Nick, 'She's The One' by Roy Harper?!?!

youn, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I always do Prince's "Kiss" 'cause I can actually hit the high notes.

Douglas, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Youn, I'm so sorry, but no, Robbie Williams. Or Karl Wallinger if you think that's cooler.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can't hit any notes, but I won a karaoke comp performing I'm gonna be (500 miles), ideal for audience participation.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I once brought the house down at a honky tonk doing "Walkin' After Midnight." I'd like to do "Treats Your Daughter Mean."

Samantha, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

is alan parsons project really AVAILABLE on k-machines?

mark s, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

re: Alan Parsons Project - yes, that song is! How do I know?

Erm...I have it on a karaoke vcd at home. ;-)

Elisa K, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

At my local karaoke haunt/bowling alley there is a regular (young and rather cute, actually). We call him Tracksuit Boy, because he always wears a shiny Adidas track suit. Tracksuit Boy only does impersonations, with slight exaggeration for effect. He does a hilarious Prince and his Neil Diamond is spot on. I can't believe how many people waste this great opportunity to do performance art.

Unfortunately, many karaoke DJs are frustrated singers who take the whole thing too seriously. I jumped up and down once during a Who song, hit my head on an overhead beam, and then the Gloria Estefan-wannabe DJ wouldn't play any of my requests for the rest of the night.

Caroline Sibley, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have never done Karaoke...if I did, I would sing:

1. Livin' On A Prayer
2. Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now
3. I Would Do Anything For Love
4. Every Rose Has Its Thorn
5. Crazy Crazy Nights
6. Mr Brownstone.

jel, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've yet to find a karaoke machine that has 'Colony' on it.

DG, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tom:

Worst idea was doing the Teletubbies, easy.

This from the man who once did paranoid android...

My all time best, ebeneezeer goode by the shamen (with every word of the rap correct (because i'm a sad get)), although tainted love was my standard for years, recently have tried branching out, although still tend to stick to alt/indie type ones (Pretty in Pink, Maggie May, Panic (although the KoC versh is well short)). Pete's Hazard and Tag's Don't you forget about me are both top notch though...

Urgent and Key

Graham, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've never played karaoke before, but I'd imagine my favorite pick would be "You're the best!" from the Karate Kid soundtrack.

Mandee, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tonight Matthew, I'm going to sing 'Song 2' in the style of Dean Martin. I always put a little 'lounge' twist on everything I sing. Even 'Atrocity Exhibition': 'Forrrr entertainment (whoa yeahhh) they watch his body a-twi-itch (whoo!)' Bring on the KoC!

Will, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I would like to inform you I have been practising my hem hem 'flow' to the GURL bit in Perfect Gentleman.

Sarah, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've only done Karaoke twice due to fears over nastiness of my singing voice, I did "last train to Clarkesville" the night I got my A-level results and "some might say" as a duet with a random stranger the last night I lived in Chesterfield. I think they were awful

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Karaoke is fun I bet but is it as much fun as singing on the street on the way home?

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

oh, I don't mind doing that, it's fun, and obviously I don't have any fears over my voice when I'm that drunk.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Last year sometime we were coming home and one of my friends said it was Jay Zs birthday and started singing happy birthday to him. A policeman came over at some point and was like "which one you is jay z".

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Aaaaaaaahahhahahahahahaha that is GENIUS I like them police I do.

Sarah, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

one year passes...
i did "lollipop (candyman)" by aqua!

both voices!!

i wz told it was a "phenomenon"

haha the best thing wz [xXx] wz there — we haven't been in the same room for i think two years, and we between us managed total non eye-contact, BUT i sang "lollipop (candyman)" by aqua (which includes the line "i wish that i were a bubblegum"), and [xXx] sang nothing so i win utterly

(i realise it doesn't actually work like that)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:44 (twenty years ago) link

If I could find a karaoke machine with Divine Comedy songs it'd be ace, cos I've got that well mannered voice thing going ON.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

(it does work like that mark s wins)

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:02 (twenty years ago) link

i'm perfecting my Phil Oakey still...and i'm still hoping to find Kid Creole listed somewhere, its all about the 80s classics basically (predictably)

VIN DIESEL WAS AT KARAOKE WITH MARK S!!

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

my repertoire:

freda payne : band of gold
neil diamond : shiloh
the box tops : the letter
astrud gilberto : girl from ipanema
cheap trick : surrender

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

My "Like a Rolling Stone" is tops, plus I'm the only person at any given karaoke bar/booth who knows ALL the words by heart and is aware of how they fit into the rhythm of the song.

I'm no fun to do karaoke with. People have told me this. No one ever wants to follow my triumphant performances with their off-key drunken mushmouthed bleating.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:42 (twenty years ago) link

ok the downside of karaoke is that you are still unconsciously singing the song seven days later ALL THE TIME

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 8 May 2003 08:44 (twenty years ago) link

My 'Hound Dog' is just about passable.

If I'm too inebriated I've been known to attempt 'American Trilogy' - always a big mistake.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 8 May 2003 09:02 (twenty years ago) link

I've done:

Take That - Back for Good
Queen - Don't Stop me Now
Queen - Killer Queen
Queen - I Want to Break Free
Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons - Sherry
A-Ha - Take on Me
Pogues - Fairytale of New York (with Ally C)
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Who am I (What's my Name)
Sugababes - Freak Like Me
Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
Chicago - Hard to Say I'm Sorry
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Lionel Richie - Hello
Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
Manic Street Preachers - A Design for Life
Patsy Cline - Crazy

...and many more! (probably)

Make sure you're properly (un)dressed for your performance! "Wow, he really needs to learn the words to verse two, AND do a few sit-ups!"

Skottie, Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:23 (twenty years ago) link

Once again, "offbeat" does not equal "beat off"

Skottie, Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:28 (twenty years ago) link

I always do the same old shit-

"Paranoid", "Boys Are Back In Town", "Thong Song", and "Fill Me In".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:40 (twenty years ago) link

Always, "word up" because I like to say "yaoooo"

Skottie, Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:41 (twenty years ago) link

If there was a karoake wiffin reach I would karayooke Michael Jackson's "Rock WIth You".

Fuck it, I'ma' do it anyway.

Also, 'Head Over Heels' is always a good choice.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Adina Howard - "Freak Like Me"
Roxy Music - "Love is the Drug"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I usually go with the big, dumb modern rock radio anthems...

"Semi-Charmed Life" - Third Eye Blind
"Swing, Swing" - The All-American Rejects
"Sucked Out" - Superdrag (the DJ at a karaoke night I used to frequent actually had this)
"Follow Me" - Uncle Kracker
"Right Now" - SR-71
"Girl All The Bad Guys Want" - Bowling For Soup

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, I do an amazing Steve Perry falsetto impression, so "Don't Stop Believin'" is usually a crowd pleaser.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

"House of Rising Sun" - The Animals
"The Joker" - Steve Miller Band
"Summertime" - Janis Joplin
"50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon
"Rebel Yell" - Billy Idol

Laura E (laurae55), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

"i'm not in love" - 10cc
"take my breath away" - berlin
"leader of the pack" shangri-las
"what's going on" marvin gaye
"are you that somebody" aaliyah
"relax" - frankie goes to hollywood

these are the songs i did do last weekend at karaoke

My specialty number is "Brandy" by Looking Glass, preferably with audience participation on the backing vocals.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

God I love a good ballad. Sadly, they don't go over nearly as well with crowd. Philistines ::sniff::

I've done well with:
"Keep On Lovin' You"
"Wild Horses"
"Angel From Montgomery"
"Feel Like Makin' Love"

There was a, er, KJ, who used to set up at my local who had "Tuesday's Gone." I live to find that again.

Also, why does every karaoke bar have "Love is the Drug" and "Virgina Plain" but no other Roxy? Very sad...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I can only really do Tom Waits or Eels songs. Which is a bit of a downer on a karaoke night, admittedly.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:02 (eighteen years ago) link

But how cool is your karaoke joint to have Tom Waits and Eels!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, when I said "karaoke", I actually meant "me singing to a bunch of people who probably don't really want to hear it"

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:07 (eighteen years ago) link

There used to be a Japanese place in NYC called Candy B-1, where the Decibel sake bar now is, which did karaoke with a live band instead of backing tracks. It really added a lot.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I think there was a place which had an eels track though...

Holly Godarkbloom (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 June 2023 20:01 (nine months ago) link

Maybe I will have to approach it gradually, by doing “Poison Arrow” and “When Smokey Sings” in prior weeks.

Holly Godarkbloom (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 June 2023 20:02 (nine months ago) link

I'd love to do 'Ain't It Fun' but that's way above my capabilities. 'Tears Are Not Enough' would be my ABC pick - at least trying to go that high might be funny.

Man oh man, they started booking rock bands now before the karaoke, often playing at Live at Leeds volume in this cozy little place, which pushes the karaoke back even further into the wee wee hours, assuming it even happens at all.

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:52 (eight months ago) link

They should make the bands play for karaoke

the new drip king (DJP), Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:52 (eight months ago) link

we have one actual karaoke venue at Citywalk that does exactly that, though for apparently only two nights a week. however, it's a crapshoot if you ever get called to perform as so many people sign up and htey pick randomly.

we also used to have a Blue Martini around here that did it where just about everybody got called up, and man....was it fun! so different singing in front of a band. more likely to move around and have fun with it.

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:54 (eight months ago) link

Ha, another band tonight, and they just played one of my karaoke tunes from a few weeks ago and did a good job so I will give them a chance.
