I might've told this story here already once before, but when my brother worked at a record store a few years ago, the day a new ICP record came out, whenever some 12-year-old kid would come in to buy it, he'd grin and ask them if there were a juggalo, and they'd look down and shyly reply "yes, I'm a juggalo".

They appeal to 12 year old kids because they wear crazy costumes and sing about wrestling and sex and use the kind of language their parents told them never to say.

All males who like ICP must, by law, have an almost-grown mustache. That kind where it's just starting but you've never shaved before so you just pretend it's not there.

I bought the first album years ago to see what the big deal was. It was GODAWFUL - I sold it back, and all I remember is "She probably took a big greasy ass smelly shit", "First day out and I caught my nut", and a pre-fame Kid Rock on one of the tracks. Those were the best parts and they were terrible! Did they ever get any better?

Insane Clown Posse
Carnival of Carnage
Rating ***
1992
Review
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The Insane Clown Posse introduced themselves to the world (well, at least Detroit) with their debut album, Carnival of Carnage. It pretty much spelled out their ludicrous sex'n'drugs'n'crime'n'murder'n'Faygo'n'racism manifesto in no uncertain terms, since subtlety was never part of their agenda. All ICP wants to do is rock the house as if they were a third-rate Beastie Boys supported by a cut-rate Faith No More, all tempered with the sensibility that made GWAR cult heroes -- only with, you know, more sexism and jokes that are supposed to be street, but wind up sounding racist. So, Carnival of Carnage delivers exactly what it promises. If you're down with the ICP -- if you're a juggalo (funny how close that is to "jigaboo," isn't it?) -- you'll find that this album got them off on the right track. If you're not with them, this will certainly give you reasons to hate them.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

The entire reason why ICP works is due to Mike E Clark, who does NOT appear on _Carnival Of Carnage_ (which has two good songs, "Wizard In The Hood" and "Red Neck Hoe", one of which is only "good" because of the sheer audacity in making the hook to your song "Bitch, you's a hoe/And hoe, you's a bitch").

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Both _Ringmaster_ and _Riddlebox_ are much, much better.

Strange how this still doesn't make me want to buy any more ICP.

I would check out some of the following songs if possible:

From _Ringmaster_: "Murder Go Round", "Who Are You", "The Dead One", "My Fun House", "The Loons", "Wagon Wagon", "One For The Maggots", "Mr Johnson's Head"

From _Riddlebox_: "The Show Must Go On", "My Toybox", "12", "The Killing Fields", "The Joker's Wild", "I'm Coming Home", "Cemetery Girl", "Three Rings"

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Defense, from a non-Juggalo.

ICP had a great track early in their career called "Southwest Ghetto Zone." Generic slanging and banging lyrics about SW Detroit, but the beat sampled the synth line from "Do ya think I'm Sexy" and ripped.

Best lyric: I've got my nine in my gut and its starting to hurt/where can you keep a gat wearing Skidz and a t-shirt."

I think this is when the whole "Wicked Clownz" schtick was in its infancy.

As I'm getting coffee from the vending machine, Jeremy (the ICP/Slipknot fan) comes in to get more fritos.
Under my breath I start singing "I'm just a juggalo/ and everywhere I go/ no-one knows the part I'm playin'/ got a lotta sass/ an' Faygo up my ass..."
at this point he stops me and mutters "David Lee Roth is a Douchebag."
I say "Yeah, he gives me that 'not-so-fresh' feeling too."
Jeremy laughs and goes back down the cow-chute.

So...does all of Roth's post-VH work give you all that 'not-so-fresh' feeling?

You people are all hilarious in my book. First of all you are all making fun of something that you know little to nothing about. The topic started off as a question about GWAR, Slipknot, Metalica and ICP, if I am not mistaken, but somehow has not intertained either Metalica or Slipknot... not even GWAR anymore but instead has focused on the Insane Clown Posse and you all making fun of them. They have claimed to be the most hated band in the world for about ten years or so and I laugh everytime I get on the net and that is always confirmed, then I laugh even harder because ALL OF YOU that hate them think they actually care. There albums are going gold and platnum, do you really think they care what someone on the net thinks? They (namely Shaggy 2 Dope aka Joey Utsler) told Sharon Osbourne (a giant in the music business) to "buff my pickle" on the Howard stern show and when she said, do you realize who you are talking to they said yeah, we do. She said she would get their videos not played and get them taken out of magazines, but they already arent there. They ain't on MTV or any other show that is mainstream. They have done everything that they have without any help and I respect the hell outta them for that. Before you go posting and making fun of people you should know about them. It takes more talent than you think to listen to their music, yeah, they have a lot of funny songs... but they also have some really deep messages IF YOU LISTEN TO THEM, but as they said themselves... you are either with us of forget us. And as another band from the same label said in a song, "Don't let the others get a taste, and if they start to bump this go and smack 'em in the face... you's a band wagon rider giving Juggalos a bad name, we'll fxck you up for that, this ain't no fxckin game"... also... welll, no, you don't deserve anymore lyrics. I'm done.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/blog/bs-md-tattoo-beating-20140805,0,5506278.story

Two Hebron residents were charged Monday with attempted murder and assault for beating a man, attempting to carve a tattoo from his arm, and setting him on fire, police said. The victim remains in critical condition at a burn center in Baltimore, the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident occurred Monday just after 1 a.m. on the 7200 block of Rockawalkin Rd. in Hebron, police said. Officials say Paul Martin Hurst, 33, of Hebron and Cary Lee Edwards, 35, of Williamsburg, Va. began beating Zachary Swanson, 31, after an argument in the Hebron residence the three men share.

The suspects then tried to forcibly remove a tattoo from Swanson's arm, police said. After failing to remove the tattoo, the suspects set fire to the victim's arm, police said. The victim was left on the ground for several hours and suffered severe burns, police said, before he was driven to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center and subsequently flown to a burn center in Batlimore.

Both suspects have been charged with first and second degree attempted murder, first and second degree assault, reckless endangerment and a deadly weapon charge.

Officials say there is a strong possibility the suspects and the victim are connected with the Juggalos, a group of fans of the Detroit hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse. Police said the victim's tattoo was "consistent" with the fan group, which the FBI has classified as a gang.

It's less an exposé and more of an ICP thesis statement: a beautifully paced, wordless (and, thank god, without music) series of short video portraits of clown-faced juggalos in situ, self-medicating with sex, violence, drugs and family. The visuals owe something to Avedon and Arbus but the ethos is an insider perspective of post-dada nihilism that regularly lights on an unironically detached direct gaze. The guiding spirits are the impassible sadness of hopelessness, the absurdity of modern displacement (the alpaca scene elicited genuine and surprise laughter), the tenderness of shared experience and the haunted house posturing of threat without menace... a briefly glimpsed felony, the breaking of a brick over an unprotesting man's head and a fervent bout of cunnilingus all are presented without impact but not without meaning. More than any other treatise I've seen on the subject, this film portrays Juggalos as profoundly disconnected, half-impotent droogs trading on self-expression to communicate, marooned in a world that is no more or less ludicrous than painting your inner Pagliacci on your face, declaring defeat before they even begin to try.

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 November 2014 04:40 (nine years ago) link

totally people should watch this if they're curious but just fwiw & as counterpoint i found it kind of a mean experiment & a mainly pretty vapid film; it alternates between indulging the most surface-level gaze at another weird american community, & drifting into the filmmaker's kinda installation-art image making, which is fine (i liked the inking scene) but feels just so limited, to me, like more obnoxiously confrontational weird americana porn that doesn't go an inch beyond what we already know or expect. agree w/ a bunch of what you wrote but to me the icp thesis statement just feels so impressed, like it has the uncritical eye of a propaganda video. maybe because it lives within that thesis statement zone it's fine, i don't know.

also alpaca scene just really bummed me out

schlump, i can see where you might've landed there; I don't feel like a half hour piece needs to be much more than be a surface-level exploration, especially when it's told from the perspective of the beholden.
no idea why the alpaca scene would've bummed you out. they looked pretty and well cared for.

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 November 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

thanks, forks; this was something i both didn't like & felt like an asshole for not liking, & i feel bad wading in here. i saw it in a room of people who were really responsive, & there's something kind of precious about finding it objectionable when it so clearly aligns with who it represents & what it set out to do. i think something that maybe got me was the collision of feeling so tonally indulgent - so including like the abandoned warehouse sequences - & then the formal, kinda presentative strategy of hesitating before each shot, so with the scene of two guys in bed under green light, including this ten seconds beat to separate you from what you were seeing. it felt kind of uncaring to me.

but yeah everyone still can watch this on whatever realmedia gameboy color stream mubi is offering, go for it

schlump, Saturday, 15 November 2014 18:04 (nine years ago) link

i think the juggalo gaze as presented here IS indulgent, self-absorbed, strategic and uncaring. i took as a feature what you took as a bug. i'm certainly not co-signing that worldview but it came through as honest and deeply felt (if philosophically flimsy) and understandably seductive. Like if your inheritance is suburban boredom and urban blight and there's no real war to fight except justifying your existence, why not play at conscientious objector and just check out in a cloud of hedonism and insouciance. Obvs that's always bottom line thinking with ICP types (and with most if not all 20th/21st century middle class youth movements) but stripped of language and the terrible terrible music, this felt like it was making a compelling, if hermetic, argument and one that i hadn't heard made by/for juggalos. i thought it was effective in presenting a serious alternate perspective that's otherwise easy to laugh off.
i hope this guy doesn't do a similar piece on gamergate i guess.

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 November 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

that ten second beat you're referring to was effective for me because it tested your presumptions of what two men sitting alone want, given my own prejudices and what I've seen prior. there's a bit of #notalljuggalos but it also felt like a very real display of shared intimacy, "if you prick us do we not bleed"

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 November 2014 18:30 (nine years ago) link

direct self comparisons to browning's freaks and

I’ve been surprised that many people assume everything in the film is real and I’ve taken to half-jokingly paraphrasing Francis Ford Coppola’s line about Apocalypse Now: “My film is not a documentary. My film is not about Juggalos. It is a Juggalo.” My hope is that through the film the myth of the Juggalo deepens and they become more mysterious, more other and more confrontational.
