when is it coming out? I was feeling a bit jaded about it, but the last week or so have been thinking it might be fun to roll some more stuff up again...

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

October 15th? Itll make up a little tiny bit for the GTAIV delay. Assuming this doesnt get delayed too.

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

took me forever to know what a donkey kong machine was...

Will M., Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

...but I think I will end up getting this. but i won't play it. i'll just watch the gf play it.

Will M., Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

holy shit awesome

also, if you did not buy it, how did you get your current dodgers pic?

Will M., Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link

i still ahve 200 ms points lying in my account, too... i really don't want to spend 80 though, because then there's that 20 just sitting there. its a fucking dirty ploy to make me buy 5 picture packs, isn't it :(

Will M., Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

oh - they had that deal where you could get a year's gold subscription with the vision camera and a couple of games for, I think, sixty bucks - so I figured what the hell. You can snap a picture of whatever you want that way for your gamerpick - but only your friends see it. you can also plop a photo of your face onto your character in Rainbow 6 multiplayer

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 September 2007 22:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I was looking at those pics again, and I am tempted to get this guy

He looks like the prince got really drunk and joined a rock band

poor prince

three weeks pass...

played it! awesome so awesome!

jhøshea, Thursday, 18 October 2007 05:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Sorry, I am dum but is this just on xbox? I want to play really really bad but don't think I want to get an xbox.

n/a, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I am basically on the fence about the 360 for no other reason than the physical unit itself is so atrociously ugly and stupid looking next to every other piece of industrial design ever conceived

El Tomboto, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

it's 360 only but there's a very good chance that it'll be on the other platforms, because they keep false-start-not-quite-announcing it (they had it on their website for a couple of days, for instance). Oh and that website thing happened >1 time.

the guy's also making another new game for the ps3 where you're a big... tube. And you have to buy a big tube as your controller. And you, like, bend the tube to bend your guy. Or something. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobi_Nobi_Boy

Will M., Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:09 (sixteen years ago) link

As somebody who bought a ps2 for the first Katamari, I can pretty much guarantee, after working my way 20% through Beautiful Katamari (in an hour or so), that it's defnitely NOT worthwhile to buy a xbox 360 just to play this new one. Here's why - it's not awesome at all, especially if you've played any of the previous games, because it seems to be basically EXACTLY the same game, except everything about the game is actually a little worse - nothing is improved or refined at all (disclaimer: I've yet to try the multiplayer), not even the graphics - which in some cases, especially during the cut scenes, actually look worse than the ps2 games. The game also has weird slowdown problems and clunky transistions up the wazoo (no loading between the different areas, but a really weird, disorienting transistion that is hard to explain, and is maybe worse than the old loading screens). It's basically just a bad, halfhearted copy of a once amazing game. It's a real shame how quickly a game that was once known for it's creativity and originality now offers neither. You'd be better served to just replay the old games.

Nothing to see here - please move along.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

jeez

jhøshea, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i played this last night. it made me really nauseous!

im pretty sick of katamari i gotta say. all those fuckin whimsical text boxes.

s1ocki, Thursday, 18 October 2007 16:04 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah I wouldn't get a 360 for katamari at all! I just want to play old skool 2D WORMS ARMAGEDDON online, really. I should make a chart of XBLA titles I think would be fun and estimated $$$ value of said probable fun and see when it adds up to three hundred bucks

El Tomboto, Thursday, 18 October 2007 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

puzzle fighter HD will get you a long way there.

s1ocki, Thursday, 18 October 2007 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah there's no reason to buy this game if you've already played through the first two.

polyphonic, Thursday, 18 October 2007 18:59 (sixteen years ago) link

okay - since getting over my disappointment that the game is essentially just a retread - i have discovered that the game is also pretty much just as addictive as the earlier versions. uh oh.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:18 (sixteen years ago) link

was the second game not just like the first game? how much can a game about rolling a ball really change?

sunny successor, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, the second one had a lot of new maps, and they ironed out some of the control issues. BK seems like it recycles a lot of the old maps, but now featuring a greater density of stuff to roll up and better graphics. Also, the katamari seems to move a little easier.

Could be wrong about the maps, though, since I've only played the demo and am basing this mostly on hearsay.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

the second game had like eleven new songs on the soundtrack
and also you could roll up the seven wonders of the world

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, there's no mid-level loading in this one and the transitions seems smoother, and I think you can get bigger? Like rolling up continents?

antexit, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I rolled up everything there was to roll up in the others, to the point where it was trolling around in the ocean, trying to roll up Gods and stuff.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 22:09 (sixteen years ago) link

That was all in the PS2 version as well.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 00:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Is the music in this one as good as the others? I might just dl the soundtrack and listen to it while I play KD.

nickalicious, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

A lot of the songs seem to be just remixes of the old ones, they're okay though. There are some of the same musical bits too. I was just thinking last night how stupid/lazy it was that they didn't even change up the loading screens...

Now that I've managed to round up 40 cousins, I do like how crowded and busy the little level select areas are.

I wonder if they regret showing how many people have played the game online first thing when you look at the Everybody's Katamari leader boards. It's kind of pathetic to see a retail game with so few users - I think they just cracked 15,000 yesterday

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 25 October 2007 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

one year passes...

Picked this up yesterday for £10. Doubt I'll keep hold of it for long. I don't understand why they chose to make it so much harder than the previous katamari games? It feels like the time limits are just way tighter than they used to be, so I'm having to try stages as many as 4 or 5 times each. That, coupled with the new dynamic where you need to be mindful of what you're picking up (rather than just trying to grab absolutely anything), and with the slowdown, and with the slightly lopsided feel of the xbox pad, and with the repetition of levels which already feel overfamiliar...well, it all combines to suck the fun out of what should be one of the most purely fun games ever.

JimD, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 09:46 (fifteen years ago) link

agreed. This is the first Katamari I've been able to play (never had a ps2), and I've been disappointed.

Euler, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link

so what were/are "fucking donkey kong machines"?!?!

zappi, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess that would refer to the Wii. But BK ultimately only ever came out on the 360.

snoball, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

ook ook!!! ook ook!!

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

five years pass...

Finally played Katamari Damacy for the first time. I have been waiting to play this forever, and it did not disappoint! So good!

Btw, i don't have a PS2, played it on PCSX2. It has a little bit of slowdown at parts but it really doesn't bother me and in fact kind of fits the whole psychedelicness of it all. Damn fun game!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 26 December 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link

Last night I realized that a large part of the appeal for me is the simplified 3d models in this game. In particular the people look straight out of a way weirder version of the "Money for Nothing" music video.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 28 December 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

what are the chances of a new Katamari game

Gotta take it slow in your fast ride (calstars), Saturday, 28 December 2013 15:56 (ten years ago) link

played it on PCSX2. It has a little bit of slowdown at parts but it really doesn't bother me

There was LOTS of slowdown on a real ps2 (if I remember right), so it shouldn't bother you. But yeah, the graphics / humor / music & style are what make the game, not so much the rolling up gameplay / challenge of beating the levels / collect-a-thon...

JCL, Sunday, 29 December 2013 01:14 (ten years ago) link

It's actually pretty challenging though! Usually I have to play a level 2 or 3 times before passing.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 29 December 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link

nine years pass...

im still playing this but its called 'Katamari Reroll' now and its not as fun.

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Thursday, 27 April 2023 19:57 (eleven months ago) link

I need one of those ps3s thats backwards compatible for psone and 2.

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Thursday, 27 April 2023 19:58 (eleven months ago) link

isn't Reroll just the first game, re-released? I got it for the Switch because it was cheap, and it was fun but I wasn't really too into it. the Switch controller doesn't really work well for this sort of thing.

frogbs, Thursday, 27 April 2023 19:59 (eleven months ago) link

people look straight out of a way weirder version of the "Money for Nothing" music video.

haha yes

Ste, Thursday, 27 April 2023 20:02 (eleven months ago) link

yeah Reroll is just remastered (or w/e) for hi-def TVs, it should be the same amount of fun, I don't think they changed a thing. It's kind of annoying they didn't include We <3 Katamari as well, but it's probably tedious work upscaling the graphics

rob, Thursday, 27 April 2023 20:19 (eleven months ago) link

I thought you rolled up the sun at the end of the original katamari. now its the moon.

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Thursday, 27 April 2023 20:28 (eleven months ago) link

xp they're releasing a we <3 katamari reroll separately, soon-ish

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 April 2023 20:31 (eleven months ago) link

I'm not sure about this, but I think you do the moon in the original and the sun in We <3 ?

xp ah good to know!

rob, Thursday, 27 April 2023 20:35 (eleven months ago) link

Ah could be! Good to hear about We <3 coming out.

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Thursday, 27 April 2023 22:58 (eleven months ago) link

one month passes...

ha, neat
