Probably a futile post, but does anyone follow Gareth Sager anymore? He has like four albums out last year from what I can tell (2 on Spotify) and bits are totally brilliant. The same ("sometimes brilliant") is true for his previous two albums, also as C.C. Sager. It's weird that *nobody* seems to keep track of him.

Sounds okay, but much more like a Mark Stewart & Maffia track than the Pop Group as such.

There were a couple of live sets from the recent Uk tour upped to Dime over the last month that were great. Sounded like a more mature version of the old band. Not playing at the edge of ability cos ability expanded but still possessing a dark intensity.
So I'm hoping that the new lp I heard about this week is going to be good.
Also there was a '78 gig I hadn't come across before. Is there a site listing what gigs were recorded from the original era anywhere?

I think the 2 compilations that came out recently are part of a longer (re)issue series. Think I've heard How Much Longer is coming as well as some more unreleased stuff hence the (re).
Btw does anybody know what was in the 36 page book that came in the Limited Edition Curiosities Box version of the 2 compilations together? I've only seen the description as something like 'perfectly bound 36 page book' with nothing about content. Neither of the separate cds had much in the way of liner notes so I wonder if that did.
Is there a band history written up anywhere?

Pathetic. It's half great, half not so much. Definitely worth hearing.

By contrast, there is almost no space anywhere on Citizen Zombie, beyond the pauses between tracks. Every moment is crammed with stray sound and errant fury: blooms of guitar distortion or thuds of industrial beats or some of the most incongruent backing vocals imaginable. Even closer "Echelon", which is the closest this album gets to a quiet moment, eventually piles on the synths and guitars and even a pipe organ. Featuring production by the eclectic Paul Epworth (Adele,U2, Cee-Lo Green, and Crystal Castles, among many others), the album sounds scripted and overdetermined, its noise and commotion sculpted to assault your ears. Superficially, it’s successful, in that it’s not easy to listen to these songs. Yet, it feels like a cheap tactic, as if the band don’t trust themselves to get their point across and, worse, don’t trust their listeners to comprehend anything but the most blatant lyric and the most thudding attack. The result of so much suspicion is an album that’s somehow both loud and timid—all clamor and no soul.

Openers in LA were Sex Stains (Alison of Bratmobile's new band) and Peaking Lights.

Finally got around to getting the recent reissue of For HOw Much longer and liking it a lot more than I remember from having the Vinyl years ago. Band is reasonably recognisable from the band on Y but the production is very different.
I always thought it sounded heavily compressed, it does sound claustrophobic possibly but great great record.

I'm now seeing taht there's a live lp from the same era about to be released. Compilation of various recordings from the tour supporting the lp I think alongside a dvd of material recorded by Don Letts from around the time.

I was hoping there was a live lp due but thought it might be similar to the live 2cd that was released in Japan which consisted of 3 complete sets or at least partial ones. I have those sets on flac from having dowenloaded them fro places like Dime prior to the Japanese release but would still have liked a physixcal cd with possibly better sound.

Do wonder if this live cd which is called THe Boys Whose Heads Exploded might be the first of a few live compis or if it is the end of releases.

The Pop Group unveil their latest archival release, The Boys Whose Head Exploded. Compiled from unearthed basement tapes recorded during their incendiary performances of late 1979 and 1980, the compilation also includes a bonus DVD featuring film footage shot by legendary director Don Letts.

The bulk of the salvaged live recordings comprise brawling versions of songs taken from the band’s recently reissued second studio album For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? The collection also features the previously unreleased 73 Shadow Street, and a surprise mutation of the Glaxo Babies’ Shake The Foundation.

The Boys Whose Head Exploded will be released through Freaks R Us on Friday 27th May 2016.

The accompanying film footage is a short feature that’s been hiding in Don Letts’ punk rock archives for the past 35 years. Filmed by Letts at Alexandra Palace on June 15th 1980 at an all day festival that featured the likes of John Cooper Clarke, The Raincoats and The Slits, the rare footage encapsulates the band’s molotov cocktail of punk, funk, free jazz and radical politics at its most artistically concussive.

The vinyl edition comes as a picture disc with a download code to access the film and hi-res audio content. The CD edition includes a DVD of the 1980 footage and a 12 page poster.

Spitting into the wind, but I'm always amazed that Sager is as off the radar as he is. This is actually one of my favorite songs in the world, period.

Cool, Stewart's appearance on the Watt podcast last yr was awesome. I can't believe those two haven't hooked up for a record or proj or something.

I've always thought that Y was the second album, after How Much Longer... And I've learned otherwise and yet still I forget. I think it's because Y's so... weird and free? It kind of reminds me of the difference between the first and second Alternative TV albums. But backwards.

There's also the We Are Time compilation of Peel Session and live stuff dating from around the time of Y. & that's now got a companion volume though it should have just been put on the same cd Cabinet of Curiosities.

I thought Honeymoon On Mars was a massive improvement on Citizen Zombie - it didn't have as much of the oppression but a lot of space, almost like a dub electronica record (and I guess showing the influence of Dennis Bovell and Hank Shocklee in the production).

I bought a copy of "Y" on CD in the 90s and it didn't make much sense. I would revisit it every few years and now I love it, even picked up the odds and sods "We Are All Prostitutes" comp as a supplement. Not too keen on later material though there's good bits along the way.

I think I picked up Y and a scratched up version of Beefheart's Lick My Decals Off in the same purchase thanks to comparisons in Birthday party features in early 8-0s NMEs that my brother had. think I picked up on Pere ubu from the same source, it just took me longer to get hold of their material.

But have loved Y since then.
