'Rum, Sodomy & The Lash' is about the only 'celtic rock' I can handle.

The followup "IF I Should Fall From Grace with God" comes close to matching it.

How about Celtic Frost? uh, maybe not....

Please be to recommend me some Scottish celtic music. My mum is all about the origins trip now and I'd like to get her some recordings of reasonably legit stuff, e.g., Davy Steele.

I have this great recording on tape of the song Lovely Molly but I have not idea who the singer is. Any ideas? It's a female singer back by, I think, an all-female chorus. I know that's not much to go on for a widely covered song like this. She hits some exquisite notes.

I can add that this would have been recorded no later than the late 80s, but probably earlier than that.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 13:08 (fourteen years ago) link

It may actually be called "The Yowe Lamb" and not "Lovely Molly." I can't even find a midi file that comes close to reproducing the version I have on tape.

One of the ten most beautiful songs I've ever heard (I just decided that this week) and apparently it has slipped through the cracks.

Still trying to find out whose recording of this amazing song I heard.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 26 February 2012 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

DESCRIPTION: Molly agrees to marry Willie if her father consents. Willie asks the father for a "yowe lamb" to start a flock. Her father consents and tells Willie to "choose a yowe lamb." Willie chooses Molly. Her father is upset by the trick, but allows the match

anything in this vein as good as the pogues? seems like there should be a lot of whiskey-soaked, punkish troubadours of miserable brilliance from the emerald isle.

i went to ireland for a bit last year -- a fairly remote area in county kerry. one day i was doing some work at the pub and my phone died. i asked the bartender if she had one i could use and she said she did -- at home. she said she'd run home to get it if i watched the pub for her. (i politely declined, i didn't want her to be running around on my behalf.)

the point of the story is that ireland is a great country. i wish i lived there.

I've still got loads of cousins and uncles in Kerry. I hope one of them told you to fuck right off back to where you came from!

should check out these lads treesh. When I was forced to watch them as a child they were making jokes about drink-driving and some 18th century coleen presented them with a gift of geese eggs in a basket!

Ronnie Drew had some heavy eyelids

Politically homely (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 00:14 (three years ago) link

I think the drink driving joke might have been about him, it was something like: the road turned but he didn't, it was quite bad form of the road to play with someone 18 times over the limit like that.

calzino, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 00:23 (three years ago) link

Only 18, quiet night for Ronnie was it?

Boring blighters bloaters (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 00:25 (three years ago) link

going to start a Celtic punk group but it's youth crew style straight edge hardcore punk and it's all about how drinking pints isn't grand and chugga-chugga breakdowns accompanied by bodhrán drums

I avoid Celtic Woman anything like the plague.

Sad thing is, some of it might be good, its just too much effort..

On an Irish tip, I dug out my old records to make a mix for my brother, especially digging Silly Wizard - "Queen of Argyll" is a total banger.

Also Altan if you ride a more progressive Gabriel-style wave.

Silly Wizard being Scottish but I play both.

Also Breton fest-noz music turned my head upside down, it can rock.
