Wow, Lee Sklar!

yah him. he plays bass on billy cobham's 'spectrum' album too, which is just a funky kick ass record if i ever heard one.

chaki, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

how are you related to him emily? we did a thread recently discussing his relative merits. mark s is turning into him. he didn't like reggae. he used to play in the earliest version of amm. he wanted to be tied up and whipped by lennin and mccartney. thats about it, really.

i am supposedly distantly related to Ivor Novello, although i never found out how exactly

ahem. wrong thread.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ah, but you reminded me it exists.

Jess- if the calculations are correct, it's second cousin twice removed. I always knew we were related to the others, as me ma is a potter and takes great pride in the fact she's related to Michael, I just didn't realise it was the same family. I've been round his brother's house an' all. Ooh.

i guess CC was the black — er, red — sheep of the Cardew family: his deep knowledge of chinese calligraphy and slipmarking on ceramics kinda informs AMM's aesthetic philosophy

in my real-life job at the cr•fts c•uncil i encounter the non-cornelius cardews all the time, weirdly enuff

Can one of you lot rage into the Stephen Duffy/Lilac Time thread. I've found myself trapped in there with a bunch of sychphants.

In return, I can say that I'm related to Stephen Duffy. He's my twin. And I don't like that. You see, I'm not very good at being scathing.

Jowe Head messaged me on FB wondering if we might be related. Don't think we are, though.

Why yes, yes it is.

Have been *mildly obsessed with Cardew in the past, so fascinating to discover the ILX connection.

(*was at an ILB FAP once with fizzles, woof, xyzzz, ledge et al and got excited because there was a guy in the bar who was Cornelius Cardew's double but as no-one else knew what he looked like I had no-one to share my excitement with).

Today is actually Jowe Head's birthday. I hope he has a smashing time.

how do you actually pronounce 'jowe'? not that i am at all likely to ever have cause to speak it outside the confines of my own brain, but even in there i guess it's courteous to say it correctly. for some reason i always germanicize it as "yo-vi" but i guess it could just as easily be plain old "joe"?

irl friend of the geir (NickB), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 09:26 (eight years ago) link

Pretty sure it's "Jow" rhyming with "how", at least that's what it sounded like he said when he was introducing his band when I saw him play.

I assume it's meant to represent a Brummie rendering of Joe?

Jowe Head (the stage name derived from Birmingham slang for "weirdo")

Whether you like his music or not, fair play to the guy for actually writing songs that say something about society and trying to get younger people thinking about current issues. Most music these days is so bland and corporate. Popstars convey nothing in their songs in the modern era except how much money they have or how many chicks they've bedded. Music used to inspire the young to rise up and challenge the establishment. Nowadays it encourages youngers to embrace it. Sad times.

re cardew i have been fairly familiar with his music and life for a while but i don't remember seeing a picture of him......even if you gis its mostly those graphical scores, idk maybe its a rights issue, this could be his iconic picture maybe but only the telegraph website has it

i knew john tilbury had written a biography of cardew, but not that it was over a 1000 pages long.

Ha! Forgot about this thread. The only interesting relative I have is my uncle, who played for Morton and St. Mirren (I'm Related To An Avant-Garde Centre Back), no 1000 word biographies of him to date.

There was a recording studio in Worcester in the 80s run by a man who coincidentally has the same real first and last name as Jowe Head, but he is not Jowe Head, where lots of pioneering grind/crust punk was recorded - Doom, Napalm Death, ENT etc.

Pretty sure I'm not related to him either.

Sad news, my uncle died last week :( Since then I've uncovered his brief career as a recording artist, though I don't think emil.y need worry, it's not exactly comparable to Cornelius Cardew...
