I don't have that one, but can I just say KC=fucking lost god of 90s house.

Hallelujah, Raw Grooves, stone classic.

"Winter's Blessing" is just completely sublime. It's perfect deep house.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

He's got a new-ish one out on Nite Grooves called 'Bar A Thym' that is completely different than his deep house stuff. Pretty pumping techy-house with a floor-destroying filtered synth melody that just keeps intensifying the whole way through. It's the latest song I've been sufficiently moved enough by to run up and trainspot it. Listen here:

Which reminds one of Rozzo (Bush/Ladomat in the 90s). I notice many house DJs & producers "rediscovering" techno at the mo' (this track's great anyway).

As I'm leaving dark beats and sample loops behind like a born-again disco/househead.

seconded...it's kind of strange, but maybe not given the popularity of electro-house and all things german.

"bar-a-rhythm" is great house music through and through though. more cowbell!! it reminds me of morris day and the time.

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I also had a convo with an experienced deep, deep, deep house producer whose output is even veering towards ""world music"" now. Globetrotting and recording session musicians of all kinds.

So what are you listening to these days, I ask ? He says, current electro. WTF lol

so the new(ish) one, invaders, is treading similar groud to bar-a-thym, but i think, after a few plays, i like it perhaps more.

Still the best.

Single of the (last) year is "In The Morning," if only for his langorous way of moaning "I'm so ... fucking ... into you."

What's really neat is how fantastic he is at that corny "world music" flavor dance music mentioned upthread as well, without it sounding totally boutique. "Deconstructed House" and "Intro" (which can be DLed at his Web site) are really lush and nice.

Eric H., Friday, 18 May 2007 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

And then there are his pot trax.

Eric H., Friday, 18 May 2007 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Finally heard "Invader" and indeed it does resemble "Bar-a-thym" and is maybe as nice. It'd be hard to top as "Bar-a-thym" is definitely one of THE jump-up-and-down-oh-lawdy-I-can't-get-enough-of-this tracks of this decade for me.

"In the Morning" (the raw final mix one) is still in my every day rotation. It is clearly one of the most luxurious house trax evah.

Eric H., Saturday, 21 July 2007 07:04 (fifteen years ago) link

haven't been able to get "Mental Moonlight Fiesta" out of my head for a couple days now for some reason. Strumming in my head and mindlessly la-la-la-ing not unlike that awful Paul Johnson hit record (down, down, down etc. make it stop! shut up shut up!) of a few years ago, minus the corny.

I am semi-obsessed with 'Stompin' Grounds' (by K.C.Y.C.) at the moment.

hate to be a noob, but can we do a s&d of his 90s stuff. when he was kerri caoz 6:23 or whatever.

are these good:

http://www.discogs.com/release/70829

what is the raw grooves series like?

anyone feeling the new one, 'kong'/'pong'?

r1o natsume, Thursday, 6 March 2008 00:10 (fourteen years ago) link

good questions all round. some of the b-side instrumentals on those mid-90's king street 12"s are pretty great as far as i can remember. '623 beats' on this release (i think) absolutely kills it: http://www.discogs.com/release/14902 lots of dubbiness and zinging hi-hats, great stuff.

sounds like kerri had been listening to a lot of king tubby around that time.

sam500, Thursday, 6 March 2008 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

how do they compare to the 'atmosphere' record? where do i go for the tuff garage beats, deep chords and jazzy soloing? ie. what is his trackiest stuff from that period? or is it all like that?

r1o natsume, Thursday, 6 March 2008 01:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm afraid i haven't heard enough of his stuff from that period to give a qualified answer. what i do have is locked up in my parents basement 8,000km away. what i can say is that you have to be a little bit selective in that some of his stuff slots into that generic US garage style (with a kerri twist of course) - which i'm not really into. love some of the b-side dubs though.

sam500, Thursday, 6 March 2008 01:42 (fourteen years ago) link

how reliable is the king st label btw? i have dug the recent dennis ferrer releases and keep seeing records from the label at my local record exchange. i should just stop being a coward and buy some at random, but i have been bitten too many times by bad downtempo records (looking at you ian pooley)

r1o natsume, Thursday, 6 March 2008 01:44 (fourteen years ago) link

the fingerprintz record is so great! fingerprintz 2 is also good but not as hard sounding. you should definitely check out a basement, a red light, and a feeling. it's a madhouse label comp with different vocalists over his productions. it turned me on to KC in the most major way. it's got deep and tough garage productions, jazzy walking-bassline house, and his grampa sings on one cut.

i would also check this record he did for movin' records: http://www.discogs.com/release/48561

the panic ep? that one is good.

i've only heard the first raw grooves and it's excellent, with some serious basslines.

Slept on "I Think of You" until just now, but it's stunning. Sort of like a warmer, vocal version of "Light the World."

Again I ask, do I shell out $15 to see him tonight? I am tempted to do so in very real way, but there are also other things going on that are infinitely more cheap...

the original mix of "rain" has to be one of the best house tracks ever made. i love how it sounds so languorous yet giddy and restless at the same time. and such an amazing bassline

the later vocal mix that ramps up the melancholy is worth a look as well
