I mean, come on. Love the guy's products or no, but as a dude Jobs was a total inscrutable cipher. Sort of like Howard Hughes had his OCD manifested itself as Machiavellian ambition.

Apple Store Robbery Interrupted by Jobs Mourners

Best part is the police report that mentions the store's "owner passed earlier this afternoon."

According to a person familiar with the matter, Isaacson last interviewed Jobs four weeks ago, right before, and right after he stepped down from his post as the CEO of Apple.

Jobs indicated at that time that he knew he was going to die soon. The scene will appear at the end of the book.

I'm really interested to read that book because it look intrsting but also why because I wonder how much of the success was Jobs's personality vs right-place-time and context.

I mean, Jobs was exactly the same Jobs at NeXT, and made great products, but basically failed. If Apple hadn't also been failing harder and bought him to save themselves, he'd have gone under on that one.

Yet put the same guy back into Apple with basically the same vision and in under 15 years it was the world's biggest company.

He was obv a nightmare to work with, and only got away with it finally by being the boss *and* successful. I wonder what that type of guy would have been if he hadn't grown up when and where he did, perfectly positioned for the microcomputer boom.

xp He didn't have Jonathan Ive at NeXT.

polyphonic, Thursday, 6 October 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

NeXT had some gorgeous kit, all the same. The slab is lush.

Funny too how Ive needed Jobs to really get going: he'd already been at Apple for a few years and was about ready to quit when Jobs found him.

My biggest takeaway from this thread is Woz's unwavering love for American suburban chain restaurants.
