aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 06:53 (twenty years ago) link

well, the thing is, a couple tracks sound ok, but christ I can't listen to a whole album of that 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 over and over again. I think the Ramones actually had a bit more variety. And a better singer.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 24 January 2004 06:56 (twenty years ago) link

I've only heard "Darts of Pleasure", and yes...there is undeniably a Strokesesque feel to it, but they come across as a bit more ambitious and imaginative than Julian and his louche, hirsute pals (and the vocalist enunciates better). Nice chunky bass plonking on that track, as well. And the final bit in German (???) is a nice touch too.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:01 (twenty years ago) link

I will say one thing: if Franz Ferdinand getting to number threee isn't the most obvious buy-in in musical history, then I don't know what is.

And, no, The Music don't count.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 24 January 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

I thought FF were pretty great on TotP last nite.

Like Alex in NYC, I think they are a lot more imaginative than most of The Next Strokes types, in fact, I suspect they are simply milking that particular fashion (the structure of the song seems quite explicit about this kind of opportunism). 'Darts of Pleasure' made me think they might simply be the next stage of nurock heritage strip mining - simply moving the MO on from CBGBs to Postcard and The Fall. But the new record, pretty uniquely in new British guitar pop, promises something witty and mischievous and even sexy.

Didn't Alex used to be in The Karelia? They weren't very good, but had almost Cowardian perversity about them, which hopefully will start to show up in FF even more.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 24 January 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

they're playing a secret gig at the chateau tonight.

and i think the members of FF in scatter have now left scatter. uncomfirmed.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago) link

I said it in another FF thread -- I saw them in Brooklyn the other night and they kicked ass. Their drummer was on fire. They beat the pants off the Rapture for post-punk dance-a-bility. And for the life of me, I heard nothing Strokes-esque about their music. They were goofy, too, which I loved.

As mentioned elsewhere, the lead guy is apparently a Sparks fanatic = I'm inclined to like these characters.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 20:04 (twenty years ago) link

I like them, looking forward to hearing the album. Big Talking Heads influence, which can't be a bad thing.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago) link

The club I was in last night played Take Me Out three times over the course of the evening. It's nice and that, but Christ.

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago) link

If anything, I'd say they owe more to Interpol than the Strokes. They certainly seem to have more to say and more imaginative ways to say it than the Strokes do. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the Strokes, but they don't seem to have much fun in the presentation of their art. By contrast, Franz Ferdinand certainly do.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago) link

Big Talking Heads influence, which can't be a bad thing.

Just about *every* band who ever admits to/talks about a Talking Heads influence is better than the Talking Heads themselves, I've found. So this is quite a recommendation!

morgan geist rmx sounds a bit meh, disappointingly

prima fassy (bob), Saturday, 24 January 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago) link

BOO TO YOU NED. I just bought a used LP of Fear of Music (along with Miss E: So Addictive and a Carmen McRae album where she covers Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed") and I will play it loudly in amiable yet rebellious defiance of your haterism.

Am I the only one who's noticed that the singer sounds exactly like David Gedge?

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 25 January 2004 00:52 (twenty years ago) link

BOO TO YOU NED.

It's true! I only like a few singles by them -- mostly for nostalgia -- and I've never cared enough to listen any further. It's like they have all these reasonably good elements and put them together in a way that annoys.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 January 2004 01:38 (twenty years ago) link

If you think they sound like The Strokes, then you need to get your shit together, sure maybe the first :30 of "Take Me Out" might sound a little bit, but The Strokes have never come up with anything half as tuneful as "Take Me Out." It's so much more a Josef K, Talking Heads, Blondie, Orange Juice, Fall thing.

fuck off,

Hector

Hector Savage, Sunday, 25 January 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

Hector OTM.

I can't believe it's taken this long on this thread for anyone to mention Josef K. They also remind me in many ways of The Yummy Fur (not the aussie one), which is perhaps not surprising considering the groups share two members.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

Hector OTM except Franz Ferdinand are still not all that. I get the impression that what they're trying to do is very good but their execution of it sadly isn't.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago) link

I've only heard one song, but so far I like.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago) link

I thought they sounded like Josef K on the first EP. And a tiny bit like Momus on Van Tango. Not so much on the new one, it's too tight and in tune.

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

I will listen to the album later and provide an important and gripping insight into what I think it sounds a bit like in places.

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:23 (twenty years ago) link

they used to be in the yummy fur ? but the yummy fur were quite good!

my friend's quote at w/e was "franz ferdinand ? more like les ferdinand".

fletcher dexter, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

i hear they're supposed to be much better live than on record. so far i've got the Darts of Pleasure EP and like it a bit, so if the above is true, i'll be quite happy if i get to see them. and they'll be here in March. so. :)

janni (janni), Monday, 26 January 2004 04:32 (twenty years ago) link

From a semi-attentive first listen, the single is the the best thing on the album by quite some distance.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago) link

I randomly saw them at T in the Park last year on the wee bands stage and quite liked them in their angular pop music stompy disco german-ness. The ToTP performance was cool in its complete lack of polish; they did try to do moves together but didn't really pull it off. Best of all is their miniature gay Jim Carey/Kyle MacLachlan guitar player. Quite entertaining in a big headed sorta way.

Does anyone else find it really bizarre that they are in the top 5?

hmmmm, Monday, 26 January 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Franz Ferdinand - if The Strokes could play their instruments a bit better.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago) link

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

So, if supposedly The Strokes sound JUST like VU/Television, and Franz Ferdinand sounds EXACTLY like The Strokes, why did we cut out the middle man and say Franz Ferdinand sounds like VU/Television?

Oh right, because they don't.

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

I can't see the link between FF and the strokes, really (and I like both...maybe I AM the missing link then !?)
FF haven't released an album yet, have they ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago) link

Where the virgins lie

And you my love, won't you take my hand

Where the dew drops cry and the cats meow
I will take you there
