LOL wtf @ "choking game"http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/teen-dies-playing-choking-game-20111027-1mkwj.html
Is it too gauche to call it "erotic auto-asphyxiation" when it involves teenagers, or something?
― Trayce, Thursday, 27 October 2011 00:17 (twelve years ago) link
i think this is more "lack of access to drugs auto-asphyxiation"
― ffs sorrow (electricsound), Thursday, 27 October 2011 00:19 (twelve years ago) link
see, if they had pokies they could afford drugs and wouldn't need to auto-asphyxiate

hey, do people who are aware of Marieke Hardy dislike her? Because I know fuck-all about her, but was persuaded to read her new book by a friend, and both it and she are really, really awful

I'm ambivalent. She isnt offensive, she's dreadfully twee tho and lays the nostalgia on a bit thick a'times.
― Trayce, Thursday, 27 October 2011 02:25 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, she just exists in a self-conscious bubble of twee and swearing

I'm in this weird place now where the only books I ever take anywhere with me are text books. Everything else is an ebook or I just don't get around to reading it.
― Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link
I found myself tempted with the idea of a kindle t'other day. Only ive heard the prices of kindlebookx on amazon isnt any cheaper than real books?
― Trayce, Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link
Depends on the book. I bought the Jobs bio ebook for $9.80 off Amazon; paper version is $12 posted from bookdepository.com and $45 at a Dymocks shop. Then you have ebooks that are easily 40% more expensive than the best paperback price, and some books aren't even (officially) available as ebooks.
otoh there are loads and loads of really good authors who publish ebooks exclusively, usually at somewhere around US$5.
I was sold when we went away in June, I chucked about 12 books into my suitcase and ended up reading the Kindle all week because it was easier to hold. You wouldn't think tech could do books better than books, but there you go.

One thing I've found is that with access to a uni library (I rejoined my old one for $50 a year) you can get access to heaps and heaps of magazines free in electronic form, download them as PDFs or HTML, convert to ebook form with Calibre. It's how I read the QE, for example.

Most ppl I see are kind of against the union action, tho? I'm in 2 minds.

When Speaker Harry Jenkins told him to return to the motion's subject matter, Mr Pyne complained of government interjections.
Mr Jenkins told him not to be a "precious petal".
