those were both nice breaks from the caricatures doing embarrassing things, weren't they?

ya idk i only caught up on community over the summer so none of my love for the first two seasons is documented on this thread, then again i don't see the need to explain my challenging opinion about why i think its dropping off to people who were keeling over at PIZZA PIZZA ME SO HUNGY
re: "cool:" jeff and britta used to be, like, impenetrably witty, from both within the group & with each other. i realize the softening is part of their char development but they dont even have good zings or comebacks anymore & say awkward dumb crap all the time. this has been noted previous but abed has always been cool in a nerdy way, the episode where its revealed tons of girls are into him kind of makes sense; he's detached and smart and observant. now i'm not so sure what they think he is

also: the jeff britta romance was fun and tense and hilarious! this annie thing is gross and i know thats the joke but its TOO GROSS
― flopson, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link
i will admit now isn't a good time for a jeff/britta shipper
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:18 (twelve years ago) link
fwiw I thought the Britta "HUNGY" thing wasn't funny, so flopson otm there I guess
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:19 (twelve years ago) link
Fortunately for that line, it didn't exist in a context- or setup-free vacuum.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link
Twasn't a joke, just a nice bit of ridiculousness one does a) when in the loosened atmosphere of a party and b) as a stupid bit of nonsense you do when you're stoned. It's OTM in that regard.

the shocking revelation that a disbarred, fradulent lawyer and a 30 year old who has done peace corps and foot modeling after dropping out of high school to "impress Radiohead" at a community college are prone to foolish behavior
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:23 (twelve years ago) link
xp That was my point. The criticisms against it seemed to miss the setup.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link
Chop busted, fellow adult. Chop busted.
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:33 (twelve years ago) link
Sorry guys, next time I will refer to the entire contect and setup for every joke rather than try to refer to it in shorthand. I mean, I get the setup and context, I just don't think she pulled it off in a way that made me laugh. Now, Annie doing that in a similar set-up after her first time getting stoned or something probably would have cracked me up.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:33 (twelve years ago) link
I also really appreciate the insinuation that because I didn't think a joke was funny that I didn't get the "context" or "setup". ffs u guys.

tbf you piggybacked off an incoherent challop, jon
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:35 (twelve years ago) link
tbrr, I wasn't piggybacking on any single part of it except the Britta joke I didn't like
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link
well let that be a lesson to you
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:38 (twelve years ago) link
jvc, sorry, to clarify, it was directed more at flopson's "its dropping off to people who were keeling over at PIZZA PIZZA ME SO HUNGY", as if the show was becoming some one-dimensional "but Football In The Groin had a football in the groin."
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:39 (twelve years ago) link
I gotcha. But, tbh, my comment was for a general reaction to that argument I get from people wrt to comedy about not liking a particular joke, "oh well, you just didn't get the setup". Uh, no, I did, I just didn't laugh.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 14 October 2011 17:40 (twelve years ago) link
I hear ya. However, on re-watching, I noticed that the first line of the couplet is "PIZZA PIZZA GO IN TUMMY" (not "in my tummy"), which is some next-level shit.

I think Dan Harmon's master plan is to divide the show's fan base just for laughs.

i think to some extent this episode exaggerated some of the characters traits in order to emphasize their absence during the roll of the die in which they were gone & also to examine the role they played w/in the group or w/e so it came off as p cartoonish/stupid in places but i liked it i guess im just a sucker for the general premise and i liked seeing the 'what ifs' idk jeff making all these ppl worse was kindof a brilliant way to end this episode??
― koyannisquatsi hop (Lamp), Friday, 14 October 2011 17:57 (twelve years ago) link
considering we had annie in a cage protesting a mock UN meeting two episodes ago i didn't think her doing a pizza dance after smoking pot at a party was really that cartoonish
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link
d'oh i mean Britta
Britta has always done stupid intentionally-written-to-be-unfunny shit like the pizza dance. It was sooooo in character. And LOL at how stupid that shit was. So, I don't get some of you guys, I guess?

re: "cool:" jeff and britta used to be, like, impenetrably witty
they've always been douchebags, the fact that you thought of them as "cool" maybe says more about you than it does about the show.

I loves me some Britta/Gillian Jacobs but I don't think she's anywhere NEAR as good a physical comedienne as Alison Brie. She's just game, I guess, which counts for a lot but I'm not always sold when she goes broad.

any stiffness in Britta's "physical comedy" has been pretty in character (last thing that pizza dance should have been was natural), though I'm certainly all for Alison Brie having more physical moments
― da croupier, Friday, 14 October 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link
