Easiest mash-up in the world: "Piece of Me" and "Word Up".

Such a sucker for these things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixlHxS3ZpZM

akm: I wouldn't say "critical acclaim", rather mixed reviews: http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/spearsbritney/blackout

Surely the best album of Britney, but it's mainly because of their previous ones were shite. This is just half-shit.

zeus, Sunday, 30 December 2007 13:19 (sixteen years ago) link

the same kind of insistent, almost monotone that [justin timberlake] uses

it's like halfway to rapping (at least) - so cool how her voice is literally played on a synth despite how many times this has been done - shades of "j-j-jam it on the one" as if theo was hanging out in booka shade's studio instead of stevie wonder's

I don't really like Hot As Ice all that much, but there's pretty much no song on this that you could say is less than good. About 50% is brilliant and 40% is incredible

I know, right?, Sunday, 30 December 2007 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

definitely not half-shite, if you appreciate pop music.

Surmounter, Sunday, 30 December 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

"Hot as Ice" sounds like it could fit on Felix da Housecat's Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever.

jaymc, Sunday, 30 December 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, seriously, this album is like the definition of unfuckwithable

Tape Store, Sunday, 30 December 2007 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I do appreciate good pop music...
But this is just half good. Sorry about that, Brit.

zeus, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

That Turtles song "Ooh Baby Baby" or whatever it's called is garbage, and "Why Should I Be Sad" is kind of blah, but otherwise yeah this album is wicked. The three-song stretch "Get Naked (I Got A Plan)"/ "Freakshow" / "Toy Soldier" is *LEGENDARY*.

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

How do the Turtles get here?

zeus, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

it samples/interpolates some Turtles song...

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

"happy together"

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Strange, but I can't hear The Turtles there... but the song is really shit, you're right.

zeus, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't understand why they didn't put "Kiss U All Over" on the album, it's one of the best songs from the Blackout-sessions.

theres some good songs on the new album but id like to hear songs like why am i so sad sung by someone else.

titchyschneiderMk2, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 11:39 (sixteen years ago) link

"Radar" and "Piece of Me" are masterpieces. Then there's about five or six lesser ones. Her best album.

three weeks pass...

You are forgetting Break the Ice, from the moment you really hear it, it sounds amazing!

I know, right?, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

yes.

putting it on

Surmounter, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

"why should I be sad" is so nice and sad. great one to end the album after all the synths and freaky beats...

AleXTC, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently she is supposed to be dead within the next half-year. So I guess this is her swansong album then....

PERFECT LOVER

Surmounter, Thursday, 24 January 2008 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't rly know that there's a bad song on here? i'm not HUGE on Get Naked but everything else sounds great to me.

Surmounter, Friday, 25 January 2008 14:59 (sixteen years ago) link

get naked (i has a plan)

Tracer Hand, Friday, 25 January 2008 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

"Heaven on Earth" gets better and better, and it was already my favorite song.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 25 January 2008 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

If it's her last album, it's a great one to leave with (and "be sad" would be a good final).
the rest of the album is really amazing, indeed. for me, with no order in particular, the best would be : gimme, naked, break the ice, heaven, sad, ice... almost all the album actually ! (and it's such a joy to listen to with good earphones).
any idea what the next single will be ?

Britney to Make 'Purr-fect' Album

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Troubled popstar Britney Spears today announced plans for a new album entitled "Epic Fail." Spears further said that all lyrics for the album will be written in something she referred to as "loll-cat."

"I has producers. I has artistic vision," Spears said at a press conference. "Nom nom nom nom nom."

At times, Spears seemed agitated, yelling for no discernable reason. "I IS SINEAD CAT," she said. "WHERE IS MONORAIL BABY?"

At other times, however, she was playful, pointing at a photographer and saying, "Invisible ethics."

The press conference finished as confusingly as it began, with Spears asking, "My bucket--has you seen it?"

Representatives at her label had no immediate comment.

this has already dropped to a mere fiver in your local Woolies.
i'm still getting into it to be honest.

me too

i'm at that stage where it's all i wanna put on

Surmounter, Friday, 25 January 2008 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I seriously can't listen to anything else anymore, not since Tusk has an album so thoroughly ruined the rest of my listening.

I think I actually broke my (admittedly refurbished) mp3 player by playing this album exclusively while commuting 3hrs+ a day on the bus for two months straight. Now I have no music. Now I am depressed.

Finefinemusic, Friday, 25 January 2008 21:08 (sixteen years ago) link

What is so great about Tusk? I have a 2CD Fleetwood Mac greatest hits, and I like a handful of songs, but I'm a little baffled whenever I hear people speak so reverentially of that album in particular. Is it that different from, say, Rumours (most of which is on the greatest hits)? All I know is that they use marching bands on it.

jaymc, Friday, 25 January 2008 21:18 (sixteen years ago) link

there was a marching band only on the title track. the rest of the album is just very good songwriting, with a particular weird sheen to it all...so where Rumors is good and solid pop songwriting, Tusk is good and solid WEIRD pop songwriting

akm, Friday, 25 January 2008 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Cool, maybe I will check it out.

jaymc, Friday, 25 January 2008 21:26 (sixteen years ago) link

If you've only heard the three singles on the comp, jaymc, you haven't heard Tusk; it's much weirder.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 25 January 2008 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I think there are five songs on the comp: "Tusk," "Think About Me," "Storms," "Sisters of the Moon," and "Sara." I just listened to all of them, and they're all pretty good, but "Sara" is especially sweet.

jaymc, Friday, 25 January 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

"Sara" is my favorite Nicks song ever, and indicative of how the album sounds.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 25 January 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Awesome. My favorite Nicks song is "Dreams," and I think "Sara" has some sonic similarities -- the hazy, languid quality of her vocals meshing with those crisp drums is key.

jaymc, Friday, 25 January 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

yea i need to check this album out too. (Tusk)

Surmounter, Friday, 25 January 2008 22:59 (sixteen years ago) link

so Break The Ice is happening for me now.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldnt say that Tusk sounds that much like "Sara". If I had to choose a representative sample, I'd probably go for "Think about Me".

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 14:49 (sixteen years ago) link

The 90s techno synth on Break the ice is so great (the beat and melody/singing too). You want to hear the track blast in a rave in some suburban boarded up factory !

AleXTC, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:10 (sixteen years ago) link

absofuckinlutely

Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

FAR ! (fancy a rave)

AleXTC, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I learned to love Rumours when I was around seven and I bought Tusk about a year ago, so that's why I said Tusk. Also, they're both batshit brilliant pop albums where the dislocated fragmented nature finds an almost conceptual base in the Britney and Lindsey chaotic lives of the artists.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link

On my Radar is kind of a crowd pleaser, it's funny. i mean i think it's great and all but it was definitely a bit of a grower for me.
