The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 14 October 2022 21:48 (one year ago) link

Dunno if this is anywhere near top tier, but (so far) as a collection of songs recorded and sequenced, it’s at least easy to listen through without wincing hard/skipping through/eyes rolling out of my head. It’s been a really long time since a M.I.A. album accomplished that for me as a listener.

She's the original Azealia Banks

raven, Saturday, 15 October 2022 01:14 (one year ago) link

Even her, like, dissociated drawly delivery suggests profound irresponsibility. Chaos is the brand.

treeship., Saturday, 15 October 2022 01:17 (one year ago) link

A very problematic idea of “cool” for sure, as ilx discussed at length in like 2006 or something

treeship., Saturday, 15 October 2022 01:18 (one year ago) link

She cites the example of the movement to defund the police in the US, suggesting that this will cause poverty and hardship. “Even [with] the police force, who we’re supposed to not like, you had people losing their livelihoods and losing their jobs and can’t pay rent, families losing their houses because they’re threatened with this choice of following orders or not following orders,” she says. “That is actually really happening on our doorstep, like this is not happening in Sri Lanka, this is happening in the west, this is happening in your neighbourhood.”

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 October 2022 04:24 (one year ago) link

I agree with the consensus, it's a good M.I.A. record with some classic M.I.A. bangers. Sometimes too obvious or redundant, but at least there's no track called "Lab Leak Theory" or anything. My son actually put it on in the car this morning, I wasn't even aware it was out. It's funny, he loved M.I.A. and "Bird Flu" in particular when he was like 3. But he's only recently circled back around to her, he thinks she's interesting. We both thought it was pretty good.

OH GOOD.

tbh M.I.A.'s shtick/persona has always been this amoral global hustler, and Candace Owens is that.

Nah, if that was the case she'd be posing for pictures with Gary Vaynerchuck. Candace Owens may be a grifter, but her specific grift is reactionary politics and grudge warfare. By positioning herself with Owens, M.I.A. is branding herself as a reactionary culture-war asshole, full stop.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 31 October 2022 15:10 (one year ago) link

Yeah “global hustler” sure but “amoral” no way, her personal has always been founded on scolding “ARE YOU EVEN AWARE THAT” lectures delivered from a perceived moral high ground.

Watch out Joanna Newsom

the ultimate empty posturing coward, not that her bonafides in standing up for the downtrodden ever felt real to me but it's so much easier to step aside, say nothing, and just #freespeech her way thru social media.

why do vaguely leftish conspiracy minded spiritual stoner types keep moving in the same fashy direction it's extremely disconcerting

your original display name is still visible (Left), Friday, 4 November 2022 18:36 (one year ago) link

the 'spiritual stoner' part, means they believe in homeopathic nonsense treatments, tend to go w/ gut over facts, listen to Earth all day

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 4 November 2022 18:38 (one year ago) link

I think it's more people that want to seem edgy and countercultural-ish but don't necessarily reach too far beyond that

she had somewhat of a hook with her dad, but I don't know that any of her audience really engaged with that at all (or bothered to understand what any of that meant) but, to be fair, I am not sure she was all that invested either!

mh, Friday, 4 November 2022 19:00 (one year ago) link

wasn't there an interview in 2010 where she admitted she was ignorant but said why can't ignorant people be political

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 4 November 2022 19:01 (one year ago) link

in theory, why not

I feel like the whole spiritual stoner field has been appropriated wholesale by the right in recent years. but maybe it's always tended that way since blavatsky

I was the part of the audience who thought her dad's politics gave her some cred despite knowing nothing about sri lanka so that angle certainly worked on me when I was 15
