I'm learning in researching this vital topic, that there is a thin line between smug and goofy.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

that Buster Poindexter cover is like the best thing ever!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Robbie is ahead in terms of pure smugitude, but Lenny gets points for probably not being aware of just how smug he appears.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I read "smug" as overly self-satisfied and brimming with an oversupply of not necessarily justified self-confidence.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 January 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Like so.....

Pretty much any album featuring the "upwards from the crotch" shot falls under the "smug" banner, I feel (see Nelly).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 January 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

And as dead cool as these gents are, they look like some awfully smug motherfuckers (`specially Dave Alexander in the back):

Robbie Williams seems to be looking ultra-smug on purpose, which is cheating.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 10 January 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Robbie Williams seems to be looking ultra-smug on purpose, which is cheating.

Exactly, ditto the Poindexter example. But I guess we're not allowed to guess at intentions.

Okay...now that guy in the middle with tinted aviator *IS* definitely a mannequin.

You losers have way too much time on your hands. Especially that Alex in NYC. Get a life for gods sake.

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Flattery will get you nowhere.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thank god.

Some truely sad individuals in this world

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

As I said on the Iggy/Corrs thread, how do you expect anyone to take you seriously if you lack the courage to put down an e-mail address?

Sorry, Ned. It had to be done. :)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

As someone replied in the Iggy/Corrs thread freaks like you will continually send loads of shitless, brainless crap into their clean inbox.

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, I don't have the time to waste on shit like that. I'd just respect you a bit more for having the moxy to stand by your bile. But, fair enough.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

How old are you anyway? You're probably only ten trying to pick up another sad and lonely loser.

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Look, if you're not even giving a proper name nor e-mail address, why should I bother divulging anything? All you need to know is available via the search mechanism. Get a life.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

You are telling me to get a life? Right...

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yawn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Your use of female sarcasm tells me that you're a poof.

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Didn't know sarcasm came with gender signifiers. Moreover, it wasn't sarcasm, it was genuine fatigue.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

You needed to write your "genuine fatigue" down? Your digging a bigger hole for yourself loser.

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Isn't it your bedtime yet?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh god it is! 3:30pm, shit i'm half an hour late.

Hmmm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Best thread ever.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

So everyone looking straight into the camera earnestly or half smiling, especially from above, appears to be smug. Did I get this straight?

Is it too late to go "oh no!!! FITE!!! oh no!!!" now?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 11 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

It wasn't even a proper fight! Hmmm was basically dissing himself with Alex standing next to him nodding politely.

I like the Alanis one

dave q, Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the Pink one. What's she doing looking so smug -- she's been marked down!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 11 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, most musicians don't fall into the trap of looking really smug on an album cover, it's nagl (e.g. self-satisfied and with a cheesy grin). Usually they pick a photo that's 'serious' or just smiling slightly - a music photographer could give plenty of actual insights into that!

When I was younger I thought that Sting and Annie Lennox always looked smug, middle class, middle aged. so I googled their album covers for this thread. but in every picture they both look so unsure, vulnerable... and young. damn.

seven months pass...

Bono had several names: first, he was "Steinhegvanhuysenolegbangbangbang", then just "Huyseman", followed by "Houseman", "Bon Murray", "Bono Vox of O'Connell Street", and finally just "Bono". "Bono Vox" is an alteration of Bonavox, a Latin phrase which translates to "good voice".

With Bono covers, I had to make a kind of Champions-League system to get it down to 50
