It involved a pair of give-away shorts signed by then-Yankees OF Claudell Washington (if he was on the Yankees) and a bullpen car. And my dad's car losing its muffler on the way home. I think.

The Retrosheet details are totally unreconcilable with my memory. I'm convinced it was a Mets-Cubs game in 1970, but I can't locate the date. The big NY media story surrounding it was the return of ex-Yankee Joe Pepitone with the Cubs.

The first one I can locate the specific details of: June 16, 1973. Mets and Jerry Koosman beat San Diego, 10-2. Willie Mays hit his 656th homer... and returning Vietnam POWs were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

All I'm certain of is that it was Padres vs. Astros in the Astrodome. I believe it was in 1980, but could have been '81 or '82. I can't even remember who won.

The first one I have any clear recollection of was a Cubs-Astros tilt in '87 in which Nolan Ryan threw a complete game. The Astros won with the go-ahead run scoring on a bases-loaded triple by 3B Sonny Jackson in the 7th or 8th inning.

it's amazing how little i remember. i know it was an august o's/twins day game at memorial stadium. o's won. from retrosheet i'm going to say it was th 26th or 27th of august 1983.

huh.

The Tigers around '76 or whenever Rusty Staub was on the team. I remember eyeing up a cool Braves helmet at the souvenir stand, I think it was white and light blue. I believe they were giving out those mini wooden bats at that game. I'll never remember who they were playing.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, Retrosheet has proven to me how unreliable my memory is. That second game I described was in 13 May 1988, and the go-ahead run was scored much earlier than the 8th, but the Astros did put up a 4-spot in that inning. Nolan Ryan started against Jamie Moyer. Glenn Davis and Andre Dawson both his home runs.

And I think I may have found the earlier one. It's the only Friday night home game against the Padres in '80. If that's the game I was at, then I saw Rollie Fingers get the save that night!

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

cool, rollie fingers. if i'd known el tiante was on the hill i might have paid more attention to my game. and in perusing the boxscore again, i noticed that fragile freddy lynn wasn't in the lineup that day in may in '78, instead yaz (who had to be closing in on 40 years old by then) was playing center.

this thread coincides nicely with the White Sox stat book I picked up yesterday for a dollar (only complete to 1984).

Wow, you guys are all so young. I can't remember my first game, because I was a baby (does being in the womb count?).

My mother was and is a huge Yankee hater.

So one of my first games was probably this one. Or maybe this one.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

As far as I know, this was my first major league game. Thankfully whatever memories I had of Calvin Schiraldi on the hill are eclipsed by memories of drunken antics in the RF bleachers. A real learning experience for this 8 year old.

hey, there will be no dropping of c-bombs in this forum.

My first game was seeing the Reds and Pirates in 1975 at Riverfront, I was five years old. I don't remember much about the game other than it was sunny, hot and I got a cool little kid Bench No.5 jersey.

I was taken to a 1971 World Series game in Pittsburgh, but I don't remember it because I was about two weeks old

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

7/31/85, Padres at Braves, Fulton Co. Stadium. Braves won 5-4 in 10 innings.

2nd game was better: Jim Abbott threw a complete-game four-hitter for the Angels against the Red Sox, 8/30/89 at Fenway.

Hey, I'm not young. I probably saw Nolan Ryan pitch for the Mets.

Ha! Former Astro Great Larry Andersen picked up the W in that game.

2nd game (I'm pretty sure). SRO - I was right behind home plate. I think Clemens was coming back from a hamstring pull. I remember Brunansky's homer; I didn't remember the near collapse (thanks to Boggs clone Dennis Lamp) until I saw this boxscore, though.

Can't for the life of me remember the exact details of my first game, which is slightly depressing. It was certainly at Tiger Stadium though. Probably '79/'80/'81, somewhere in there. I was just waking up to baseball in time to witness the Tigers run-up to the 1984 season.

I can totally remember my first hockey game though, a Red Wings 5-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets at the Joe. My dad took me early to watch skate-around, and Reed Larson threw me a practice puck! I still have it, too - in fact it's right here on my desk! I don't think they have old box scores for hockey, though.

First game - 1986ish, in an Arlington Stadium luxury suite, I wasn't quite five, I fell asleep right away.

First game I remember well - Nolan Ryan's seventh no-hitter, front row seats a little past third, got Roberto Alomar's autograph before the game, I actually had written out an entire box-score predicting the no-hitter in my school journal that day. (note: I was a fucking nerd about stats and stuff when I was little. I played in my first for-money rotisserie league in 1990 and cleaned house w/ Cecil Fielder, Bob Welch and Bobby Thigpen. Not having a job and spending all summer watching baseball might have helped.)

me at 20 is disturbingly like you at 10. except i'm not making any money.

my first game (i think): http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B07130SLN1998.htm it was a locally organized trip, and not terribly memorable. i was glad it went into extra innings, althoug nobody else seemed to be. upper deck seats, but we snuck down lower in the mid-innings and still lower in the late ones. it was the mark mcgwire show that year, of course, and he failed us on that night. i barely remember any other details (some comments about what a hoss gary gaetti was). i wasn't much of a baseball fan in those days but i understood the magnitude of that HR race as well as anyone. a fun summer, i'm sure.

Rotisserie and my pre-teen experience setting up at baseball card shows with my parents (and on my own at flea markets - I was a rather capitalistic little kid for a pinko) are basically what doomed my interest in modern baseball, even before the '94 strike.

This has to be the craziest game I've ever witnessed:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B06030HOU1989.htm

I watched the entire thing on TV, all 22 innings of it.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:06 (nineteen years ago) link

for crazy games, i was supposed to be at this one (check the twins fielding for the craziness) but my buddy chuck bailed on me and our friend jon to be with his girlfriend. we went the next night and if memory serves me correctly it was jeff reardon's 300th save. i also saw some guy get pummelled by the fenway gestapo for smoking weed in the concourse behind first base.

I don't know how you guys get on with your fancy one word linking but this game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B04120NYA1983.htm
might've been my first game, but it could have been the 85 home opener too. I remember it was a day game and I know it was just me and my grandfather, but I don't remember Guidry getting pounded, but I was only 8 and I've done alot of drugs since then so it's a tough call. I remember they gave out these "Billy's Back" t shirts, it has a graphic of Martin sticking his thumb out and pointing over his back.
My grandfater made me a scrapbook for the entire season with tons of newspaper clippings, box scores, league leaders... pretty cool stuff and I could defintetly pin down the date but the scrapbook's at my grandmother's house.
