(x-post):( really? That's too bad, although I'm not sure I would have wanted to stay out super late anyway.

nah, it WAS a DJ thought... pretty rockin', imo

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

what kinda stuff did he play? anything at all like the hollertronix stuff?

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:14 (nineteen years ago) link

that's supposed to say DJ set, rather than DJ thought. anyhow, wasn't totally familiar with the stuff he was playing but i left real early.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:23 (nineteen years ago) link

well what styles? dancehall, southern hip hop, baltimore, mashups? that's the stuff Hollertronix are known to play, but his album is pretty different.

for what it is (a post-Shadow type thing) i think it's pretty good. the songs with vocals are all pretty good. the vybz track is great and surprisingly, i heard that one song with the naked lady video (Indian Thick Jawns) and it was instrumental, slow and kinda boring, but for the album, he speeds it up and adds JUPITER from Freestyle Fellowship and it's actually really good.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, in that case, definitely a good spread of stuff... dancehall, some indie, i think i heard one of the M.I.A. tracks.. and that's just in the first hour or so...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

he played this MIA track over the freek-a-leek beat then later dropped galangalang. towards the end he played some of the favela shit. He had a little series of federation joints.

the first half of the show he was having technical difficulties. One turntable took a shit like his 3rd song in and then the sound was all low and muffled. They switched the table out but couldn't figure out what was up with the sound. Fucking turns out someone didn't turn on one of the amps so around 12:30 someone finally pushed a button and shit got cute.

jupiter from freestylefellowship??? sorry dude but that was Peace. word is that the song was suppose to have David Banner on it but he wanted to much money

SergDun (SergDun), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, i guess technically 'the first hour' that i mention was actually the hour i was there, which was around 12-ish so i missed the rough bits...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

sorry, you're right. it was PEACE

i saw diplo here in toronto last night. the crowd was pretty thin but a lot more people were dancing by the end of the night, which was nice. he mostly did mashup-type stuff, exactly what you'd expect from his mixes, and some of the blends were so good it was ridiculous. highlights: the m.i.a. tracks, some wicked dizzee a capellas, some favela funk stuff, and a 20 minute hip-hop set with "nolia clap", "go dj", "knuck if you buck" and "drop it like it's hot"! by the best blend of the night by far was destiny's child's "lose my breath" (which has REALLY grown on me, btw) with "da funk"! it was ridiculously great, and had he dropped it at the end of the night instead of at the beginning, it would have absolutely killed.

they were also selling the mia bootleg for $10, which pissed me off cause my turntable lab order ($25 after shipping) had literally just come in that afternoon. i consoled myself by buying his other bootleg, a favela funk classics thing, which i will report on right after i check soulseek for this destiny's child track.

anyway, if you're on the bubble about seeing him, go! fun fun fun.

i'll most likely be doing that tonight!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:48 (nineteen years ago) link

i hope the montreal crowd is better than the toronto crowd, although, to be fair, the $15 cover was pretty steep.

no sign of the destiny's child/daft punk thing btw. :(

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

it was good and fun, though i didn't stay for the whole thing. much as mark p described above. but the crowd was moving. and it was only $10.

he was more into a cool playlist and startling transitions (my favorite: “Move Bitch” into “Love Cats”) as opposed to sustaining a groove for a long time

twelve years pass...

https://www.gq.com/story/diplo-africa-tour-interview

Yeah, me and this producer, E-kelly, did a song for Mr Eazi. Before I left, I was like, Hey, this is an idea for a song. I gave him the stems—the music for the beat. Then I land and he's already sent me three demo versions with new drums. And Skales has already done a new version of “Run Up” with new guitars. The records were voiced and mixed. I've never seen people so hungry and the quality so high. In America, I can't get Travis Scott to answer my text messages. I gotta go pour water on his face to wake him up and get him to voice a song. I don't mind doing that, but I also don't mind being here on the frontier, making music with all the Nigerians.

...

I'd never been to Africa, besides South Africa, and everybody in South Africa calls it fake Africa.

"Everybody"...uh

the real heat is in rihanna's effortless diss imo

So how do you get something to Rihanna?
I just want her on a Major Lazer song. She's like the one artist that we can't ever get.

Rihanna and Major Lazer seem well aligned.
I think before we're all done, she'll be on a song of ours. Hopefully. But if not, I don't really care. I played her “Lean On.” She was like, I don't do house music. I face-palmed so hard on that one. Another time I had a session with her, and Future was also invited. The Weeknd was there. Metro Boomin was there before anybody knew who he was. I was so contact high. Future played her, like, 700 songs. It was four in the morning. Finally, I was like, Yo, G, I'm leaving unless you let me play her a song. So I played her a song. And she was like, This sounds like a reggae song at an airport. [laughs] I was like, I'm gonna go kill myself.
