An incredible musical discovery -- and some really mindblowing grooves from a previously untapped source! As the title implies, Panama's a real crossroads of musical styles -- bits of Latin, funk, and other Caribbean influences -- all simmering together in the hot sun of the Isthmus, cooking up in grooves that are totally unique! The style here is still funk-based enough to appeal to fans of African or Brazilian grooves from the same period -- but there's lots of unusual instrumental touches, twists, and turns that really make these tracks sparkle -- a bit like some of the work from Belize on Numero's groundbreaking collection! As always with Soundway, the collection of tracks is no mistake -- and each tune is presented with notes on the material and other helpful details -- all to enforce the groove-conscious collection of music! Plenty funky throughout.

I knew this was coming out, but that's about it. A lot of people claim it was the first place where Spanish language reggae was produced (notably by El General), proto-reggaeton. (Some Panamanians apparently say that the Colombians did Spanish reggae before Panama did.) Otherwise, Panama produces some good soneros, notably Ruben Blades and Azuquita (but also some others, I think, that I can't think of so quickly). Aside from El General and some Panamanian salseros, I don't know anything. I don't recognize any of those names.

i've got an unhealthy taste for comps like this, ones with titles like heading in the right direction: soul-jazz from australia 1973-1978 or tilling the soil: funk on the great plains 1968-1977 or how you say...groovy? organ jazz from the soviet union, 1959-1971

It's almost worth a thread to make up fake comp titles like those! The Panamanian one sounds great -- I heard some great stuff on jukeboxes & radio there in the early 80s, but the one cassette I bought during my two weeks there fell victim to a boombox long ago. It was mostly salsa, but other styles, too. The Exciters were one of the bands on it.

It's focused on Panamanian salsa, but I think it does delve into some other types of music as well. Of course, if we all knew Spanish we would probably know a little bit more about Panamanian music than we do (or at least know where to go to find out more).

This comp indeed looks great.

They're up to Vol 3 in the London is the Place for Me series -- I've not heard it but it looks like it'll be as good as the other two, which are fantastic.

At a quick listen to these audio clips, I want the CD, but I'd also say some of this sounds like early salsa, or late mambo, and some of it sounds like boogaloo. Sounds pretty fabulous overall. If you like this, you might like some Joe Cuba. Some of it also reminds me of the type of things on Lost Classics of Salsa, Vol. 1, which is good.

Also, I see that Pura Salsa by Azuquita (who is originally from Panama) has been reissued, and if you like the type of stuff that seems to be on Panama!, you might also like that. It's from the mid-70s but it still sort of splits the difference between salsa and boogaloo/Latin salsa (despite its title). I'm not sure how distinctly Panamanian it is (I think it's the usual bunch of Fania musicians), but Azuquita is worth checking out.
