Never thought of Black Sabbath as one of these. Liking them almost seems to have nothing to do with taste. Like have you heard Black Sabbath. I mean duh. You like Black Sabbath.

Dave Matthews Band
Coldplay
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Neil Diamond
Rage Against the Machine
Barenaked Ladies
The Residents

Don't much like any of the above, but they're all adept at what they do and beloved by millions (or , in the case of The Residents, an enthusiastic several), so it seems churlish to deny their quality. I associate them with musical tastes that are not mine.

And also: Guided By Voices

A lot of bands that fall into this category have been re-evaluated. I remember the moment when I realized that I actually loved Phil Collins and everybody around me realized they felt the same way.

ok this one just makes me think of all the dudes that i was in jazz band with in lol HS and how they all looked up to and aspired to be like turtle-necked or tie-and-shirt-same-color pasty white jazz d-bags when they grew up

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

"iron maiden. swans."

swans fans have great taste! i was on a swans e-mail list for years and the people there were really well-rounded and very curious listeners. yeah, a bunch of them liked mogwai and godspeed too much, but lots of people did back then.

and maiden fans just like lots of metal! they are the salt of the earth, for real.

if you had said metallica and nine inch nails, i would have gone along with that. (metallica being a once good band)

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

(and nine inch nails being a once listenable band, i guess...)

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link

wait, that other thread gave me a good idea:

DEAD CAN DANCE

(i love dcd, but i am totally scared of their newage wikkawikka fan-base in the states)

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah but the people who like Metallica when they were good generally have good taste in music.

No comment on Nine Inch Nails.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Newage wikkawikka fan-base is actually pretty harmless. More pertinent to this discussion is that those DCD influenced darkwave bands (Projekt's marketing term, not mine). A few, like Sopor Aeternus and Elend have put out some good records, but there's a huge amount of abysmal out-of-tune goth girl w/ one-synth boyfriend material that files under this rubric.

FWIW, I proudly rep for Petty. But I also know that every '89 white Dodge Caravan with faux-wood paneling came pre-equipped with a copy of Full Moon Fever.
