The worst band ever? Possibly maybe. The most popular band in dental offices? Definitely.

I still associate them with the Freedom Rock tv commercial I saw on a regular basis in high school. "A Horse With No Name" is a thorn in my side.

"Hey, what's this man?"
"It's Freedom Rock, man."
"Well...turn it up, man!"

paul, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

For some ungodly reason I think the guitar solo in "Horse With No Name" is pleasant and likeable. But the lyrics- urgh. There were PLANTS AND ROCKS AND BIRDS AND ALL SORTS OF CRAZY SHIT, MANG!

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Randy Newman on "A Horse With No Name" ("It's a song about a kid who thinks he's taken acid") = best thing any musician's said about someone else's music EVAH

(second-best is also Newman's: he characterized Kenny Loggins as "a seal" for his nonstop onstage handclapping)

M Matos, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The amount of times I've listened to "Tin Man" in the last month would be embarrassing if I cared aboot things like that.

I've always thought it was funny how "Horse With No Name" gets knocked as a Neil Young rip off, considering the album it's from knocked Neil Young's only number one album out of the top spot. Obviously people preferred it to the real thing.

Victor Michael Phunkus, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

is it rich hall who said of "horse with no name" that if you're stuck in a desert with a nameless horse - JUST NAME THE BLOODY HORSE...

commonswings, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

rich hall haha => he makes america look like beethoven x 5 on stilts in a luminous aquarium with dancing crawfish also on stilts (only smaller obv)

mark s, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Everytime I hear them I think of that episode of News Radio where Dave sings "Horse with No Name" into that mini-ca--ah nevermind...

Keiko, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic. But Janet didn't screw up Ventura Highway; her song was one of the best pop songs of last year, if not ever. Why does everyone act like it does bad by America (or Satie, hell), when it's GENIUS and PERFECT.

Dan I., Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe I'm a philistine, but America is one of those bands where whenever I see their greatest hits album, I think "Whoa, an album with only one song it."

Nick A., Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Obviously people preferred it to the real thing." Yeah, and Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" knocked "When Doves Cry" out of the top spot. Obviously people preferred it to the real thing.

J Blount, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

let's be mean about rich hall instead = he deserves it far more than america

mark s, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

And that Janet single was easily the best thing she's done in years.

J Blount, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

He was a hero when I was small. A youthful mistake.

Traveling on California's "Ventura Highway" on a sunny day singing America's song was great! Their "Tin Man" is the best!

I think America's band members are at least skilled with instruments, the lyrics in some of their songs surely could be worked out a little, such as in "Horse with no Name", "the heat was hot"??? did i hear that, or "...rocks and things.." alright then but they know their sound, and that is great.

Can anyone explain The Pigeon Song?

"Well I had me a pigeon

By the name of Fred

But I done shot him

In the head

Had me a dog

He was my best friend

But to him

I done put an end

Had me a farm

Sittin' free on the hill

But if you look

You'll see it ain't there still

I don't know why I done it

Honest it ain't like me

I'm not sad now I done it

'Cause a baby boy has got to be free"

uhh... what?

"Donkey Jaw" is a great America song. Jammin on the acoustic guit's. If the only America songs you know are from their greatest hits, do yourself a favor and buy their first record. It's the non- hits that live longest.

Dave225, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The King Singer's do a wicked version of "Horse With No Name".

Winkelmann, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

America was just three talented, creative guys. They were genuine about thier music, they composed and arranged avery note of it. They had FUN doing that old shite. You can hear it in the music. THAT's why Janet liked it and grooved on it. America is fun to laugh at (poster children for potheads everywhere). But they contributed original works.

Artists like Janet Jackson and Vanilla Ice recycle music written by others. They do this because they CAN. Most of their audience is ignorant of the original art. I have much less respect for sampling.

Still I'm glad those old hippies got PAID. They get royalties anytime Janet's derivative ditty gets played. WTG America!

Guys, who gives a fuck about "Horse With No Name." Their finest hour is obviously "Sister Golden Hair."

emily, "horse with no name" is one of the best singles evah.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 5 February 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm old enuff to kinda remember when they were big--I admit it. And at the time, I liked "Horse with No Name" like every other person at the roller rink. What a great Neil Young bastardization. And I remember liking "Ventura Highway" too--fine use of major seventh chords!

But "Tin Man," yikes, what is that shit? "Sister Golden Hair" ditto. The worst sort of '70s crap.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 5 February 2005 22:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Sister Golden Hair is like "hey, we can still play, but now we don't just kind of chant retarded crap over the music, we like, wrote some lyrics and melodies for said lyrics to follow."

You hear about the new album coming out tomorrow?

The personnel involved in the recording and production of Here & Now departs sharply from previous projects and represents an effort to reconnect with fresh, young talent. The album is co-produced by James Iha (formerly of Smashing Pumpkins) and Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains Of Wayne and Ivy). Guest artists include Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, Jim James and Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket, Matthew Caws and Ira Elliot of Nada Surf, Mark Rozzo of Maplewood, and longtime collaborator and friend Stephen Bishop. Cover songs include "Indian Summer" (Morningwood), "Golden" (My Morning Jacket), and "Always Love" (Nada Surf).

They just played on Letterman tonight with Adams & Kweller.

"Horse With No Name" is great. Maybe not sophisticated, or brilliant. But definitely a great song.

Mordechai Shinefield (Mordy), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

by gum, marmot, you're right! seriously, i revived this thread simply b/c i heard (captain & tenille's) "muskrat love" playing in the local drug store and i thought that it would be amusing.

"work to do," the one song on the album that has a sole adam schlesinger songwriting credit, is basically a great, poppy fountains of wayne yacht-rock number. add a little bit of a head-cold to the lead vocal and i might even have believed it is in fact fountains of wayne. most everything else on the album seems kind of blah so far, but i'm inclined to give it some time.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Randy Newman was hilariously OTM but I still think "Horse" is a great little "pop confection" or whatever they call it, dopey lyrics and meagre 2-note melody included. I just like it lopes along, bass & bongos & the simplest two-chord guitar part you can imagine. Liked it as a 5-year old (with pretty good taste) and still enjoy it enough to make it Exhibit A in a truly frivolous thread I'm gonna start today (when I find the time...)

No worse than almost any Barney Sumner lyric. Seals and Crofts are better than America. Summer Breeze is an awesome summer pop single. Yacht rock at its finest.

"sister golden hair, yeah, cool, but what about YOU CAN DO MAGIC??"

yeah, that was their big comeback hit from 1982. one member left, they had shrunken down to a duo and hadnt had a hit single in a while when they reappeared with this tune. and unlike all the other yacht-rockers who were still hanging on by then, they didnt try to update their sound with mild "80s rock" touches (linda ronstadt's "get closer" comes to mind) - this basically coulda been one of their long string of seventies hits.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 03:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Then I listened to the album.

This sentence should really never appear in a professional music review.

"they didnt try to update their sound with mild "80s rock" touches"

"I dunno, seen the video lately?"

I was talkin' about their SOUND, not their LOOK! :-)

(although to be truthful, all the two front guys did by then was cut their hair, so they didnt change much!)

one year passes...

Love "Sister Golden Hair" and "Ventura Highway" .. and lately I've really been enjoying "You Can Do Magic" .. and I have guilty pleasure love for a few of their sappier songs ("I Need You," "Lonely People"..)

For these few moments of brilliance, I say they're classic.
