We have kids and therefore we are perpetually spending our money on stupid stuff like food and clothing for them and orthodontia and stuff.

But hey, I can check!

the album came out in 1993 tho

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Monday, 24 October 2011 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

Okay, well, then we have no excuse other than we were all falling on love then and stuff like music was totally irrelevant to our lives. We probably didn't even think WE needed food then!

Sara R-C, Monday, 24 October 2011 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

Gah, I'm old and cranky now.

Sara R-C, Monday, 24 October 2011 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

ha, we went to a concert of one of the groups I sang in as an undergrad this past Friday and came to the shocking, startling realization that there were kids on the stage younger than J's and my relationship

later we spent some time drinking beer with the president of the group, who would have been about 3 when J and I started dating

I keep running into resident MDs and realizing they are DOCTORS and that they were born after Reagan was out of office. It's terrifying.

(Also why do they let men who don't look like they need to shave yet become MDs? It is JUST WRONG!!!)

Sara R-C, Monday, 24 October 2011 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

23 is kind of precocious for a resident, isn't it?

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Monday, 24 October 2011 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I thought so, too, but I ran into one last week. He was also wearing a bow tie. I was confused.

Sara R-C, Monday, 24 October 2011 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

I resisted Doogie Howser jokes, mainly because I feared he was way too young to understand the reference.

I am rediscovering my goth side in honor of Halloween and am currently basking in The March Violets, who I really should have been up on YEARS ago:

I have never heard of The March Violets, so I'm still further behind than you, deX.

Not that there is anything surprising in that revelation.

Sara R-C, Monday, 31 October 2011 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

go on...

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:10 (twelve years ago) link

oh nothing much tbh, mostly a lot of feeling like we were in that scene in a bad movie where the out of towners step into the local joint and all the patrons eye them with mild suspicion. the b3irstub3 was 100% empty except for the bartender and my friend bought him shots. the night began with "wahoo we're drunk let's hit the town" and then very quickly settled into mild disappointment.

arby's, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

we just watched "The Mist"

wau

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:37 (twelve years ago) link

bumblebee zombie = kind of brilliant sounding; bierstube = oh my, so HSTNGS (although not always in a bad way!)

deX- I am terrified to see that movie. How scary is it? Every time I re-read that story my hands sweat. And I know exactly what is going to happen.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

We decided to watch the original 1958 version of _The Blob_, which terrified me as a child (and which I was still having nightmares about when I was in 11th grade... no joke). Guess what? It's about the least scary movie ever.

Well except the fact that Steve McQueen was supposed to be a teenage heartthrob despite the fact that he looks about 45 years old in the film.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

There are some strong squirm moments in the middle but it's surprisingly not as gory as I expected it to be (tho there is still gore, don't get me wrong).

The ending is brutal tho

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

That story hits my fear buttons so damn hard - giant bugs/dinosaurs/spiders, things eating people alive, and a child in danger. It's scientifically designed to freak me the hell out.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

Not sure I'm ever going to be able to watch it. Which is sort of sad, because it's one of my favorite SK stories!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

ok am i now bummed that le blob is not on instant. tbh empty b3irstub3 was probably the best bar of the night bcz 1)drunkest, and 2)we talked to the bartender abt m4nk4to for a time. actually the best part was 3) KG checking her phone to see nine missed calls from her sister who had just rolled into town from chicago. she felt pretty bad, i lolled.

arby's, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

If you have Amazon Prime you can watch _The Blob_ on instant there for free. It's not good, but it is a classic in its way... and it offers a lot of unintended lolz. (There's a line about wasting "my 80 cents" to see a movie, for instance...).

Sounds like you had fun of a sort in HSTNGS anyway...???

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:19 (twelve years ago) link

oh, yeah. we were pretty happy just to have ppl visiting, really. we downed a few bottles of wine before heading out so some uncomfortable stares from ppl who appeared to be having zero fun didn't impact our momentum too badly. just an oddly listless friday night crowd.

arby's, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

Ah, HSTNGS... zero fun for all! Okay, for many. Glad you had some yourselves anyway. :)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:52 (twelve years ago) link

We put our new land line phone on speaker so we could sing happy birthday to J's grandmother. We then couldn't figure out how to take it off of speaker, which led me to overhear a mammogram conversation where J's g complained about how much she hates them because of her dense tit flesh.

Ah, technology.

Well, that is... entertaining.

Now *really* looking forward to being 40 next year. I'm sure I will go to my first mammogram with the phrase "dense tit flesh" circling in my mind. Thank you!

I came this close to changing my display name to "Grandmother! What dense tit flesh you have!"

Anybody alive out there?

Me: giving flu shots 24-7 it seems like... still fun! Saturday clinic (all vaccinations in the clinic, all day) is great. Except that it sounds like the Child Torture Chamber sometimes in the hallways.

Sara R-C, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

A group of folks went out to western MA yesterday for a really odd, poignant event; the father of a friend of ours from college has terminal cancer and has requested a bunch of music be sung at his impending memorial, so we went out to his house to rehearse it while he and his family watched. It was really touching and kind of a "makes you think" moment; here is a guy staring at the end of his life and he's decided to go out in a certain way, and we got to perform the music he wants sung at his service for him before he actually died. I'm still kind of emotional about it.

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Monday, 14 November 2011 17:14 (twelve years ago) link

That's lovely, actually. I'm glad you got to be part of that... as tough as it sounds in some ways.

Looking forward to listening to those and also feeling like, jeez, if I were dying would I have any notion of what funeral music to even think about...!?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

I decided years ago that I wanted the Martin Mass for Double Choir performed at my wake/funeral

first 5 tracks here:

http://open.spotify.com/album/3TAzIeZbQhi1vtNo4fCm4b

If I have to pick only one, it's the Agnus Dei:

fyi, the most beautiful moment in the piece may be the part of the "Gloria" starting around 2:58
