fugees - fu gee la

The Carnival was my soundtrack of summer '97 and 'Fu-Gee-La' is one of my all time most-loved hip hop tracks. 'How Many Mics?' is woefully underappreciated, though the Score wasn't so hot overall. Also, Clef's sense of humour made those Virgin ads rock.

I think I'm the only human who likes the Lauryn Hill Unplugged album. I don't just like it, I actually love it! OH NO!!!

(And I honestly don't understand what about it is so bad as to be considered an "incident".)

"Fu Gee La" is definitely bad-ass and smooth, and The Score was a great album in so many ways. Clef's mic-rocking abilities maintained pretty well for The Carnival, but it seems like they fell short after that (although he still writes some good songs, don't get me wrong..."Thug Angels" is THE SHIT).

haha watching the black eyed peas on TOTP at the weekend i was thinking "of course! fugees for '03, no wonder they get so much stick on ILM!" (i love 'em both of course)

best song they didnt jack from somebody else?
huh? does no one know Teena Marie's "Ooh La La La"?

Pras was a hella good MC for awhile with one of my favorite deep-voiced laid-back styles, what's he been doing the past few years?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Was just gonna say that about "Oh La La." Every melody on that album is stolen from SOMEWHERE. That's the beauty of it.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 22 September 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

going off of memory the best track on The Score is "Zealots".

i'm amazed again at how some of the smartest people here still haven't figured out that uncool and/or awkward music can still be really good

"Oh La La La," whatever.

... i mean, i heard this @ starbucks tonight, after not hearing it for years. i was stunned with how good it still sounds after all these years.

Fu Gee La is dandy. I've yet to hear a Wyclef full-length (caught some singles) and would love too. Hell, I'm even curious about his version of "What's New Pussycat?" I'd also like to hear that Bono/Jean collabo for NetAid again, but I wouldn't be surprised if they destroyed all copies.

I gotta go with "Nappy Heads (Remix)" but "FuGeeLa" close second (and "Cowboys" close third)

Yeah that's the best single but my favorite track off this is Family Business. That part when Clef switches into maniac mode and L comes in and smooths it over with an insane verse of her own is O__o Also no Pras verse is a +

Listening to The Score for the first time in a decade or more. "The Mask" and "Cowboys" are a good 1-2.

If I'm honest with myself, The Carnival is one of my 10 favorite rap albums of the '90s (which is a bigger deal than it sounds, given how massive the pool of competition is).

Evan R, Friday, 1 March 2013 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

Probably in my top 40 or so. Love that album to death.
