Possibly the worst shit ever made.

"It annoys me some DJs are getting paid five times as much as us when we are a proper band and they're only playing other people's records."

I forgot Carl Cox existed till this thread. Is he still big in Europe? I’d expect not ...

Mr. Goodman, Sunday, 23 September 2007 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh wow, the sheer assholery of that DJ comment...

Telephone thing, Sunday, 23 September 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, everyone knows that playing records is harder than making them, so why shouldn't DJs get paid five times more?

moley, Sunday, 23 September 2007 22:47 (sixteen years ago) link

carl cox doesn't get paid more because of what he does on stage. he gets paid more because he can draw 10 times as many people.

elan, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I caught the last few songs of his LA set last week, and didn't think it was that bad. Sort of had a 90s dance/LCD Jr. vibe to his songs. I did notice that the club was 18+, and most of the crowd did not have over 21 wristbands, which I think says a lot about his demographic.

naus, Monday, 24 September 2007 06:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, way more females than males in attendance, and most looked like they hadn't been to an indie club before. Led me to believe that he must be getting a huge MySpace/MTVU push.

naus, Monday, 24 September 2007 06:18 (sixteen years ago) link

calvin harris - scotland's disgrace pt. 48.

carl cox is STILL massive.

stirmonster, Monday, 24 September 2007 07:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Are there any mega-big name 90s DJs who aren't still massive? It's like they can go out of fashion as much as they want and still draw big crowds.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 September 2007 08:35 (sixteen years ago) link

CALVIN HARRIS AND THE MITCHELL BROTHERS TOGETHER ON ONE TRACK. THE BEST OF BRITISH DANCE MEETS THE BEST OF BRITISH URBAN. HOW CAN THEY FIT SO MUCH NON-IRRITATING TALENT ON ONE SONG? I HAVE NO IDEA.

ok

1. playing in a real band? big whup, what fucken difference does it make? I think almost anybody would rather hear a good DJ set than a shit band

2. he is a poor imitation of mylo, who is a poor imitation of Les Rythmes Digitales

3. he jumped on the electro/80s revival bandwagon at least 5 years too late

4. he is a stupid twat

a bunch of my friends are really digging this guy, but i gave the album a spin and was thoroughly unimpressed. it's getting massive college radio play. maybe some good remixes would make it more palatable.

idiot.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 10:52 (sixteen years ago) link

just read this on wikipedia about the "Acceptable in the 80s" video:

The music video features many references of the time; the stereotypical large hairstyles, bright dayglo colours and bizarrely, scientists dissecting what appears to be an otter, products of which are used by a hair stylist, TV chef, and to heal a grazed knee. The video is directed by Woof Wan-Bau.

this could be a number of things I suppose; is he saying that BACK THEN animal testing and vivisection were (more) acceptable, that there wasn't as much environmental consciousness as today? I love it that someone called Woof Wan-Bau exists.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it was more that people just hated otters in the 80s, as they were associated with the (then) embarrassing 70s (Tarka The Otter, Ring Of Bright Water etc.)

Alba, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:16 (sixteen years ago) link

(actually Ring Of Bright Water came out in 1969, but we all know the 70s began in 1968)

Alba, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:17 (sixteen years ago) link

we have some songs of his on the work ipod, one where he is singing about "electro man" is a mix of the "electro boy" song from the mighty boosh and that one belle & sebastian dance track, sung by the dude from david devant and his spirit wife. really really bad.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7328513.stm

Chart star Calvin Harris has lost seven months of work on his new album in baggage problems at Heathrow.

The dance musician, from Dumfries, in the south of Scotland, was returning to the UK from America when the bag containing his laptop went missing.

A spokeswoman for his record company confirmed it contained the only copy of work on Mr Harris' second album.

His first release - I Created Disco - was a top 10 hit and carried the debut single Acceptable in the 80s.

The album's success led to him working with the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Kylie Minogue, for whom he wrote the forthcoming single In My Arms in his bedroom on a 15-year-old computer.

A spokeswoman for Columbia Records confirmed that the lost laptop contained several new songs the DJ and musician had been working on.

"He has lost the only copy of the new album," she said.

"It is a big cause for concern - months of work have gone into that."

She said it would not affect his live performances as they did not involve the use of the laptop.

However, it could set back work on a new album for some time.

"They have offered about £750 in compensation," said the spokeswoman.

"You can't really put a price on something like a new record."

Flights cancelled

British Airways has said its priority is to reunite passengers with their luggage as soon as possible.

More than 400 volunteer staff have been working to deal with the situation.

Thousands of bags were caught in a backlog after the opening of the new T5 terminal at Heathrow this week.

Numerous flights were cancelled due to problems with the baggage handling system.

British Airways has admitted that the chaos surrounding the opening of Terminal 5 has so far cost about £16 million.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh no that sucks! "Acceptable in the 80s" was pretty good but "The Girls" had the girls going wild! That song is hot.

I never checked the full album to be honest but I can't believe he would keep his entire new one on just one laptop. Way to suck, British Airways!

Rob Threezy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:34 (sixteen years ago) link

This is totally a dog-ate-my-homework story, and is Harris's excuse for not yet having churned out the follow up Columbia is no doubt pestering him for so they can rush release it before everyone gets (even more) sick of him.

JimD, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah as much as i would like this to be true, what kind of mongtard doesn't back that shit up?

blueski, Friday, 4 April 2008 13:52 (sixteen years ago) link

He should just steal Laromlab's album and pass it off as his own.

chap, Friday, 4 April 2008 13:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Has Dom been moonlighting as a baggage handler at Terminal 5?

Tom D., Friday, 4 April 2008 13:59 (sixteen years ago) link

of course he has another copy. its just a load of PR gumph aint it.

mark e, Friday, 4 April 2008 14:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Was about to say the same. If it was really the case they'd be suitably embarrassed to not issue a fucking press release about it

DJ Mencap, Friday, 4 April 2008 14:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Perhaps he did a song with Naomi Campbell and she wasn't too keen on it.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 4 April 2008 14:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe the record label is trying to get extra compensation from british airways

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 April 2008 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link

That would be hilarious so I hope you're right

i don't know if actual djs in actual clubs actually play him but yeah he's all over the radio, drinking from the bottle being the current irritant

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 March 2013 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

I can't imagine any DJ with any kind of rep ever playing Calvin Harris, but he's probably ubiquitous in high street nightclubs (ie most of the clubs in the UK).
