I have many scarves. I love them. My favorite one at the moment is an angora scarf that is pink, mint green and brown.

Mandee, Monday, 11 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wait, can Angora even be knitted? I just realized it may be some other soft wooly thing, not angora. Oh, it doesn't matter anyway.

Mandee, Monday, 11 November 2002 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Scarves are a bit rubbish, they always end up being blown about or screwed up at the bottom of your bag. "

not true, they are quite useful for plugging up the neck hole of your jacket and keeping the cold out in the winter, if you wear them correctly.

g (graysonlane), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, but over here it doesn't get cold anymore.

I have a Celtic scarf, an AFC Wimbledon scarf and a St Pauli scarf. I am a monomaniac and it hurts.

nelson has a scarf but i do not.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just crocheted myself a new scarf, it's aqua with fringes and about 9' long. I also made one for my friend which is muted green with brown and beige fringe (he likes wearing unobtrusive colours). I also made a plain white scarf, and before any of these was a plain black scarf made from yarn unravelled from a knitted black bag my babysitter made me when I was small. I never used the bag because it was too stretchy to carry anything heavy in, so instead of throwing it out I decided to make it into something new! and that is how my scarf making mania came about. THE END

Poppy (poppy), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have two manx tartan scarves, one coarse weave one fine. I lurid tartan; blue, purple, green, white, brown, yellow and red all feature.

I have two silk scarves one thick slubby blue and one filmy printed plum/black/white.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Poppy, crocheting is cool! I want to crochet the new kind of scarf I've seen around that looks like it's made of those granny afghan squares connected by black and with the multicolor fringe.

My scarves:

a Lindsey tartan cashmere scarf
a stripey florescent orange and pink wool scarf
a navy green and maroon fictional school scarf
a silk twill scarf with Persian hussairs on it
an orange pleated silk scarf with Andalusian horses on it
a celery colored silk pocket square with a tiny repeating camel pattern on it
a chiffon scarf with tiny multicolored pattern on it

I went through a phase when all I wanted was a perfectly square white chiffon scarf with navy polka dots on it. I think I bought one like this for my grandmother but then I couldn't find one for myself. People tried to buy me ones but the dots would be wrong or the shape wasn't right or it would be white on navy, so I gave up.

I don't really wear scarves much anymore. Except for the warm scarves, I haven't worn any of these scarves in the past year except one of the silk ones that I sometimes wear as a belt with a denim skirt.

You can never have too many scarves or belts or shoes or sunglasses or hats or . . . (even Amanda de Cadanet can remember the word "accessories")

felicity (felicity), Monday, 11 November 2002 22:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Scarves: 1 black cashmere
1 black wool/angora
1 pink plaid cashmere
1 camel plaid cashmere (bad Burberry knockoff)
1 black mohair
1 snow leopard print silk
1 magenta morning glories print silk
1 blue Provencal print silk
1 black-and-white bamboo print silk
1 lavender-and-green fox print silk
1 keyboard-themed print silk
1 beer-themed print silk

I don't wear any of these very much.

Sock drawer: left one-third (most approximately) for socks; right two-thirds for tights/pantyhose.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

ooh, pink plaid cashmere, pretty.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 03:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sock drawer = absolute chaos. I don't like wearing them much, other than with Doc Martens, anyway.

Scarves = 1 pale blue skinny 6' long one that I always wear, 1 fringed white acrylic one, and 1 thick, bright red, rib knit one- which I love, but it's never cold enough to wear it out here.

I have one scarf. it is light grey wool. no patterns.

I recently threw out all of my socks (they were all quite old) and bought new ones, so I can tell you exactly what I have:
6 pr. thin black socks
6 pr. thick black socks
3 pr. thick charcoal socks
the socks are paired but not organized, as there is no need for them to be.

One striped earth-toned wool scarf; not too attractive, not too ugly, but warm.
Socks are mainly chaos.

dear fashion gurettes:
i need to impress a european girl by wearing a nice scarf.

it needs to go with a dark blue jacket and a brown cordouroy jacket.

i am in the world capitol of scarves, so any color or combination of colors will be easy to come by, i think.

so what colors? what sizes? what fabrics?

also, can someone point me to a easy-to-understand demonstration of how to best and most fashionably wear a scarf? so far i've been getting by with an indifferent wrap-around.

sincerely,

frost in translation

Um. I don't have an answer for that, am. But I do have a grey scarf that is twice as long as I am tall which my bandmate knitted for me. So there.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 October 2003 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

I double up my scarf and then I put it around my neck, and put the ends through the loop. I think if your date requires any more complicated display of scarfmanship then she can just fuck right off.

you shd use a scarf sitffened by wire so it stands out behind you and looks as if you're battling yr way thru a hurricane to see yr honey. who will be flattered by yr dauntless heroism in the face of extreme weather, just to see her/him, and - if the imposture becomes known - secretly moved by yr passion and cute inventiveness

losing scarves is something I'm good at.

my latest one is greyish black woollen (sp?) scarf. I need a good loop method too.

amt should get a wool 'twee' scarf, which means bright colours.

I too am an Oxford-type person, and I own one scarf - an Oxford Utd scarf. Although the idea was for me to buy a load of scraves, it just hasn't worked out liek that - they're either too pretenscious, or too girly. Scarves are a bit like umbrellas - they're very English, and half eccentic, half cool.

Saying that, I have LOADS of umbrellas.

I really want a pale, pale gray cashmere ribbed scarf that's about 8" wide, but I haven't found one in stores. I take that back, I haven't found any at prices I'm willing to pay in stores.

Hah! Sam, I do the same thing. I've only knit myself about 3 scarves, and about 30 for other people. I feel like such a fake, wearing a MACHINE-KNIT scarf. Oh well. It's a nice color.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 9 February 2007 18:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't wear usually winter scarves myself, and yet I knit them for other people. There's no reason to feel stupid about it; you're just selfless, right?!

I do have two cool hand-knit "fashion" scarves made from interesting fibers - one my MIL made for me; the other she gave me the fiber for and I did myself. (The one I did myself the brand is Galaxy and it is made in Italy. It's viscose, rayon and acrylic - sort of a lovely combination of rose, glue, black and metallic gold).

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

glue?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm horrible about actually sewing/knitting things myself. all of my own projects go on the backburner while I make gifts. i enjoy foisting my handmade items on unwilling loved ones.

I briefly thought of unraveling my own target-bought red chenille scarf and reknitting it but the fiber looked cheap and unfun to knit.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I'm way too selfish to knit.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Knittis is great! It gives you something to do with your hands. It is also fun to have people come up to you and be impressed, even when you are knitting something super simple. (Like say, a scarf...)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:24 (seventeen years ago) link

All my scarfs (and hats) are hand knit. They are much warmer than the store boughts.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 10 February 2007 02:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I looooove watching people knit on the train, but I don't favor winter scarves because standard ones are never big enough for the babushka wrap-around that is my excuse to never wear a stocking cap. Shawls, that's where it's at.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 10 February 2007 03:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I got discouraged from crocheting scarves, because the yarn ends always end up coming out of my crochet no matter how carefully I try to weave them in after. So now I have a storebought plain black scarf and a pink fake-burberryish one and a light blue one.

I still like crochet though so I'm thinking about making a scarf from green/lilac/blue yarn I have and hiding the yarn ends in some fringe.

Poppy (poppy), Saturday, 10 February 2007 03:58 (seventeen years ago) link

just got two colorful striped scarves (big enough to work as shawls or whatever too) of delightfully fine cotton---one orange, and one blue & green. $5 apiece! Sort of in this vein:

Anyway, the reason I need a new one is that I keep losing them so spending any moderate amount of money is probably a bad idea.
