Built like a racing snake Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker is set to release his first ever solo album in mid-2006.

Yes, it will indeed be Cocker's first time, as he apparently felt the new material wasn't suitable for his old band Pulp.

wasn't most pulp pretty much jarvis cocker solo stuff?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 7 January 2006 00:49 (eighteen years ago) link

hardly

This misunderstanding is prob because he was the only constant member (which is mainly due to It being made by essentially a completely different band).

Jarvis hit bittorrent today. Listening now. I've never been a huge fan of the man or Pulp in general, but this album's got plenty to chew on.

And if that isn't an actual sample of "Crimson & Clover" in "Black Magic," it's a flawless reproduction.

what's a "racing snake"?

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, there's no question about it. "Black Magic" = "Crimson & Clover." Is Richard X behind this?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm liking it! Got the Crimson & Clover thing too, but that's alright. Seeing as how there's surpringly much MOR-rockers on this album, and it still sounds nice and 'now'.

So last night I saw the first US date of his new Jarv Is... deal. In brief, no spoilers: ridiculously good show, unsurprisingly. Fifth time I’ve seen him in any context and he’s fully achieved the look of ‘seedy literature professor from a regional university down the disco in 1975.’ Band’s sharp, a couple of old and very appropriate favorites played, but mostly stellar new songs, lots of different musical approaches, genius lines one after the other. And he was of course an understated raconteur between songs.

Finally releasing some music.

More than a little hammy, especially at the start, but gets good in a psychedelic/motorik kind of way as it goes on.

Much better than anything on Further Complications anyway.

I was gonna say!

I've never been able to get into Jarvis' solo work on anywhere near the same level as prime-era Pulp.

I've been revisiting the first solo album and I really love it. It's got a pervasive, convincing gloom about it and the full "Loss Adjuster" (released as a b-side) is great.

one year passes...

Just discovered his 3-part documentary from 1999 about outsider art, great stuff, wish he made more art documentaries like this.

Last year when I was trying to search out music by “JARV” I found the white indie rapper JARV from Vermont and fell in love with his stuff a tiny bit. Thank you once again Mr Cocker!

I just want to add he's the middle class son of a Tory councillor .. and it shows .. and fuck the talentless cunt!

So what you're saying is

BREAKING: Jarvis Cocker may be middle class

shivers me timber (sic), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 02:26 (three years ago) link

there wasn't any ambiguity there Ned, so either say something or fucking don't! He's a tedious conservative prick as a cultural commentator whenever I encounter him on the radio and his music is utter shite - so that is indeed what I am saying!

xp: and you can fuck off as well sic!

I received Jarv Is as a xmas gift. I loved the first solo album and was disappointed by the second, so I had low expectations. Turns out the sound of the album is very nice, kinda shaggy and loose. The songs aren't really there, but it was a good listen.

Awful name for a project though.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 02:34 (three years ago) link

sorry I'm just a bit pissed tonight and have always hated this tool

calzino, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 02:40 (three years ago) link

Jarvis, i mean!

calzino, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 02:40 (three years ago) link

BREAKING: Jarvis Cocker may be middle class

possibly a bad idea for him to try and forge a career doing abysmal and trite social commentary where he positions himself as working class then, eh lads?

calzino, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 02:48 (three years ago) link

would rather watch journeys into my battered haemorrhoids with any random shameless burnt out brit-pop wanker on the beeb, reeling out the usual cliches and straining to sound interesting whilst saying nothing

calzino, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 02:58 (three years ago) link

okay go nap it off now

calzino, please don't take this the wrong way, but could you just not? please?

And you know we have discussed this at exhaustive length elsewhere, but the song Common People is about upper middle class people in London assuming you are working class. because you are from the north, his political views (see "Running The World") are pretty sound.

I guarantee you I won't trouble this thread on this utter non-entity ever again!

I was just blasting out HP Sauce '77 whilst doing the school run in my very middle-class hyundai hatchback the other day!

Shitters with Rick Witter.

Twelves, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 15:31 (three years ago) link

alky misery :(

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 16:21 (three years ago) link

Rick Witter had a greatest hits album go top ten in 1999, he was still a ways off the toilet circuit, let alone burning out up calzino's fundament

"Rick Witter's British Shitters" should absolutely be a travel show though
