i pretty much agree with ronan. i don't seek it out, but it's undeniably effective (especially when gaslamp killer drops it in the middle of a mix). the kids could do worse, even if they don't care much about the kind of electronic music i like.

btw seeing this video of some (pretty skilled) orange county bros covering skrillex made me realize that he hides some real melodies in there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuunY8BTqNs

this is unusual for batman. (Jordan), Friday, 28 October 2011 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah there's a lot of predictable copycat lame rubbish out there, but it doesn't really apply to an artist like skrillex, who really has got some splendid ideas in there. Don't see how it's any more predictable than any other genre. Reminds me of when all my metAl pals at school would tease me for liking rave because 'it's all just boom boom boom' and then later when I came round to metal, people would say it all goes 'dun dun durrrrr' or that it's 'just angry shouting' or when people say indie is just 'lame sings about cardigans'. Come on, if you want music that changes and excites, a bit of brostep does the trick.

btw what the hell is the bassist doing in that skrillex cover video?

The Reverend, Friday, 28 October 2011 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

i finally "got" skrillex when i realized he was in a screamo band (from first to last): a lot of his songs are really just screamo songs with electronic music sounds and wobble bass instead of chuggachugga guitar

The Reverend, Saturday, 29 October 2011 02:25 (twelve years ago) link

Quite a lot of highly predictable italo, techno and rave has now been upgraded to classic status by the 40/50y old generation, so all is not lost dog latin...

yeah I reviewed a compilation of stuff on [impt brostep label] Circus Records a few months back and put something at the end like "expect to see a critical rehabilitation of this stuff in about 2023"

Most of which he predictably copycatted off Reso and Lone Wolf off Bloodied Blade fame.

you want fries with that (flame grilled meat), Saturday, 29 October 2011 10:56 (twelve years ago) link

the from first to last thing doesn't give the skrillah a pass, even they were pretty derivative mall screamo in that hawthore heights / everytime i die / thursday etc camp, he doesn't need to go back to the band thing unless it involved dubstep guitar and willing himself out of existence

fauxmarc, Saturday, 29 October 2011 11:40 (twelve years ago) link

hah watching that cover performed live made me connect more with dubstep #rockist

I was kinda thinking that when you are reading sci fi dystopian novels and they talk about punks and cyberpunk and w/e you kind of picture these guitars with computers in them and that's what the guys in that video have, a fucking wireless thumbring that wobbles the bass and the azn guy's got a pda ducttaped next to the knobs and it's all gated digital clipped shards

B&B is still kinda before my time, but i'm shocked that this didn't even get like 10% of the overzealous internet reaction as arrested development

Sure it's a racket. Sure there's a lot of screeching and grinding and not a lot of sub. Sure Sonny Moore looks like a Vril-Ya crossed with Trent Reznor, but frogbs thing about it demanding your attention with fUCK YEaH vibes - what is wrong with that? Isn't that the point?

There's nothing wrong with that if its what you choose to listen to. I really like Guitar Wolf and Squarepusher but I wouldn't play it at a party.

frogbs, Monday, 31 October 2011 13:15 (twelve years ago) link

Would you play Kode9 at a party?
