YEAH WORSHIP US BECAUSE WE ARE OLD. Infant.

(BTW, Clarke, we ended up choosing a Cotes-du-Rhone from 2000 and it went down a treat!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Nice to hear, Ned -- I might have a future in this beverage consultant thing just yet! I put on the s/t Young Gods today and marveled at its genius -- "Jimmy" and "Feu" = unstoppable greatness.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah good. :-) And yes, there's a third meal planned and your expertise will again be drawn upon...

Only Heaven is fucking MONSTROUS. What's this new comp? What else do i need?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Probbaly every album prior to that with the exception of the live Tv Sky tour one, seek out The Young Gods Play Kurt Weill which is a tremendous mini album.

The new comp is just a best of although there is an extra CD of remixes, they are also playing the Barfly in London on Nov 25th.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Should I get into Rammstein?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes! Or at least see one of their video collections. They're, um, impressive if nothing else.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh my. This is not going to be in any way objective because I write this two floors above their studio. The Young Gods are indeed with Yello our finest exports !

"Envoyé" is THE tune that smacked us all in the head (and the everything else) back in 1987 (!) and their 1st album remains a classic light years ahead of its time. Their late 80's live shows were awesome and I think I owe Franz a lifetime investment in music somehow. When you're not from a huge town and witness a local band with such a novel approach, you believe you too can do anything - or that at least the possibility exists.

Not content to do "just" shows these days, they're on a string of elaborate productions, most recently a live soundtracking of the "Woodstock" movie, and they pulled it off in style.

Only Heaven is fucking MONSTROUS

That it is. And yes you should get into Rammstein, Tom.

Blunt, that's a great post and summary! And I didn't realize you were Swiss, now there's that. Please pass my regards onto them when you run into them next, as I guess you sometimes do; just tell them I was that crazy Californian who started up that net mailing list ten years back...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 October 2005 17:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks, I certainly will Ned. I'm Swiss-American.

1st gig i ever saw was The Young Gods with support from laika at the OLD Glasgow Cathouse in 1995.
It was the only heaven tour. What a fantastic gig that was.
All the albums up until (and including) Only heaven are essential. The last 2 were a bit disappointing.

a friend and I videotaped their NYC gig on the l'eau rouge tour, unfortunately that one's lost to the sands of time...

gee, wonder if trent reznor ever watched that "envoye" video...

Edward III, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw that L'Eau Rouge tour, they were fucking incredible. The only band I can think of where the guitars sound real (but aren't) and the drums sound like a machine (but are real).

"I'm The Drug" is one of the best album-openers of the year, if not THE best.

OTM. Had a long chat w/them back in... whenever that was. I think the key to their live "goodness" was, there was no sequencer, so there was a really "live" feel to them. Interesting how they managed to sound more sequenced than they were, whereas Minstry/Rev Co, who played w/backing tracks managed to sound more "live" than they were.

Man, this is a good record, they really have evolved into some sort of 21st-century version of the Doors.

MaresNest, Sunday, 7 July 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

it's really good

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 7 July 2019 21:03 (four years ago) link

Really? I must give it a go, then.

I saw them twice in the early 90s and emerged from the gig thinking, "best gig I've ever seen". Always a good sign!

I've not paid attention since TV Sky, I think.

Duke, Sunday, 7 July 2019 21:24 (four years ago) link

oh man ya gotta hear Super Ready/Fragmente at the very least, Second Nature is great as well, I have not heard the new one but their output over the last 20 years has been very very solid

sleeve, Sunday, 7 July 2019 21:26 (four years ago) link

Ok. I'll take a look. I sort of forgot they existed..

Duke, Sunday, 7 July 2019 21:29 (four years ago) link
