Gravediggaz' 6 Ft Deep was the last rap LP I ever bought. Well, not last EVER - just the last one I bought upon release. I've bought many since then, but all from '93 or earlier. The only track that really stood out was the scarifying "Defective Trip".

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Naah, stand out track is "Bang Your Head" - if only for the surging synth.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:05 (nineteen years ago) link

what i particularly love about 6 Ft Deep is that it's not actually very dark at all! all the goth stuff is completely schlocky and goofy, the songs are all instantly catchy and full of hooks, it's basically a party album. one of the most 'fun' rap albums ever.

xpost OTM 'bang yr head' is def my favourite these days!

i a;so saw gravediggaz live live at the strangest place - 11am on the main stage at reading festival. completely out of place, but i rememebr it being pretty decent, esp bang your head

I was invoked above. Sort of, in a way.

Great album, been a while since I listened to it I admit.

"schemin' on a blowjob" line is from Killah Priest...as good as he is, I still think RZA steals the show - especially his hectic verse on "Trippin'"

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think Bob Digi gets enough props as a rapper.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

That is Killah Priest?!!? Really?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:27 (nineteen years ago) link

And the Grym Reaper is Frukwan or someone, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:35 (nineteen years ago) link

those Gravediggaz nicknames in full!

2 Poetic - The Grym Reaper
Frukwan - The Gatekeeper
RZA - The RZArector (do you see?!)
Prince Paul - The Undertaker

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

i liked the clean version better (maybe the only hip-hop album where that is so), since nearly every line has a weird sound effect over the no-no's (gun click, shovel, cough, knife sharpened, scream, splat, etc.) giving it a whole other level of noise.

BbetaA, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

This was one of the first albums I ever listened to ON WEED. It was PERFECT.

Too Poetic does the verse with "Old fat Ned, schemin' on a blow job from a crackhead". Dude had some of the best vocal inflections I've ever heard. Very creative.

His verse on "Mommy, What's A Gravedigga? (RZA Full Mix)" is fucking awesome. Like the part where he goes "You was washed in the blooooooooooooooooooooood of a lamb to be cleansed!" is cool.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG somebody needs to do a mashup of Gravediggaz and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

ah, I stand corrected...it's been a long time, must break that one out today

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Too Poetic is the one who was in Stetsasonic, right?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Prince Paul and Frukwan were both in Stetsasonic. Not Too Poetic.

You know what I only just discovered and can't believe I slept on so long? Liquid Swords! What's weird is I stuck it on the other night getting ready to blow my non-muso pals' minds and they were all "I can't believe you never heard this before"!

"Freak the Sorceress" on whatever Gravediggaz 12" it is rules as well.

I've got a dbl 12" with a version of "1-800 Suicide" with totally different, Jim Jones inspired, lyrics too.

The Portishead remix of 'em is dull tho'.

Is this the same as the video version of the song? Because it has totally different lyrics which are less satirical and more anti-suicide.

If this wouldn't include "Bang Your Head", it'd be a perfect album. I always skip that track, cos the beat sounds so horrible, what were they thinking?! It's still better than any other album featuring RZA tho.

Paul can be a bit much (Psychoanalysis, for ex.) Love Prince Among Thieves tho, that's an underrated masterpiece

He's pretty reined-in on 6 Ft Deep, this is about as close to straight-forward hip hop as he got.
Agreed on Prince Among Theives!

I can remember being so sorely disappointed with the follow up, from a period when RZA was doing a few albums a week and somewhat spreading himself thinly. I can't remember if Prince Paul even had much input and didn't the gatekeeper die between albums? it wasn't particularly terrible - but the magic had gone.

calzino, Monday, 12 August 2019 19:25 (four years ago) link

Grym Reaper (Poetic) died, but that was after the second album. I never heard the third one.

two years pass...

Back in the days of Lee's and BVD's
I grew up deceived, by wicked enemies
My lifespan began to dim in the error
When you can't even trust the man in the mirror
Now Gravedigga n****z receive my trust
and like Christ, we walk among the thieves and the sluts
I bring stress like skins on PMS
The street's a bloody mess, there ain't no EMF
in sight my thoughts are to leave the slums
I hustle with beats and drums not keys and guns
My feet are numb, as I walk my dogs
I cut off the fogs with the Gravedigga swords
Life parole, as me and my man is violated
Hookers are neutered and spay-ted
Snakes are decapitated, and castrated
N****z is lost your whole Ark is bein raided
Shows today are hectic, n****z'll wreck shit
Lift off rounds and jet quick
This piece is gettin heated
Cause a rush, a stampedin
Devils are all defeated by the blood brothers

I am always impressed by how well integrated the album's "true horror" elements are within the fun/camp/parody framework of the whole thing - reality keeps intruding into these songs in a subtle but persistent way which feels more horror than comedy-horror - sometimes the comedy elements are the point but other times they feel more like tools for getting to a deeper darker place
