Recommendations: Celtic

Please be to recommend me some Scottish celtic music. My mum is all about the origins trip now and I'd like to get her some recordings of reasonably legit stuff, e.g., Davy Steele.

I have this great recording on tape of the song Lovely Molly but I have not idea who the singer is. Any ideas? It's a female singer back by, I think, an all-female chorus. I know that's not much to go on for a widely covered song like this. She hits some exquisite notes.

I can add that this would have been recorded no later than the late 80s, but probably earlier than that.

It may actually be called "The Yowe Lamb" and not "Lovely Molly." I can't even find a midi file that comes close to reproducing the version I have on tape.

One of the ten most beautiful songs I've ever heard (I just decided that this week) and apparently it has slipped through the cracks.

anything in this vein as good as the pogues? seems like there should be a lot of whiskey-soaked, punkish troubadours of miserable brilliance from the emerald isle.

i went to ireland for a bit last year -- a fairly remote area in county kerry. one day i was doing some work at the pub and my phone died. i asked the bartender if she had one i could use and she said she did -- at home. she said she'd run home to get it if i watched the pub for her. (i politely declined, i didn't want her to be running around on my behalf.)

the point of the story is that ireland is a great country. i wish i lived there.

I think the drink driving joke might have been about him, it was something like: the road turned but he didn't, it was quite bad form of the road to play with someone 18 times over the limit like that.

I avoid Celtic Woman anything like the plague.

Sad thing is, some of it might be good, its just too much effort..

On an Irish tip, I dug out my old records to make a mix for my brother, especially digging Silly Wizard - "Queen of Argyll" is a total banger.

Also Altan if you ride a more progressive Gabriel-style wave.
