some people were discussing this on a panel show last night. one guy said "lou reed swings. metallica dont."

just listened at a friend's house on a good stereo

i really like most of CD 1...dragon is definitely the worst song

but yeah parts of this are really fucking striking and bizarre music

the end of junior dad is no shit some of the best music released this year IMO...

Unfortunately I wasn't near a real record store today, so I swung by a chain store to pick up this and Megadeth. Was also hoping to get Smile, but fucking B3st Buy isn't even stocking it in-store.

The p4k reviewer doesnt seem acquainted with what Lou Reed is supposed to sound like when at his best post Transformer (Coney Island, Blue Mask, New York, Magic and Loss, Ecstacy) his only reference is Street Hassle (which is an amazing song but imo not a good album and appeared on PF500 as well) so i'm not sure he really likes lou reed solo and it's not surprising that he wouldn't like lulu. It sounds exactly like Lou Reed playing with Metallica and the 1.0 is just ridiculous.

Popmatters gave it a 1 too...

Drowned in Sound made the review a homage to Lester Bangs review of Metal Machine Music, which probably means they don't completely hate the record..?

Seems like a lot of reviewers are missing the point. This is an unqualified great record, definitely emblematic of Music in the Year 2011.

i think niels is right about most people not really being acquainted with lou's solo career. the 70s, sure, maybe touchstones like new york or drella later, but otherwise, lou's output for the past 25 years or so isn't much listened to. feel like in order to deal with lulu, you should be at least aware of his (admittedly pretty flawed) later period stuff. lulu didn't come out of nowhere -- he was doing this kind of really unpleasant, twisted/sexual lyrical thing all the way back to "like a possum" and "rock minuet". not that he didn't deal with that type of thing before, but it seems to me those songs are the beginning of what he's doing now...

I think also he's upped the performance art quotient significantly over time, and Lulu should be understood as fitting into that vein of work.

Looking forward to Hetfield's tai chi demonstrations when they play live...

Nico would be a fine voice for Lulu.

Guessing that when Reed wrote the lyrics for Robert Wilson, he meant for a gal to sing them.

I used to live a couple blocks from Malanga. He was heavy and walking with a cane. No more whip dancing for him. Time's a bitch.

really like the allmusic review, seems like the first one that really tries to honestly engage w/lulu (at the same time not ignoring it's flaws)

this is probably the closest to my feelings on the record (though i kinda find hetfield loveable)

It was strange listening to actual thing last night after all the speculating and pre-tributing. Allmusic review ia def closest to my feelings about right now, though I think I like more? I don't know, man it is some weird thing.

I don't really like Lou Reed or his voice in particular, but this guy from Roadrunner Records saying that "Lou Reed never had a good voice" is just unreal.

Reed's singing was great until the '80s.

OTOH this Phil guy is claiming that the Judgment Night soundtrack holds up, which I respect.

Different experiences I suppose, but I've heard quite a few people talking about this out and about! Latest example was kids at the coffee shop this morning going on and on about it. Plus I've seen tons of my facebook friends that are usually those "ten album a year" folks going on and on about this.

It's been kinda neat hearing about Lou Reed from people I know who don't spend a lot of time thinking about Lou Reed

If I wasn't such a VU stan, I'd almost envy people who know him as the "Walk On The Wild Side" guy revered by nerds, who shows up every once in a while on TV singly horribly amid a cast of weirdos.
