Everything but that ramped-up guitar part towards the end.

What is that album Sylvia Robinson was involved in where they covered "Lowdown"? It's in the record collection, but I forget. It has "Automatic Lover" on it too.

Sampled:

* "Lowdown"
Fresh Kid Ice - "Long Dick Chinese"
Leaders of the New School - "The International Zone Coaster"
Sparky D - "Throwdown"

Fucking goddamned classic amongst classics. Especially the moment right before the bridge when he lifts the melody to the sky.

love "lowdown." been listening to it fairly regularly lately, actually.

I just started a thread about this on another board.

I always thought this was song by some black 70s soul legend. I couldn't believe it when I found out it was Boz Scaggs. It's fabulous.

Larry King-approved stone-cold classic

That part where the horns explode (the baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaweeaaaaaah [bow bow bow] part is among my favorite few seconds in all of music, but I can't really stand any of the rest of the dude's music.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Total classic, as is much of that album ("Lido Shuffle," "What Can I Say," "It's Over," "We're All Alone"). Bass pops by David Hungate! Jeff Porcaro on drums! Awesome.

Sorry - not "It's Over" (though it's OK). I meant "Georgia."

This is a great track, but Ben Sidran scaled better heights.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:52 (eighteen years ago) link

stormy, do you have any Sidran? my buddy's been telling me to pick up his album "Feel Your Groove" forever. he says it's that folky soul shit that i love, but i've never found it.

JAXON (jaxon), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't Sidran do "On the Cool Side"? That's one of the greatest crimes against music anywhere.

"Lowdown" however, like the entirety of "Silk Degrees," is completely awesome.

Yeah, his two Blue Thumb lps! but only on LP though. If I ever work out how to digitize (um, been meaning to do this for like two years; oh well, weekend comes and me wanna get annihilated) I would put them up on noize ysi or something.

I mean, they aren't brilliant or anything, but there are definitely some reet blunted-out grooves on those things that you wouldn't necessarily associate with the name. *Especially* the great lenghty "Now I Live (and Now my Life is Done)" -- that's a tour de force. some crazy mug sampled it too, I think; I can't remember who. It's on Putting in time on the Planet Earth...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Puttin' in time on Planet Earth: (Blue Thumb 1973)
* "Walking with the Blues"
Atmosphere - "It Goes"

Man, what the fuck is up w/gemm.com pricing? do people really not want to sell their records? 90$?! fuck that. (although there is a cheaper one, i'm not buying records right now)

Maybe this is well known, but I had no idea:

According to the DVD commentary for Saturday Night Fever, the producers intended to use the song "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs in the rehearsal scene between Tony and Stephanie in the dance studio, and choreographed their dance moves to the song. [...] As John Travolta asserted, "The Bee Gees weren't even involved in the movie in the beginning ... I was dancing to Stevie Wonder and Boz Scaggs."

I wonder if Joanna levesque or Joel Hailey knows that song? Jonathan Richman most likely would not care for it…
