couple minutes.

it was amusing, def a step down from Happy Endings, but i remember liking it well enough
