From memory it's called the "ATOC Dub". It's very DFA actually, but the best thing about it is how it junks the irritating chorus and makes a new chorus by looping the "gotta get it on to the show/c'mon it's time to go!" bit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 04:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm bumping this because I want to gratuitously rave about how good it is. Not a weak moment! The last track is total goth-house! Mylo's "Drop The Pressure" swipes *two* Daft Punk tricks, turning a constantly ascending vocoder hook into a proggy keyboard run! Buy buy buy!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 August 2004 08:09 (nineteen years ago) link

drop the pressue is the big hit of the year I think.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Mylo's "saved dance music". The prophecy is fulfilled.

Tim, ATOC = A Touch Of Class. It's on the original release on the ATOC label (I think).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

That name sounds familiar, but in a bad way. Are they the same A Touch Of Class who do sub-par Alcazar stuff?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh no I'm sure you're right. But there was A Touch Of Class who did this really mediocre disco-pop song about New York. I *have* to assume they're a different group.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I missed this thread before. The description makes it sound like the best thing ever! Then again Tim, your descriptions tend to do that - but then again, they often are of best-thing-ever quality. Off to slsk!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:04 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, they're different ATC's. "New York" is the ONLY "sub-par Alcazar" moment by ATC! most of the time, they're top bubblegum-as-fuck eurodance pop (search: "I'm In Heaven When You Kiss Me", "Set Me Free").

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 23:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I love this. It's warm and buzzy like isolee. In fact, the first track sounds alot like "It's About".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Yay!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Nicely bridges the gap between Naked and Kompakt (Kompaked?) - and seems to build on 'Lost On Arrival' - which I sort of dismissed last year as Naked trying too hard to remain relevant (although it didn't really abandon the trademark Naked lushness which the Uno Records disc thankfully continues). I should probably listen to it again.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 22:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha I did the same thing with "Lost on Arrival"!! I think I sold it in times of economic hardship. I may need to get it again. Although I seem to remember it not being as dynamic as this.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 22:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Bloody hell Spencer I wish you could have been at this Melbourne club Honkytonks last night. Their saturday nights are the best house nights in Melbourne but they really outdid themsleves this time. First half of the night was a Prince tribute which was fun but yeah nothing unsurprising. But then when that finished they unleashed this house set that was like the Mei Lwun mix, really discofied but incredibly quirky and constantly surprising, with lots of chunky swinging beats that verged on breakbeats they were so stompingly syncopated (this is good but dangerous for me because I like stomping to beats like an Irish dancer or something) - when they unleashed "Plug It In" it fit right in. Although I guess the Lwun reference points are the really wonky section of "Too Late" and Andy Caldwell's "Pushin (Dub)". I fucking love this sort of house so much at the moment (see also the Get Physical mix)! It's like it's learnt all of the lessons I've wanted it to learn these past few years.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, and I've decided that this is prob. my favourite cd this year (haven't heard Dizzee yet though).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Is there a better moment on a dance mix this year than when that new bassline comes in at the 3.5 minute mark in The Streaks's "The Feeling (Post Rave Dub)"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I wish I could have been there!

this: discofied but incredibly quirky and constantly surprising, with lots of chunky swinging beats that verged on breakbeats they were so stompingly syncopated ...sounds like the best thing ever. Disco-Zinc?

Also, I listened to 'Lost On Arrival' again and it's nowhere near as good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 02:45 (nineteen years ago) link

There must be more music like this on comps somewhere - I listened to it and the Get Physical mix and i was thinking that they're like counterposed versions of eachother, maximal vs minimal. Recommendations anyone?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Got Andy Caldwell's InHouse Perspectives 02 mix which, as I had feared, is nowhere near as good - somewhat tellingly there's alternate versions of "The Feeling", "Too Late for Love" and "Pushin" which are all like polite washed-out vocal mixes compared to their succulent dub-to-the-max glory on the Mei Lwun mix. It actually depresses me listening to the original of "The Feeling", seeing as how incomparably better the dub version is.

I guess the analogy is speed garage where you had some tracks which were basically only slightly faster, tougher versions of the NY hits, and then you had the hypnotic ruff complexity of all the proto-2-step stuff. Although for me something like "Pushin (Andy's Dub Perspective)" is comparable to full-fledged 2-step glory days stuff, such is the fractured swinging brilliance of its groove.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 September 2004 22:29 (nineteen years ago) link

In its favour the Caldwell mix does have Martin Solveig's "Rocking Music", which is far and away the best thing played in gay clubs these days (it's also one of those tunes that sounds like it could go on forever and then actually *does*. It's like LCD Soundsystem's "Yeah" only coming from the other direction! Though if my memory of hearing it elsewhere is correct there must be some dub that Caldwell's not using which allows the computer bleep finale full hysterical reign.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 September 2004 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

three months pass...
I just remembered how good this is!

What with listening to this and the Get Physical mix I'm feeling very "Finney" at the moment!

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I love that you love this Adam.

I think this comp would appeal to anyone who likes vocal 2-step. "Pushin" especially reminds me of early Dubaholics or something.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 8 January 2005 12:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I like this too, I got it courtesy of Michael Gill a while back. It's not bigger than Get Physical, for me, but it is very good. Some of the vocals are fantastic, like they almost make you wonder what on earth happened to good house vocals, the actual standard of them is so good, so much more emotion.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 8 January 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

mei lwun plays suite 181, which is this massive, horrible club for commercial house & hip-hop, sort of bridge & tunnel yuppie vibe. i know that sounds snobby, but, well, so be it. anyway, might be hard to get him for a more underground affair, given what he probably makes there, but who knows. oddly, i never see him booked anywhere but 181, which i find odd.

.adam (nordicskilla), Sunday, 9 January 2005 21:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I have this suspicion that the Uno Records mix is this once-in-a-lifetime great mix from Lwun destined never to be repeated. But I may just be basing that on his sweaty David Morales + mullet look.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 9 January 2005 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, I was just waiting until the indie backlash!!!

"Yeah, I liked this a lot but now I don't find it interesting."

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 9 January 2005 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

It doesn't change this being my favourite cd of 2004.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 9 January 2005 22:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not a big Modest Mouse fan!

One of my favorite things about the CD is that it got me going back to the early Murk singles. "If You Really Love Somebody" is straight up Soulful Electro-House!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 9 January 2005 23:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I still haven't ever seen this CD for sale.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Me either, I tried to get some to sell in our shop.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:50 (nineteen years ago) link

damn i really want to hear this mix. can anybody in the know compare this mei lwun mix to dj garth's revolutions in sound?

"revolutions in sound" is a san francisco trippy psychedelic deep mix but with a heavy underground disco vibe. instead of prog-house reese octave bass you get sampled basslines from groups like ESG, liquid liquid, cymande, etc so there's that chicken lips thing happening. there's not really any overt electrohouse moves but, being as it's a west coast house album, it's got enough micro-production to keep me happy.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

God, I haven't listed to Garth and Jeno in so long...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

i know, me neither until i got hit with the 1-2 punch of doc martin's "sounds you can feel" and "fabric 10". also in the context of things like digweed's fabric mix and the ultra-dubby first 20 minutes of blackstrobe's essential mix west coast house makes perfect sense again!!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I was Doc Martin's de facto roadie (i.e. I carried crates) a couple times when he was in SF in like 1992.

Wicked had some great tracks they would drop, but sometimes it got a bit too gaia or a bit too "funky" (if you know what I mean).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

But when Jeno dropped Bad Boy Orchestra, I thought my head was going to explode. I bought 3 expensive copies on vinyl!

first off let me say im all together floored and flattered at the responce here to "mei-lwun presents UNO". thanks so much. i had a blast mixing that cd and it came out as true to form as any licenced mix cd can. now for some clairification:

mei-lwun is pronouced (May) - (LUN) like the month and the first part of london.

second that track with the 'MURK' sounding voc is actually "the fog" been a long time with chicken lips 'he not in' under it. came out as a white lable and i still know not who did that jem.. (please email or post if anyone knows that answer)

181... yeah thats another story entirely.. yes it is B&T, spring break-ish if you will but i also play @ frisson saturdays and me and andy are atarting up an UNO monthly first thursdays @ the endup in SF..

i'll check back later n see if i forgot anything but have to keep it short as im currently in Jakarta for a show and have limited net acess.

Much Respect to Music Lovas,

Mei-lwun

In some ways me loving the first half of this was a precursor to me loving UK Funky. I sort of feel like it's this side of "funky house" (as well as the obvious - dennis ferrer etc.) that really inspired uk funky producers.
