Their first LP is just plain magnificent filled with inventiveness, sublime tape cut-ups and some lovely tunes as well. Not a dull moment - if you like Tapes then this is a must have. So Far is less interesting for me but it definitely shows their funnier side and is more closely related to the stuff on IV (an album that I like quite a lot but substantially less than the others). The releases after the 70's are patchy but still contain some great things here and there. You Know Faust is an under-rated return to form and the most recent live stuff "Ukko and Rauni" contains some terrific moments. And, lastly, don't forget the BBC+ cd from the recent ReR box set (available by itself) which is as good as the rest of their Wumme material. They performed last week in London for the very last time - I never got to see them live which, no doubt, will be something I'll regret for many years to come.

Definitely recommend the Wumme Years box for anyone with even a casual interest in the band (or kraut in general). My fave is Tapes, though all of the 70s studio albums are great.

i like so far a lot better, it has 'no harm' on it which i'm going to sample some day. and 'i've got my car and my tv' which reminds me of 'to cure a weakling child'. the s/t just sounds like a denser but less interesting second half of tago mago. oh and 'it's a rainy day, sunshine girl', that's a really good mixtape song.

I like them a bit. Their albums can be quite infuriating IMO - the good bits make the bad bits sound terrible, whilst the bad bits make the good bits sound even better. "Sad Skinhead Song" = k-classic, at least. I wonder if anyone's heard Zweistein's "trip out (etc) album. That's as weird as krautrock gets IMO.

So that show was the last time?Dagnabbit...my favourite Faust bits would have to include the scream at the start of The Sad Skinhead, that loopy guitar solo on It's A Bit Of A Pain...it's kind of hard to refer to any one bit on The Faust Tapes without confusing people.

Some former work colleagues went to see Faust at the RFH the other week. They told me a huge fight broke out amongst 20 or so members of the audience some fifteen minutes into the concert.

When I saw Faust, also at the RFH, they were supporting Tony Conrad. Jean-Herve Peron broke all the strings on his bass and carried on playing like a madman (he's apparently back with Faust, which can only be a good thing.) Anyway, search 'Outside The Dream Syndicate' by Conrad and Faust (esp. the TOE reissue w/ the extra track), all of the first four albs (esp. 'Krautrock' on Faust IV - proto- Suicide/Spacemen drone rock at its finest) and the afore-mentioned 'You Know', one of the best 'comeback' albs ever.

I once read that the song Krautrock was intended as a pisstake of Faust's contemporaries...certainly the bass on it is very Holger Czukay...the song just seems like one of the most contrary things you could possibly do after an album of sound collage.

Still maybe the Greatest Band Of All Time, IMHO

it's been a long time since I've had a favorite band, but when I did, it was always this one

my friend mc plays a european festival w/new faust, and after their set, zappi (i believe) comes backstage and says to her, "get me some water". she says, "i don't work here, i'm a musician". he says, "i don't care, get me some water."

"i don't work here, i'm a musician"

10p into the honesty box.

two weeks pass...

i've been listening to it off and on...it's okay. they have a lot of good ideas early on but don't really flesh things out. they seem perfectly happy to leave things static which is something that kind of sucks about the new Faust.

ten years pass...

faust feels kind of underrated to me atm. anyway, new 8-disc set coming out on bureau. trying to get some of the retrospective can shine i guess. i think this is a must-get for me if it isn't too much $.

Hope the unreleased LPs are sold separately. Kinda find it hard to believe there’s worthwhile stuff still lurking but after the Can Lost Tapes idk what to believe anymore

frogbs, Friday, 11 June 2021 02:39 (two years ago) link

Are they gonna keep doing new box sets and bumping up the covered time period by one-year intervals? lol

totally sold on this, assuming that the Punkt material is different than the stuff on "71 Minutes"
