BIG FUCK OFF DRUMS

yes, wonderful song. Rich Harrison is on fire right now. (he also did "Crazy In Love" and it totally shows)

also, she is HAWT

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:10 (nineteen years ago) link

(this is great, yup. When does it come out in the UK? Amerie's never really had a proper hit over here)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I didn't know it was the same cat who did the Beyonce tune. Yeah thats really obvious though. I just can't say enough about all the vocals in there. I love the part where it sounds like she's saying "gobble gobble gobble" and of course that part in the middle where they layer the vocals and make some really cool chords out of all the harmonies. Gene Yuss.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:13 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, and he did Destiny's "Soldier" which is another of my faves lately

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:20 (nineteen years ago) link

it's all about DING DONG DING DONG DING

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I love the part where it sounds like she's saying "gobble gobble gobble"

I thought that, too!! It's great, she sounds like a turkey that swallowed a melodica!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:23 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a 30 sec clip of the video here. This is going to be huge, isn't it?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:23 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't give Rich too much credit, because he also did that really annoying new j.lo/usher beat with the fucking looping horn.

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm.. "Soldier" is definitely another great vocal track. Great song actually. But the beat is DEAD. Its ironic considering how much he brought the music in "1 Thing" to life.

Its already huge! I see this video every time I turn on the TV.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I should watch TV more.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Amerie's never really had a proper hit over here

Not really here, either -- she's never cracked the top 20, at least.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:26 (nineteen years ago) link

("Why Don't We Fall in Love" peaked at #23.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:26 (nineteen years ago) link

It also sounds EXACTLY like "Get Right" and a thousand other monotone singer BADASS KILLA DRUMLINE songs.
I love it to death and have probably listened to it forty times to day.
DINGDONGDINGDONG DING!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't even watch much TV at all. Its just played every 30 minutes on BET cause its tied in with that new Will Smith movie. Thats prolly helping her out a bit.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:27 (nineteen years ago) link

This is some definite barnburner shit. The best part is when the strings swell towards the end.

Matt Chesnut, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:27 (nineteen years ago) link

it's just about to crack the top 40 (at 45 last I checked), which makes me so happy. it was a white label at first, like 3 months ago, and the label tried to supress it because J.Lo wanted this track to be her first single (which is why she ended up with one of Usher's leftovers). I'm glad Amerie prevailed, J.Lo woulda ruined it.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:28 (nineteen years ago) link

also apparently the drums are sampled from "Oh, Calcutta" by the Meters, which surprised me -- RH is from DC and has played in Go-Go bands, so I almost assumed it was just a sped-up Go-Go track (which is what it sounds like, esp. w/ that woodblock).

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Why is the internet (or me) so crap when it comes to finding out when a record is going to be released (in the UK)? I know I don't really need to know, but I want to now.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Ridiculously good. Must be number one for months.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it possible we'll all hate it by the end of the summer?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:39 (nineteen years ago) link

The bast part is that vocal loop. Oh-oH Oh-Oh OH (Oh Oh Oh)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Al: great info there! I LOVE Get Right, but it would greatly benefit from a lack of Jello.

I also love the subtle vibes at the tracks end and the slight scratchy quality of the vocals at the start that begins to loosen as the song continues.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah Brainwasher. That part you're talking about is great. I'm sitting here seriously racking my brain trying to think of ANY other song I've heard where the vocals were produced in such a kick-ass fashion. And produced is the key word there of course. I'm blown away by this song. I'm not usually BLOWN AWAY by new songs that often either.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:49 (nineteen years ago) link

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Nah.

There's a lo-fi mp3 of another new Amerie track 'Talkin' About' at http://www.ohamerie.com/

They also say they have a hi-res video of '1 Thing' at http://www.ohamerie.com/video/, but I haven't tried it yet (and the lo-res wmv one has no picture on my player).

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:24 (nineteen years ago) link

this is easily my single of the year so far, btw. it's ridiculously fantastic, it deserves to own the world. better than "crazy in love" or all of j-lo's stuff combined.

and forksclovetofu = otm about the gushy ending.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:05 (nineteen years ago) link

also, it makes me really happy to know that j-lo wanted this and didn't get it.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:10 (nineteen years ago) link

This song could not have happened with J-Lo. You couldn't do those kinds of things with her voice. Jennifer Lopez and her dumb fat ass can fuck off.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Even for a movie tie-in, that video is seaux haute.

Matt Chesnut, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"also, it makes me really happy to know that j-lo wanted this and didn't get it."

Is this true? Amerie's voice is so pretty, and J-Lo's voice is fucking nails on a chalkboard. Give her ALL of J-Lo's songs from now on.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm afraid that this song will not sit well with me after overexposure. But for now, I adore "1 Thing."

Can I just say, while I Love 1 Thing, I still think Get Right is pretty fantastic - especially for the extended breakdown.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Single of the year. I love this song so much - the little guitar stabs and the "DING DONG DING DONG DING!"

I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so great - maybe how it seems like there's a Jay-Z-style guest verse right around the corner, but it never actually comes? (The Juelz Santana remix isn't bad, but I'll take the original every time.)

Amerie is so good. I have no problems with a scenario in which this song is "Crazy in Love"-level inescapable.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so great - maybe how it seems like there's a Jay-Z-style guest verse right around the corner, but it never actually comes?

Ha ha - spot on.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:33 (nineteen years ago) link

in a shock move I adore this song! The mid point between "Get Right" and "Crazy In Love" (it's remarkable how much it sounds like "Get Right", actually, and while I love "Get Right" it also makes me realise how much better it would be if Amerie had sung it instead of J-Lo). Is there a consensus on how to pronounce Amerie yet? AAH-merie? AY-merie? A-merie?

the Bobby Valentino song is hot too, so swoonsome.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:12 (nineteen years ago) link

AM-erie (rhymes with scam), if Juelz is to be believed in the intro to the remix.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

BTW, the song is on the Hitch sundtrack that has been out for almost a month in the US and is getting a Euro release next week.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, "Slow Down" is great. I like how it has the same drums that were on Timbo & Magoo's "Cop That Shit" and the Britney/Ying Yang song (way better than either of those, though). I think the song was big in ATL before Luda signed him to DTP.

the official word is that Eve will be on the "1 Thing" remix.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

...and er it still doesnt sound anything like 1 thing?

super obvious answer = amerie 'talkin about' off the same album, hot as hell but too close to 1 thing to ever get some shine; or even better yet 'loves off the chain', a stupendous unreleased classic tacked onto the 'touch' promo, and with its own weird danny krivit re-edit 12. u can trawl thru the lost richcraft archives all day long for similar kicks, janet jackson - 'pops up', mary j blige's 'out my head'... jennifer lopez 'whatever u wanna do' as well, shadowing 'get right'....

non richcrafts to greater / lesser xtent

lil mo - dem boyz
nicole wray - if i was your girlfriend
rihanna - let me
yummy bingham from tha rayne/ jadakiss - 'come and get it' (sorta)

ummmm

good call with Lil Mo's "Dem Boyz." actually, Chucky Thompson productions in general, since he was kinda the proto-Rich Harrison.

it's kind of a bummer that "Jiggle It" might cross over outside of Baltimore, I guess Young Leek is the new B. Rich.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:47 (eighteen years ago) link

i've never heard of b-rich, but young leek has a proper 12 on def jam u can buy in shops and stuff. he's the new j-kwon if anything!

ohh ok i didnt know that wz chucky thompson. yeah, his and faith evans 'mesmerized' cd fit in here too at a pinch, i'm not sure what else

rtcotm (mwah), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:58 (eighteen years ago) link

B. Rich was a one hit wonder circa '02, "Woah Now" was on BET all the time but I don't know how much radio play it got in other places.

Young Leek got signed last year after having that one song out for like a month, so people around here are pretty mad about it. but the producer of that track, Blaq Starr, has done a ton of Baltimore club hits.

Anyone else heard "Take Control"?

Basically, it sounds kinda like "1 Thing", but less minimal and less good, but you probably already guessed that. Of course, there's a lot of room between "1 Thing" and "bad", and this falls somewhere in there. Rich Harrison is Rich Harrison, (or someone else is Rich Harrison, that's been happening a lot lately) big horns, extraneous percussion, etc. I like the dark surf guitar and the use of the male background vocals. (That whole pre-chorus section is a nice build.) Amerie's singing is more soul shouter-ly than usual (which in my book is a plus, though I realize a lot of ILMers don't like soul shouters, but boo to them). The best moment is at the begining of the second verse. "I gotta tell you how much I love it/ When you kiss my neck in public/ I try my best not to blush" and totally sings that last line with a blush. The song needs more a hook though.
