I quite like Muse for their total over-the-top barouqueness. Being over eighteen and not Russian, I realise I am in a minority.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:44 (nineteen years ago) link

They are, apparently, about go to top 10 with the fourth single off a year-old album in a quiet singles week. So they are undoubtedly popular.

I like them, anyway, even if I am incapable of explaining why this is. Maybe with their pretentious, po-faced stupidity they've gone so far off the scale of things that I should hate that they've emerged at the other side?

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:44 (nineteen years ago) link

They seem to be an inbetween band, sitting somewhere between indie and metal. They seem to have all of the drawbacks and none of the benefits of either genre, I think they are popular because they don't fit with any particular tribe, and so have created their own. Their fan base will never either shrink or expand, they offer community and solidarity to those who need a central uncompicated ancor for their musical life, and for their social interactions. Wooden, we are no longer mates!

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

The single that's coming out has some software on it where you can create your own mix of the track. I think they're the first band to do it, and it sounds like a pretty neat concept.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

software.. it is to be commended trying something new

i could remove the hideous guitar vnwyngiysyie malmsteem or whatever the f**** it is pomposity, and the vocals?

maybe there would be a cool rhythm track in there.

I'll look out for it in charity shops ten years from now ...

I think they're the first band to do it, and it sounds like a pretty neat concept.

what? mogwai did that last year on happy songs.

as for muse: i'm gonna out myself and say i love 'em. sure, they're ridiculous, pompous, OTT indie show-offs, but fuck that: they R O C K, and that's what counts.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Mogwai did the U-Myx thing already? Well then, I've been had! Anyhow, here's a wee snippet about it.

They sound like a band that really like The Bends to me. I saw them live at Curiosa, though, and they all really excel at their instruments, for what that's worth. Bellamy (lead guy) really blew me away on piano.

I love Muse...best band on the planet with Radiohead .....the U-Myx concept is great, more artists should be using this technology so that people can recreate a particular bassline or guitair riff for influence in their own music

Johnny L, Monday, 10 January 2005 16:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I got free tickets to a show and it was pretty enjoyable. Main dude is quite a showman--OH! I was totally thinking of Pashmin4 the whole show because of that crazy keyboard pyramid he plays that lights up and such, he must've got it on discount from gary numan.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I was just listening to them last night and I fuckin love em

I saw them at T in the Park last year and they blew everyone's minds.. enormous stacks of amplifiers, sound tweaked just so. They were running out between everyone else's sets to add more speakers and play with things, for like hours, so when it finally came time for them to play it was all ready, and they switched on and it was like the entire sound system of the festival had been replaced with something twice as loud. "New Born" is phenomenal, I don't really know any of the names of their songs though, they're one of those bands like Sade or Stereolab where it doesn't really matter

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

You rockist! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

After I got past the fact that the singer is doing a bald-faced Thom Yorke impersonation, I like every song I've heard by them.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago) link

A Muse/Interpol tour would make perfect sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I like select tracks by them. For what it's worth, he's got a finer voice than Yorke could ever muster (if you're keen on overwrought bombast, that is). "Hyper Music" and "Stockhome Syndrome" are both amazing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Lyd14 and I stopped these girls so we could photograph their lineup cards (so we could know who was playing when).. they were like "who are you here to see?" And we sort of floundered around, er, Pink and the Pixies, really. We're like "who are YOU two here to see?" And they both answer in unison: "Muse"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

this is during the last song of their set, somebody else took this though, Lyd14 I guess, because I was down front trying not to get completely smushed by the heaving throngs of.. well the likes of those two above

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Amazing live band. Great noise from a 3 piece, considering only a few backing samples are used. Stuff like "Citizen Erased", "Micro Cuts" and "Butterflies & Hurricanes" knock the recorded versions (which are a bit anaemic, I think) into a cocked hat. First album largely forgettable, mind.

si carter, Monday, 10 January 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard a song by them on the radio last summer and waited for the DJ to tell who it was by. Upon hearing that it was Muse, I didn't know how to handle it because I'd written them off as crap years ago. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Muse now sounds a bit like Prince, at least vocal wise. This sounds like suicide for their fan base.

*small voice* I like Muse, I think. Actually I hadn't heard them for a long time and a good mate of mine at my old job went on and on and ON about them and how I'd love them blah blah so it put me off listening to the mp3 he sent me didnt it?

Then I heard "Stockholm Syndrome" on Rage one night and went "woah fuck thats good". So, yeah. I like the over the top baroque metal/indierock hybridangst.

I don't have anything against them, although I would have preferred if their arrangements were a bit leass heavy metal.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 8 May 2006 10:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I have never enjoyed a Muse song before, but "Supermassive Black Hole" is catchy as hell, and I have no idea why. Maybe because it reminds me of a poppy Brainiac (although I can't help thinking it would be ten times better if all of its Brainiac-y qualities were brought to the forefront).

two years pass...

I have now heard two songs by this band that I like. And the video for Knights of Cydonia is amazing.

I feel weird even asking (though I'm plenty shameless): which album should I start with?

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Origin Of Symmetry if you want 'em at their most rocking-out, Absolution if you want 'em at their most successfully ambitious.

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't be ashamed. I recently had a discussion with a friend where the topic was "good bands whom you associate with the worst music tastes" and Muse came out pretty much on top. As long as you don't prance around in their shirts or blather about how they're the greatest band of the decade or whatever, there's plenty to enjoy.

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Other 2 albums are REALLY bad, tho

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks. What's so bad about Black Holes.... The reviews make it sound like it's their best. Is it more electronic or something?

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link

It's got a couple of decent songs but it's by far their most facile, limp record. Grandstanding suits them, and it's no coincidence that the best songs on BHAR are the two where they REALLY go for it (Take A Bow and Knights Of Cydonia). I dunno, tho, maybe you'll like it more! Try it.

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'd rather hear them go for it. They sound to me like a cross between Rush and Supergrass. At least the songs I've heard so far.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Which songs have you heard?

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:20 (fifteen years ago) link

New Born (which I thought was the superior song) and the aforementioned Knights of Cydonia (which has good parts but is made much better by the visuals).

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:28 (fifteen years ago) link

New Born IS the superior song. It's the lead-off track on OOS, which is a fun, kick-ass album. If you liked it, you'll like the record.

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link

claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Honestly, I listen to plenty of groundbreaking music. I'm just curious about Muse because I heard a song that sounded good to me.

Fuck an LCD Soundsystem.

muse and queen occupy the same sphere for me: bombast that I can see why it's fun, but does nothing for me. muse are slightly less corny than queen tho, admittedly.

Austin, Thursday, 28 June 2012 02:50 (eleven years ago) link

xxp that's so bad, they could have got Vikings era Prince to do it and he'd have come up with something better.
It starts off with some anonymous national anthem, then throws in the 'ha ha ha ha' bit from 'O Superman', then some sub-Queen lyrics and a guitar solo that sounds like Brian May in a washing machine. They must surely have written this as a piss take, right? Regardless of whether they did or not, this song is probably going to be played at the opening ceremony. To a TV audience of hundreds of millions. I guess maybe the organisers wanted something more stupid than Boris Johnson at the ceremony.
We could probably get Muse to represent the UK in next year's Eurovision. They'll either win outright or lose and we'll be rid of them.
