"when it's over" really is great. it's funny how they started with a crap hit, and then just kept repeating the formula until it eventually became something good. maybe that phenomenon deserves a thread? (not that i'm gonna, but if anyone else wants to, please run with it)

I quite like Sugar Ray singles, although a halfway-decent singer would be a great help to them.

"When It's Over" -- was that the one that sounded like some sort of Trash Can Sinatras / America hybrid? (Cause that was the one I liked best.)

it's not so much defending Sugar Ray (i really like only a few of their songs -- otherwise, i don't really have much of an opinion about 'em one way or another, they were really just a generic late 90s kinda-OK sorta-alternative group) as it is that if someone had a gun to my head and forced me to choose b/w them and Sigur Ros, then "fly" would win out every time over "svefn-g-englar" or whatever.

love hearing "fly", "every morning" while at the hardware store or whatever. the video for "fly" kind of warms my heart for some reason.
sugar ray's stuff with metal guitars is really bad, though.

i like the dark frosty stuff on the "alien fetus" sigur ros album. not at all into the whole heavy orchestra syrupy Sound of Music thing.

so i pick sugar ray, because i rarely hear a bad song of theirs in public. sigur ros's whole rep now is due to their andrew lloyd weber style that i abhor so greatly.

It's surprisingly terrific, actually. McGrath nails the vocal.

And, yeah, The Beach soundtrack was essential for me in the pre-Napster days when all I wanted was the new New Order song, Orbital, and UNKLE.
