"But Gary has not sold 'em, has not tried to sell 'em, not tried to show them in public or anything like that. It were for his own gratification. "Whether it was right or wrong is, of course, it's up to him as a person. But they didn't do anything wrong but they are then demonised."
"If you said to that copper, what's Gary Glitter done wrong? Well nothing really. He's just sat at home watching dodgy films."

On the other hand, I don't think these allegations are much of a shock to anyone are they? I mean it *is* shocking that these things are said to have happened how and where they did, but all the same, I don't think anyone would underestimate the man's creepiness.

Good piece by Suzanne Moore on the whole mess surrounding Savile and seventies guys' idea of "fun": http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/oct/03/liking-young-girls-not-preference-perversion

Jesus Christ. No longer sure if this guy was real or if David Peace made him up.

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 09:07 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry, that's crass.

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 09:08 (eleven years ago) link

Also funny, true

Bananaman Begins, Thursday, 4 October 2012 09:14 (eleven years ago) link

The whole of seventies Britain is now beginning to look like David Peace made it up!

Well my phrasing was clumsy at least - he was obviously a very real and dangerous guy.

Anyhow, some of the fallout:

I was a bit surprised at all this because I'd heard that necrophilia rumour for so long - a bit jarring to put him into a different (& more real, hurtful) category of foulness.

woof, Thursday, 4 October 2012 10:31 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, how long ago was that Irvine Welsh story? 1994? 1995?

There's also this Have I Got News For You 'outtake', which I always assumed was fake:

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:15 (eleven years ago) link

would be an excellent fake if so

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:20 (eleven years ago) link

Private Eye is going to have an absolute fucking field day with all this by the way.

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:32 (eleven years ago) link

That transcript is fucking great...shame that HIGNFY is a bit wank these days.

Blue Collar Retail Assistant (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:47 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I just remembered that HIGN thing, it's from like 2001 but iirc was pretty swiftly debunked at the time

is it pedantic to wish Sun readers knew the difference between paedophiles and ephebophiles?

vegetarian beef (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:08 (eleven years ago) link

By their own standards, the Sun was for many years the UK's biggest publisher of paedophile porn.

Not all that funny, but you do have to admire the speed people work at these days.

xpost true tale..

back whenever, they did a page 3 series for girls *on* their 16th birthday.

Until someone pointed out that all of their models must have done their sessions before they were 'legal' then.

They shut the series immediately.

Janet Street-Porter has said publicly that they all knew about it in 1987 when she started at the BBC but she was too junior to do anything about it.

Krishnan Guru-Murphy has just dropped her in it by pointing out she was commissioning editor for youth programming, so not exactly junior and in fact gave him his first job at the Beeb in 1987 hosting a teenage discussion panel. The guest? Jingle Jangle Jewellery Jim himself.

A girl I used to go out with was a nurse at one of the hospitals Jimbo volunteered at, she said he was creepy creepy creepy, none of the nurses ever wanted to be left alone in the same room as him

Hello, Good Evening and Expenses (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, I remembered this quote when relating it to my wife a couple days ago. Forgot who said it though.

Did anyone see the story that was in 'times 'weekend? The original story had people signified by initials: JS, G and F.

JS has now been identified as JimSav, G = Gltter, F has not been named for "legal reasons"

Could that only be because F is still alive? If not.. I think I have a good idea .. and that's all I'm saying I guess...

Mark G, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

F is freddie starr, he tried to take out an injunction, it was overturned, he's been in meltdown denying it ever since.
